I have always like this place. My friends and I have been going there when it was only a bookstore. The hot food is mediocre but the coffee and pastry are great and so is the staff. On a Sunday we sit for hours drinking coffee, eating toast with jellies reading magazines and papers.I for one am glad this place is here.B.T.W. I wasn't aware of the staff issues until recently.Oh well I've always been an airhead!

English to customers is always spoken (with an accent of course) at Atticus. Here is the problem...the employees are not permitted to speak any other language but English to each other except while in the prep area.

This did exclude the Manager. His language is French and he will speak his French language anywhere he wants to.
Please do not support this business until the French Manager is fired!!

I have not been to Atticus, but I do plan to go and ask for assistance - in Spanish!

Contrary to some public sentiment there is no official language in the USA. This country was founded and forged by people from all over the world who speak many different languages. We should celebrate this diversity.

In most other countries of the world, one will hear many languages spoken in the streets and stores, not just the official language. This doesn't bother anyone because many people speak more than one language. Just because many Americans are ignorant of another language, they should not be bothered by people who can speak more than one.

Maybe that is what this is all about - ignorant people are easily threatened.

(The five stars are for a world class staff that speaks more than one language. However, if they can't help out someone only speaks Spanish, than I suppose it would be one star.)

I fully support Atticus Bookstore/Cafe in requiring its employees to speak English at work. It's about time Americans UNITED and spoke a common language. This is assimilation.

New statement from Charlie (the manager of Atticus): "Only Spanish is permitted when your are cleaning, polishing shoes to a white American, or shittting".

I applaud your policy! Speak English in the workplace! It is rude to speak a language that your customers can not understand.

Prohibir hablar en el idioma de Cervantes?

Cul gritan esos malditos!
Pero mal rayo me parta
si, en concluyendo la carta,
no pagan caros sus gritos!

I am so glad that your policy is to speak English while serving customers. It is the height of rudeness to speak to co-worker in a language your customers cannot understand. Who knows if they are talking about or even making fun of the customer. Think about that!

Great Service from the staff!! Even though they were being berated by an awful FRENCH manager. (Jean) While seated there, he was telling his staff that if they speak in any other language (to each other while not serving guest) they will be immediately terminated!!! Come on now, I have eaten there while he is going off speaking French. Food is good, but until it goes back to the way it was... PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANY BOOKS THERE UNTIL THE FRENCH MANAGER IS FIRED!!! DON'T BUY CHABASSO BREAD!!! call chabasso and get Jean R out of Atticus and bring it back to how it was!!!!

Atticus Book Store Cafe is a great book store, with a lot of charm and quirkiness missing from the big chains. It is located on Chapel St. downtown, so it can be a bit tricky to park. But even if you do have to walk a bit, at least there are interesting windows and shops along they way, and you may burn enough calories to earn a scrumptious treat from the bakery while you're there. I am very partial to the scones.

Nice little bookstore in downtown New Haven, you can find books here that are not found in the big "chain" bookstores, especially of local interest. Plus, anywhere you can eat and read is cool with me!

This bookstore has a little bit of everything. It is a small booksotre but you can find a great selection in books, it is very enjoyable to find such a tiny bookstore that is not as overwhelming as the common big bookstores out there. It is great also because they have a small cafe inside but it sells a lot of things besides coffe, they have a great black beans soup that is very popular, and they sell all kind of breads as well. This is definetely a great place to read a book or the newspaper while having something to eat at the same time. Don't miss the bread basket with olive oil is cheap and delicious.

PROS: Charming, small place, nice to be in
CONS: None

Atticus is another locally owned bookstore in New Haven, with an excellent location and a very attractive window display which features books you might not find otherwise. They have the usual array of staff selections, and sell some books at a discount downstairs. They also have a nice selection of greeting cards and other paraphenalia for sale. Many people come in primarily for the food, which is not cheap but quite tasty, and the bread, which they give away at midnight. Open late, and a good place to eat and read. Very close to campus and right in the middle of downtown.

Atticus cafe is a bookstore and cafe. The bookstore carries mostly mainstream popular literature. Atticus is on the Yale University campus, so it also carries books by Yale authors and local-interest books about Yale and Connecticut. The staff will order books that are not in stock and hold them for you. The cafe has great food, although it is often crowded and is a bit expensive. They also have nice takeaway coffee and pastries.

I dream about their berry bread pudding. I prefer it chilled (not nuked) with berry sauce on the side. The black bean soup is filling and flavorful. Atticus panini is FABULOUS a thick slice of Vermont ham. The bread basket is fun with various types of artisan bread from Chiabata and assortment of jam and jelly. Croissant is delish. Coffee may be super good or not as good (but always better than marginal). The place has wireless connection. I'll take Atticus over going to the big bad national coffee shop chain across the street any day!

Pros: dessert selection

Cons: unpredictable quality of coffee
