I find the restaurants in this area to be kind of bland in general. The food was average, not as much spice/kick as I would have expected. Had to spice it up at home.

We first discovered El Coyote when they were located in the Sand Hill Plaza. Though not a premier location, the plaza was well lit, clean and completely safe (after all, this is Newtown, CT not South Central L.A.!).
Right away we we're impressed at the level of professionalism and friendliness of the staff. The drinks were top notch - Their signature drink "The Lime Boat" margarita is especially good.
We were offered several rounds of FREE chips and salsa, and opted for the guacamole off their appetizers list. While the guacamole did seem a little expensive, you get what you pay for. The guacamole was prepared fresh at our table, and custom made to our order (extra spicy!). It was served in an authentic Mexican stone bowl with hot corn tortilla wraps on the side. We have yet to find better guacamole in the CT/ NY/MA area!
For dinner we tried the Churasco steak and Arroz con Pollo (rice and chicken). Both meals were fresh and had a remarkable, truly authentic flavor. We enjoyed black beans and rice, as well as fried plantains as side dishes. After the main course and a wonderful desert of fried ice cream we were served a complementary glass of warm spiced-wine.
We were so impressed with El Coyote we make it a point to eat there at least once a month. They are now located on RT.25 in the Toll House plaza which is about a mile or two south of their old location. Again, the location could be better, but when the food and service is that good we can't complain.
If you're into the run-of-the-mill processed, tex-mex food that is so common around these parts then El Coyote may not be for you. But if you enjoy really fresh and truly authentic Mexican food then El Coyote will not disappoint. As far as the prices go... we found them to be on par with many other restaurants in the area, and are happy to pay the bill as the whole experience is consistently worth every penny!
Highly recommended!!!

I went to El Coyote with a coupon for a 1/2 price dinner...even with that I wasn't thrilled with what I found.
First of all, the prices for typical Mexican food are outrageous! Also, many of the dishes are kind of odd...and again, extremely expensive.
Another thing that annoyed me was that when we sat down, the waiter asked "do you want chips, salsa, and guacamole?" Just like that...like you would normally get for free at a Mexican place. BUT, little did we realize they actually charge you for it (or at least the guacamole...which wasn't that great).
Overall, the food was just average. It was LOADED with onion. It's just way to expensive for what it is.
Lastly, the location is kind of weird. You have to walk through this deserted part of the Sand Hill Plaza strip mall to get to the restaurant. Don't go alone late at night!!!
PROS: uhh...nothing really
CONS: prices, location, food, service...everything!
