On Friday night my mom and I noticed our 14-year-old Bichon was not acting himself. He wouldn't eat and seemed to be in a lot of pain. After calling around to find an open vet, we were finally directed to the VCA Cheshire Animal Hospital. Almost as soon as we walked in, the vet introduced herself to us and my dog, and quickly took him to the back to give him pain medication and tests. We waited for what seemed like forever, until the vet finally called us into a room. She thoroughly explained the x-ray and other tests, and what our options were. When my mom and I decided euthanization would be best for our little guy, I started sobbing, and the vet rushed out of the room to get me a box of tissues. When she returned, we asked if they could bring him into our room to spend some time with him. She said they would bring him just as soon as he warmed up a bit, and that we could have as much time as we wanted; she would be there until 8:30am the next day. My mom then left the room to call my brother with the bad news. The vet took that time to go check on another animal, so one of the women from behind the receptionists' desk brought my puppy into the room, carefully wrapped in a little quilt. She asked if I wanted him on the table or in my arms. I wanted him in my arms, so she gently reminded me to be careful of his hurting tummy and the catheter in his paw, and placed him in my arms. I was left alone with him for awhile, and then my mom came back into the room. She wanted to hold him, so I gave him up and moved my chair in his view so I could talk to him. When my brother finally arrived, he was immediately directed into our room. After a little while, we finally we decided it was time. My brother didn't want to be around when we put him down, so he left the room and told the women at the desk we were ready. The vet came in soon after, and my mom apologized for having rearranged the chairs. The vet assured us it was okay, that it was all about our comfort. My mom asked if it would be possible to hold the dog while he passed, so that he would know he was loved and not alone. The vet had no problem with it, and explained exactly what she would be giving my dog, and what could and would happen. She talked to my dog the entire time, telling him she was sorry she had to give him the shots. When she gave him the final one, she checked to make sure his heart had stopped. When she was sure that he was gone, she was genuinely sympathetic for our loss, and took the body away when we were ready. She said they would cremate him and asked if we wanted the remains. My mom said no, and we proceeded out of the room. As we were leaving, the women behind the desk offered their sincere condolences and gave us 3 little dog angel pins. Everyone there was so sympathetic and respectful of our needing time with our beloved pet. Monday we received a sympathy card in the mail, with a hand-written note at the bottom. Thank you Dr. Carren for your compassion. To those complaining about the cost: No, going to the vet isn't cheap. But tests and medication aren't cheap, and just like for people, it costs money to take care of animals too. Aside from my dog being okay and coming home with us, none of us could've asked for a better experience.

The service was absolutely awful. I am a college student and had to bring my cat in for an emergency last night because I noticed he was bitten. I had to pay a ridiculous fee of $140 just for the doctor to see him, after he was already seen. The doctor told me the obvious, did not tell me what kind of bite it was, and gave my cat something equivalent to advil. This whole visit cost $330. They would not let me leave until I paid the rest that I owed ($20). I maxed out my credit card because of them. Evil. Money Grubbers.

this place sucks the big one for lack of a better term i was there for maybe an hour with my cat whos now their in very rough shape seems they cant do anything for my cat who was fine for the last 7 months besides tell me he probably has rabies? rabies? are you kidding me? or are you just trying to scare the sh*t out of my whole family now thinking we all may have it.. thanks alot although i really don't understand how an indoor cat who hasn't been outside ever except when it was born and has never been bit by anything could possible have rabies... magic rabies maybe.. i got the feeling when their that its all a big scam they don't want to even think about putting your animal down until they have sucked every last penny out of you.. every single person in their was astonished by the cost and i don't even know how the poor people made it out of their that were waiting for 5 hours before i even got there because apparently you have to put money down and the money you have to put down is basically the whole bill.. so you can't even walk out of this place without a 500$ bill or they keep you locked in the basement or something lol they would not allow me to leave unless i paid this down payment that was more than a weeks pay.. these other people had a giant bill coming their way and all i can hear the guy saying is "what do they do if you have no money for a down payment to his wife"... cause they won't bill you.. after one hour i was staring at a 847$ bill and they are telling me theirs not much they can do ... so what am i paying for again? paying for stress and depression i guess... i can't even imagine the amount of verbal disputes these workers get into working at such a shithole. and fix your shity parking lot thats full of ice me and my wife almost busted our asses out their.. can't wait till this ordeals over so i can avoid this place for the rest of eternity....

awful experience. I am so upset i had to visit the emergency vet the other night. My cat was in distress and the red headed receptionist was such a witch. She told me if i didnt leave the exam fee first i coudnt be seen. My husband grabbed the cat from me and we went to new haven. What has come of this place. No compassion and all money hungry. Cheshire vet is the pitts. I hope everyone that needs emergency care uses other facilitys in the area.

I recently visited to get an opinion on my 14 Australian Shepherd who was in very bad shape. The vet gave me the facts and help me come to the painful decision it was time to let Zack go. The vet and the staff were very kind to me and the vet even made me an impression of Zack's paw as a keepsake. The visit was expensive but they needed to stabalize Zack while I decided what to do. Their compassion made a difficult time easier. I wish I could give you the (male) vet's name but I was too upset to remember.

    1. The two positive reviews are clearly fake... They follow a formula that it so easy to read through... "they told me bring her right in" "I was so happy to find them"
    2. The Doc just came back to show me that a "stain test" she did on my cat showed the same thing that she showed me without the stain... That test was 80 bucks.
    3. Is this Valvoline or a Vet? Why do I feel like I am being overcharged for pointless and $2 services??

I agree with Joe's comment. When my dog was in her last hours, the doctor that saw us was very cold-hearted and miserable. The thought of saying goodbye to my old pal was forever tarnished because of Dr. Colburn. I will say that the support staff was very concered with our situation. I think that doctor needs to re-evaluate the decisions she made in life.

I brought my cat into be seen by one of the vets there. She hadnt been eating and wasnt herself. I had the displeasure of being seen by a Dr. Colburn. Under no circumstances should anyone let that woman look at there animals. She was cold hearted and callus. She had a HUGE attitude problem! I asked plenty of questions as any concerned pet owner would and she gave me such an uncomfortable feeling like I was bothering her. I think she needs to be checked out by a Dr... what a female dog.

I hate this place. A few years ago, my beloved GSD Cody was very sick. He had cancer (we did not know this at the time) and began limping severely. We took him to get x-rays, and they could care less. The doctor was heartless. A greedy b word. She said "there is no way to tell you whats wrong if your dog won't sit still to be x-rayed" she was so rude. I recently went with my new dog, and the doctor was convinced that she was there to be a saleswoman, not a vet. Explaining that we "HAVE TO" neuter our dog, bring in a stool sample they were going to charge 75.00 just to analyze, and that we needed to do this and do that. She was literally trying to "upsell" us services. I will never go there again.

Terrible people, i had to bring my 14 year old dog there yesterday and he ended up having to be put down. I called back today to pick up his only chain collar he ever wore and instead of them just washing it to clean it off they threw it away,,,,,, now i have nothing of his. Ive had him since i was 6 and his was my only pet.

They are A+ in my book. Dr Jess Urbonas is a totally awesome simply wonderful at what she does.My older dog was in distress on Valentine's Day, I called and they told me to bring him right in. I was upset when I got there, and everyone, was kind and compassionate. They explained things and took the time to listen to my concerns and they addressed them. Can't ask for more then that. Thanks CAH.

My experience has shown them to be a greedy heartless office and part of a huge corporation. If you can't pay their outrageous fees up front your pet won't be seen. Everything is billed as an emergency which is over $100 right off the top and even after they made me wait for 6 hours to provide a cat I rescued with a rabies vaccine just after he was release from animal control quarantine. I was charged $200 for the honor of waiting all that time. Any emergency case would have died but they billed that way because I had no appt. I would go anywhere but there.

Everyone was really nice, however the prices are very high. We were there for 1 hour and our dog required 6 stitches in her paw. The bill came to $500! I would only go here again for a dire emergency when I can't get to my regular vet. We went in the middle of a blizzard at 10PM, so it worked for us... but that is the price you pay!

This past Friday at 6PM, my beloved cat, Pipster was in terrible distress, & bleeding in her litter box. I called Cheshire Vet Hospital, was told to bring her right in. A wonderful vet explained all my options. He ended up sedating her, doing all needed tests & treatments. She has a bad bladder infection, but is much better today! They were wonderful, & I'm glad I live so close!
