Both food and ambiance are thoroughly original - the owner has colleected odds and ends from all over the western hemisphere to keep the conversation upbeat and off-center. (Dead center is no pace to be while on a date). In the summer, the shade of its outdoor vine-covered patio, seems like you're in an Allayn Stevens painting (that is, somwhere between Napa Valley and Northern Italy). The Cuckoos Nest has been in business since the seventies, mainly because it's been so much fun for all these years, especially for a leisurely lunch during the week.
PROS: Great atmosphere, and innovative cuisine - indoors or out
CONS: Not open for breakfast except brunch on weekends
Yum! This restaurant has the best Mexican Food. The guacamole is the best, and it comes in quite a large serving with fresh hot chips. The ambiance is really cool with lights and unique decor everywhere. They have a seasonal outdoor patio eating area which is also cleverly decorated. The staff is outstanding giving attentive service even when it's busy. The inside is quite rustic with exposed wooden beams, and seating on 2 levels. This is a great place for a quiet intimate seating or quite public in the bar or patio.
Best of all is the food. You will not be disappointed by anything on the menu.
It was rumored, I don't know if it is true or not, that the owner was approached to offer a franchise of this establishment, but he declined so that the quality and his efforts were not lessened by a franchise. The owner definately puts his attention to all details in this one restaurant.
PROS: Fabulous Mexican Fare
CONS: Sometimes there is a bit of a wait, but it is completely worth it.
Cuckoos Nest is an Old Saybrook staple. People come froma ll over CT because they have fantastic food. They serve Mexican and Cajun food, even kids meals. They are very kid friendly and have rooms for large parties or a table for two. In the summer sit out on their terrace and enjoy your tortillas and salsa under the arbor covered in vines. Fantastic!
