Sally's pizza is phenomenal!! Great coal oven-cooked, thin crust, flavorful pizza. Sally's and Pepe's are New Haven institutions, and worth the wait.

we sat quickly, but the one waiter taking orders corrected my order when I gave it to him serveral times, because evidently Sally's has their own language and own way of ordering.

Everyone working there looks like they come from the same in-bred red neck family, they are dirty, rude and unplesant to deal with altogether.

After 45 minutes with no pizza, i asked the waiter if he could check on it for us, and his answwer was, "I don't make the pizza's, I just take the orders!" then he walked away!

the bathroom was so filthy I almost lost my appetite. The pizza was very good, but not as good as Frank Pepe's by any means. and with the ruder than rude lack of service, is any food worth the trouble?? I dont think so, Sally's Stinks!

Pros: good pizza

Cons: everything else possible

In our search for the perfect piece of pizza and after already experiencing Pepe's we wanted to try the rival Sally's. After a 1.5 hour wait in line we were escorted to our booth that was last upgraded in 1950. After another 30 minute wait for a waiter we ordered. No wine and only bud or miller in a bottle to choose from. We then proceeded to wait another 1.5 hours for our pizza. The wait times were so outrageous and the staff so indifferent that the whole experience left me very angry and at a loss for how they continue to get away with it. The pizza is good but on par with Pepe's. I would suggest you SKIP SALLY's all together and head to Pepe's for a wonderful experience.

Don't even get me started about the bathrooms. I wonder when the last time the health inspector visited this establishment. I will NEVER return!!!

Had gone to Pepe's and wanted to give Sally's a try. Waited 2 hours outside in the rain with one 3 parties of 2 and 3 ahead of us while their preferred customers strolled in under the guise of having a reservation. Once seated waited half an hour for our drinks and then more than an hour for our food. The staff know that their pizza is superior and have such an attitude of indifference, it is incredible. It is madening how bad they treat people. I don't care how good their pizza is, I will NEVER be back. I will give my business to Pepe's who knows how to treat a customer.

Pros: None

Cons: Service, filthy location, bad service, long long waits, preferencial treatment to some.

Waited 1 hr in line while people who called the unlisted # walked right in. Then to make matters worse on a night that was 10 degrees, they opened the doors at 5:15 while everyone froze then they kept several tables open while people froze and then did not clean the dirty ones before they sat new guest. Served 2.5 hours latter, burnt, and simply gross. To top it off we were served sour milk for our 14 month old child then when we went to pay they had the nerve to charge us for it (BTW they admitted that it was sour when I blew my top in the filthy kitchen). I would never go again! Pepes Rules, Sally's should be closed by the hdepartment and yes, I am calling them Monday!

"Speaking as a New Haven native I will tell you that this restaurant is a horrible, horrible place. There was a time 30 or 40 years ago when it was a quaint, friendly place. The service is as bad as you imagine, it's expensive and while you are waiting in line "friends" of the place will walk right in. New Haven has many other great pizza places that will leave you completely satisfied! Sally'd is completely irrelevant.

After growing up in Woodbridge and going to Sally's almost every weekend as a young boy, I have traveled back from Texas many times to the Northeast and each time I have made my way to Sally's. I can taste the quality before I ever get there and standing outside at 430 until they are ready to let us in is half the fun. I can't get enough of the thin crust, lovely, pizza that comes from their ovens...Yes the service can be difficult, but that has been the same for over 60 years... and its worth the time spent there.I actually showed up during the week they take off on vacation and had to go down the street to Frank Pepe's and it just wasn't the same....New Haven has it all over everyone else when it comes to pizza that is to die over...

I was in there last night and the waitress at the counter was HORRIBLY NASTY. If she is not the owner, she should be fired. She looked like an old witch, and told me to go to Pepe's when I asked her why people were getting seated before us when my family had been waiting for 2 hours outside. A simple apology to me for the wait was not offered, and instead she said that maybe I should just go to Pepe's.
That is exactly what my family did. It is not worth it-- just go to Pepe's where everyone has the same wait time!

Horrible customer service. We will never ever go there again, and will will tell this story to ALL of our friends.

Pros: Pizza equivalent to Pepe's

Cons: Rude service

.

If you enjoy waiting forever, dreadful service in a dinghy dirty hole in the wall, this is your place. Pies are good but not worth the wait when there are so many other excellent pizza choices in New Haven. Higher ratings must come from out of staters who only experience chain restaurant pizza.

My wife & I had been talking about trying this place for years since we had heard it was better than the other places on Wooster St.
We had heard and read all the stories about bad service, slow lines, etc but yet the pizza was worth it. However, this was an excusion to hell and back again. The wait in the line wasn't bad, it was the wait AFTER we gave the waiter our order. It took a 5 mins to take a drink order, but 15 mins to come back with a menu. Once we gave him an order it took 75 minutes to get a pizza. While people who came in AFTER us got served and we asked the waiter to chckk for us he never went back. Finally after skipped him and went to counter our pizza arrived 15 mins later (the got the order wrong). We commented about time and they THREW pizza on the table and snidely said we were only waiting 15 mins. We decided not to take this anymore and asked for the check and a box to take it to go. When the lady who threw the pizza at us write out the check she refused to give to me because she said WE were rude to her and handed the check to her daughter. Now having been pushed beyond any limit a customer should take from a business I remarked she didn't know what she was talking about, her daughter actually struck me by slapping my money out of my hand.
During this process I heard another patron remark "Oh my god they are going to irritate them!!!" As if it is acceptable to take this type of abuse from from a waiter/waitress/business owner. Thus the title of my post as this experience should remind anyone this of the Seinfield episode revolving around the 'Soup Nazi'.
Lastly, the pizza was greasy while the crust was burnt. Defintely not worth the experience on any level.

This is landmark in New Haven for Pizza. The sauce and the crust are very flavorful.
Most of the time you will have to waite to get in here and the wait can be up to 1/2 hour long. In addition to the waite for the food.
This is not a express pizza joint ,so you have to make alotments for this.

I loved the pizza when I came here. But the wait was horrible, and it was probably the slowest moving line in the world. Once we got inside, it was worth it, though.

I really don't know what people see in Sally's. It has got to be the MOST OVERRATED pizza EVER! I'm originally from Mass and until I moved down to CT I had never even heard of New Haven pizza. (most people in the area think that its a nationally known legend). I went to Sally's to give it a shot...what a mistake! We ordered three pizzas and it took a total of 2 hours to get them...I don't care if this pizza is the best on earth like native new haven residents say it is (it wasn't) it should NEVER take that long! And the service...HORRIBLE! They had ONE waiter...who didn't seem to care if anyone got their pizza and he had such attitude! I agree with the person who said that obviously friends of the owners get preferrential treatment. The pizza was nothing to write home about. Way too overrated!

If you want good pizza with great service and no waiting for 2 hours try Luna in West Hartford.

We stopped in here on a Sunday evening. We got the last available table so expected that the food might take a little while to arrive. Well we waited... and we waited... and we waited... and FINALLY after 1 hour and 45 minutes our pizzas arrived. They were fine, I'd even say they were good but I don't think I'll be going back again. It's very obvious that friends of the owners get preferential treatment in being seated and served - 15 mintues after arriving their food was on their table while others who ordered more than an hour before them were still waiting. When this was pointed out to the owner by another customer the response was "so"... So I will never go back :-) and they might not want to say "so" to too many people or they might start to loose a lot of business. I really don't get the hype about this place.

...Can be found on Worcester Street in New Haven! Sally's or Pepe's, on the same street, you can't go wrong! Cooked to perfection in a coal fired oven, thin crust pizza will spoil you for all others. They open at 5pm, go early or you will wait in line! ( If you need pizza for lunch, go up the street to Pepe's) Phenomenal Pizza, gotta try it to believe it. Whenever Frank Sinatra was in New York, he would send his driver 2 hours to New Haven to get him a pie from Sally's. Put this on your list of things to try before you die.

Sally's is the best pizza, and it is accompanied by great service. I went there with a few friends on a weekday night. You do have to wait a while to get a table (because everyone loves it so much!), but when you eat the pizza, its worth it. We just ordered a large cheese, and the waiter came and told us that there was a hole in the middle of our pizza from when it cooked, so we got that one for free, plus they made us a new one. New Haven is the best anywhere and Sally's knows how to do it right.

Until I tasted their crust and unassuming yet flavorful sauce, I was skeptical about all the hype about Sally's. It is definitely my choice over Pepe's. The wait is long. Dreadfully long. At times, mind-numbingly long. If you know somebody who has the mysterious pass to cut through the lines, by all means, drag them along. My favorite is the rosemary potato pizza. Their plain pie (without the cheese) is out of this world. I was hesitant to try the charred part of the pie (I seldom eat the crust), but it actually added to the experience of the pie. Diet beverage drinkers - try the Foxon Park diet birch beer. : )

The crust, the sauce, the chesse. None better, not in NY, Chicago (I Live in the Chicago area), or anywhere. Pepe's is number two for me. Modern is not as good as Sally's or Pepe's.

Tony's and John's in NY are good. Amore is Brooklyn is good (especially if you like a heartier Pizza). Some swear by Lombardi's but I think it's too filling.

I just turn 50 and left Sally's and felt like I was a kid again. I have been eating pizza on Wooster St my whole life, and the one thing that stays the same is Sally's. With Flo's (the owner) smile and her 2 sons and daughter behind the counter I go back in time. This is like pizza should be thin well done and delicious, I eaten pizza in almost every state and none have ever come close. When you get please order a plain tomato pie just sauce and cheese it is the best!! It is well worth the wait

I would wait 4 hours in line for a Sally's Pizza! Not only does the atmosphere fit the traditional Italian neighborhood, but the pizza is addictive.

The thin, crispy charred crust has just the right amount of oil and flavor. You can taste the fresh ingredients immediately, from the ripe perfect tomatoes to the moist fresh mozzerella. I highly recommend the Fresh Tomato white pizza with Mozzarella when its in season. A close second would be the white clam pizza with crisp bacon.

Sally's is worth the trip...and the wait!!!

Sally's brings me back to the neighborhood Italian restaurant of my youth on Long Island. From the many newspaper clippings, citations and celebrity photos that adorn the walls, to the always consistent and delicious pie. Cooked in one of the last coal-fired brick ovens ever made, Sally's pie is always consistent and delicious with a crispy, slightly charred edge and an incredible fusion of ingredients. My preference is a mozzarella pie, but all the ingredients are fresh, so have at it. DO try a mozzarella pie, just once - you'll see how well it stands on its own! For the unitiated, you will wait on line, often ann hour or more, but it's worth it.
