Family discount oil (part of Bernies) installed a new boiler 3 winters ago and immediately I told them that the radiators weren't all working and that I wasn't going to pay them until they were. However, my husband unwittingly paid them the balance before all radiators were rechecked. FDO over a 3 year period came out 3 times to try and fix the problem and adamantly stated that the boiler is "plenty big enough" and that is just a problem with sediment blocking some of the pipes. Two other reputable companies have both told me that the boiler is undersized and that I need a new one. I dont have the money for another boiler so am hoping that there are some assets available and even though I am not owed either money for oil or services, I am owed a new boiler.

Pre-pay customerr who just lost out on 650 gallons of oil for next December. Service was performed on my furnace approximately 3 weeks ago and I found the service man named Kenny a very rude and unhelpful person. Could this be do to the fact that they already new they were going to close the company and customers would be out the money and oil. After putting in an order and receiving only 50 gallon delivery should I have known this was going to happen, especially after the last time I callled for a delivery in March and was told I would have to pay more for my oil-not a rush delivery-so why$3.00 gallon? My husband called the next day and was quoted a price of $2.79. Customers were already being ripped off but where could I store 650 gallons of oil? Even after they knew they were in financial trouble I received a letter asking me to sign up for a new service plan. Hope some resolution comes of this for any customers in the same situation.

For all that have had to go through this process, I would recommend that you look at the Oil Companys that have been around for a very long time,,,,,,, Bernies was bought out by this new owner not to long ago and had no experiance in this market at all,,,Look for Family run companys,,, I am a Lic. Heating Contractor now and have had the oportunity to work with some great Family ran Oil Company's! You might pay more but they will be there for you ,,Just make sure they have the proper Lic, to operate a service dept. You can also check them out on CT Consumer Protections web site. Good Luck too all of you!!!!

Fuel-oil customers left out in the cold after Bernie's files for bankruptcy
By Lee Howard Day Staff Writer
Hundreds will have to take action to get money back
New London - After nearly a half century in business, Bernie's Fuel Oil Company Inc. has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, leaving hundreds of customers wondering what to do next.
Barbara Trager of North Stonington said she is owed $400 on this year's contract with Bernie's, plus another $1,871 for next year.
"I'm sick," Trager said when informed of the bankruptcy filing. "I don't have it to lose."
Under Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a business is liquidated with no intention of starting up again. The Bernie's bankruptcy filing, signed Friday by company president Daniel J. Groben and available online Monday, shows the firm with between $1 million and $10 million in liabilities but fewer than $50,000 in assets.HJJ

I was looking for Bernie's number and came across this website, and figure it will be good for everybody to share my recent experience.

I have been pre-buying oil from Bernie for a couple years now. The service was OK as long as you don't have to talk to any of the office staff, who are typically very rude and arrogant.

Last week, my tank level dropped to a quarter tank, so I called Bernie, the person I talked to promised to put it down and have the oil deliery soon. No deliervery for one week. Then this past Monday I called again, AGAIN I was told they will deliever the oil this week. Today is Friday and I called them back again. The person was so rude that she accused me of calling at the last min. and expect delievery, compeltely ignore the fact that I have been calling for two weeks. When I was reading the review I noticed other people have similar expereince too. So I follow the last reviewer's act and call the consumer protection number. As it turned out they have received so many complaints for Bernie. I suggest anybody who has such experience call and report Bernie. That is the only way they will learn how to do bussiness properly.

I am on Bernies prebuy plan. I have called them 7 times since 04/13/10 to deliver the balance of my prebought oil. They say they will deliver it that day, but they don't. My tank is getting low. They don't seem to care. The owner, Dan Groben, will not return my calls. I have contacted the Department of Consumer Protection (Tel. 860-713-6160) and Pat Daddona at the Day. Other consumers have reported online that, in the past, Bernies has also refused to deliver the balance of their prebought oil to them by the April 30TH deadline, because the going rate for oil was higher than the prebuy rate was. This appears to be a deliberate criminal practice. I will contact the New London Police Department (Tel. 860-447-1481) and the Attorney General's Office (Tel. 860-808-5400) next.

I have use Bernies for over 8 years now, because they always manage to match the competitor prices. It wasn't an easy ride with them, customer service really stinks they have no business on dealing with people. On the winter of 2007 it was 6 degree outside, our furnace gave out in the middle of the night, we were freezing by morning. Early that morning we call Bernies, oh my god, she was so rude to my husband, we did not received any help until 8:pm. She told us that someone will be there soon. We freeze all day long until they came at night. It has been a bad experience every time we need it oil.Today 29 of Dec 09 it was the last drop in the cup, she was as rude as ever and the highest price I've found. Now, I am officially through with them. I will not use them again even if there price are lower then the others.

I have used Bernies for 2 years and at first they were marvelous. I am not commenting on the service guys -- they are the best. Rather, the office people don't pick up the phone and when they do, they act as if everything is normal. The owner, Dan, is mistrustful of his customers: he now expects me to pay by holding my credit card and I have NEVER been late with a payment. And Dan, I know for a fact, is late in his bills. What gives? Is this company in trouble?

I was looking for Bernie's phone number when I read these reviews. I have used them for the past 5 years or so. They have always been good to me. I have used their service and the techs were quite good. As far as delivery goes... we use to just call as needed then went to automatic a few years ago. One time we did run out, but they sent someone right out ( it was 11:00 at night) and the person was polite and apologized. Most of my experiences there have been good. Their customer service is not perfect but pretty good. Some of the people in the office have been very helpful to me when I have called for various reasons.

This past spring we locked into a cap of 3.59 plan. Since the market was so volitle, they only offered it if you pay your average usage each month. Anytime the price is actualluy below 3.59, you get that back at then end of the year as a credit. Well, we just got our first fill up at 3.39 and it is going down so I expect a large credit at the end of the year since Oil is now in the 80.00 barrel range..

I am hoping they go back to the standard cap they had previous years after this year is up. I found that much easier and I am sure their office did too.

I think this was the only way to promise to keep the prices down so the owner could afford to buy futures back in the summer. This has been a wacky year for all home heating oil companies and Bernies was trying creative ways to keep the price down.

I have used them for two years and I was disappointed with the service. I am currently shopping for another dealer. I found this website and it appears to have all the dealers and some pricing information. www.connecticutheatingoil.com .Good Luck it will be an expensive year.

My husband and I have been doing business with Bernies for the last 4 years. We were told we would be given a statement each year regarding our expenditures. We have had to call each time. We were told we would get automatic delivery. We have to call. We were given a service option the first year and I wanted to get it the second year. The office couldn't even tell me what it included. This year we locked in for $3.69. They never sent us a contract and tried to get out of it. They treated us like irresponsible children and the guy finally said, "You win today, only because I am tired." When I dropped the contract off I was told so many inconsistent business practices that I am fed up with them and will not lock in again with them next year. If the business practice changes so that you have to sign the contract and call to eliminate one then you need to communicate that. This is something Bernies knows nothing about. Oh, and service on boilers--expect to make several calls before you can even get a call back regarding that.

I have been using Bernies Oil the past 2 years. They seemed to always have the lowest price. This year I figured out why. I ordered 150 gallons from them in October and it put my 275 gallon tank a little over 1/2 a tank. That seemed about right to me. Then in November, I ordered 150 gallons again and my tank was well under half. So I called and complained and they told me my guage was probably broken. Since it seemed to be working fine the month before, I decided to try a different company(which by the way was 6 cents cheaper then Bernies) yesterday and only ordered 125 gallons and my guage read over a half of tank. This was 25 gallons less then what I ordered from Bernies. So I figure they rip everyone off between 25 to 50 gallons. No wonder the owner drives a hum v. Anyway when we called to tell them that their drivers may be ripping people off, the said their drivers don't do that and hung up on me. .

Hey Anonymous you Never Titled nor Registered the Motor Vehicle in your name. The Legal owner is the one listed by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and is responsible for their vehicle. You could have had ownership legally transfered to your name with the Department of Motor Vehicle but you chose not to. Then, you continued to use this car in illegal activity and had to go to jail. Leaving the owner of record to clean up your mess. If you were the owner why was there no record of it with the State Motor Vehicles? One can tell you are special and the law must not apply to you. For your information there are laws concerning false statements, liable, and slander which your claims are and ignorance of the law is no excuse. IT IS OBVIOUS YOU DO NOT KNOW THE LAW - THAT IS WHY YOU WERE SENT TO JAIL!

THIS MAN JEFF FROM BERNIES CONNED A MAN INTO GETTING A DUPLICATE TITLE FOR A CAR HE SOLD TO ME, AND SIGNING IT OVER TO BERNIES , WHILE I WAS INCARCERATED. HE TOWED THIS CAR , AND CALLED THE LAST "REGESTERED " OWNER. THE MAN INFORMED BERNIES THAT HE HAD SOLD THE CAR , AND TOLD HIM WHO HE SOLD IT TO . BY THREATENING THE GUY WITH BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR TOWING AND STORAGE , BY LYING TO THE GUY ,EVEN AFTER BEING ASSURED HE DIDNT OWN THE CAR ANY LONGER. JEFF FROM BERNIES TOLD THE GUY TO FORGET THAT HE SIGNED THE TITLE OVER TO ME , TO GO GET A DUPLICATE TITLE , AND SIGN IT OVER TO BERNIES. THEN HE CONNED THE GUY INTO PAYING FOR THE TOW , AFTER HE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE GUY. SO , LIKE , GIVE ME THE CAR , LIE ABOUT IT , FORGET THE FACT YOU DONT OWN IT , SIGN IT OVER TO ME , AND , OH , YOU NEED TO PAY ME FOR TOWING IT TO A PLACE WHERE I CAN KEEP IT. WO3W . A COMPLAINT IS BEING FILED WITH dmv , AND A LAWSUIT TO FOLLOW. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO DONT KNOW THE LAW , BY THREATENING THEM WITH FEES FOR A CAR THEY DONT OWN , AND DOING IT TO A GUT WHO JUST WANTED TO DO THE RIGHT THING IS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A PERSON WHO NOW IS INVOLVED WITH SOMETHING HE SHOULDNT HAVE TO DEAL WITH . BERNIES IS LOW CLASS , AND THEY REALLY OUGHT TO BE EMBARASSED , AND IF THE OWNER OF BERNIES KWEW WHAT THIS GUY JEFF WAS DOING , I BELIEVE HE WOULD PUT A STOP TO IT . I AIM TO MAKE THE OWNER AWARE , AND ANYONE ELSE WHO WILL DEAL WITH THIS JEFF GUY AT BERNIES , ...beware

I AIM TO MAKE THE OWNER AWARE , AND ANYONE ELSE WHO WILL DEAL WITH THIS JEFF GUY AT BERNIES , ...beware

.

I used this company for quite sometime because they claim to have oil prices 1cent lower than any other oil company. That claim is probably valid, but this past winter when I my furnace acted up and/or I needed oil at midnight the man that answered the phone acted like I was having an emergancy situation just to spite him. It was during the second nor'easter of the season and it was cold. He said something like "you and everybody else" when I needed service right away.
They charge an emergancy fee for midnight calls and they have someone on call so I don't know why he would be so rude to someone with children who was in need.
I switched the very next day to another oil company with the same competitive price and much more caring service. I would not recommend this company at all, because they do not seem to understand that consumers have choices , especially in this market.
This company needs to learn that it is cheaper to keep a customer than to get a new one.

PROS: 1 cent per gallon lower than most other oil companies
CONS: Terrible customer service
