i love my Y! everything about it is amazing. the classes are fun, instructors are friendly and climbing wall is challenging. we have a family membership and get every penny out of it. my younger brothers are on the swim team and practice there five days a week. their coach has lead them to multiple regional competitions, and hopefully the nationals this year! there is a full range of equipment upstairs including climbers, treadmills, ellipticals and the whole shebang when it comes to the Life Fitness machines. lots of racks of free weights and benches. the womens locker room is always clean and full of neightbors and friends. my favorite day is when i do a little free weight action or swim some laps, take a yoga or zumba class, use the hot tub or steam room then hit the showers. i've never been somewhere else that can give me those options. it take planning to know the schedule and like any gym it does get crowded sometimes, but in the end i always leave feeling better than i did going in.

I don't know what the previous posters are referring to. I have been a 'facility member' for four years. I have three young kids, who have learned to swim (well) at the Y in Granby. I have never found the changing rooms dirty. I love the fact that the have family changing rooms. Childcare is free, and a great bonus. The kids swim lessons do fill fast, but I always get my kids into the classes I want - as long as I sign up in the first week of offering (facility members do get an early sign-up option though). The staff are never too busy to answer questions, and always helpful.

I don't have complaints, but I would like to see a couple of things done better: 1) the family changing room gets very busy at times. I wish they had about double the space. Maybe they could offer a few changing rooms without showers and toilets. 2) The childcare room for 7 and older doesn't have a lot to entertain kids of this generation. I realize that they are trying to get away from the video game mentality, but this is a recreation room - let them watch TV and play video games if they want. Or, even better, how about some organized games in the gym. Anyway, this place is great - I only wish it were closer (I drive 30 minutes to get there).

Consistently, staff are unhelpful. Locker rooms dirtier and smellier than normal.
They love to tell you that you have to talk to someone else, who inevitably is on the phone or out for the day.
Swimming lessons are a nightmare. Hard to sign up for and we actually has one "instructor", end the 1/2 hour class 15 minutes early because she had to "go somewhere". Does she know what parents go through to see their kids? Complained to the "pool director" who did nothing.
The Hartford Y staff is tremendous, and facilities are very clean. Why can't Granby have the same thing?

I am cancelling my membership for the Y.
I have been disappointed by the lack of interest in addressing the client's needs.
I have seen people complained about how dirty the facilities are but nothing gets done.
my icing on the cake is when I walked in the womens showers and the drains were backed-up. the locker room smelled like mildew and the rest of the facility was very dirty.
The cleaning crew lacks a lot of enthusiasm when it comes to cleaning the place.

I am an avid and enthusiastic fitness individual and honestly believed that an addition such as the "Y" would be a plus to the community. It had all the right amenities: pool, new equipment, varied classes, etc. Yet, I soon found out that these were apparent on the surface only. The place was dirty, staff were indifferent and when complaints were made, they were taken on a personal level rather than constructively.
Unfortunately, when one deals with an institution such as the "Y", when one offers suggestions and they are not followed up, the member most often becomes apathetic and no longer will speak out - this has a deliterous impact on all of the suggestions and constructive criticism. As a consequence, the facility suffers as it has in this case. A pity: the "Y" is just five years old.
I now belong to a private facility which treats its members with respect and listens to to what is said.

I was so happy when the Y was built in close to my house. I wanted a place to exercise that offered more than just aerobic machines and assisted/free weights. I had considered other gyms in the area, but the Y had the best deal. They have a great front desk, staffed by helpful people who work out the best program for you (whether you are interested in a family membership or just a short term gym trip).
This facility offers a rock-climbing wall, clean pool with long hours - working well for both early and late exercisers. They also have a lot of classes and clinics available at the pool.
For the fitness-goers - they have a progression of rooms. They have a room for those who feel they aren't ready for the heavy duty fitness room, then they have the main room.
I didn't use the former much, so I will just say that I love the equiptment in the latter. The machines are digital so you can enter your information and the machines track your progress. They also have many televisions (both personal and wall-mounted) around the room so you won't be stuck watching something you don't like. They have a nice range of weight equiptment and a good variety of aerobic exercise machines.
Everything is new and I am always seeing people checking to make sure everything is in good condition.
Also, I have never had to fight for a machine. There are always people there, but never so many that I don't have my choice of machines and locations to exercise in.
The staff in this area is also great and they'll explain any of the machines to you.
Overall, if you are looking for just a gym or a well-rounded fitness club - I would highly recommend the Y.

PROS: Huge facility, helpful group, clean, great hours
CONS: Nothing comes to mind
