A brief clarification - I'm not an idiot! And I did go to Aspen Dental and NO they didn't give me the pocket number. However I later went to a qualified dentist and he told me it was between a 4 and a 5.

Just because you have a pocket of more than 3 mm doesn't mean you need full mouth scaling and debridement. But if you go to Aspen Dental that is exactly what they will recommend. It's like going to cardiologist for high blood pressure and the doctor tells you he'll give you a bipass.

I later went to a qualified dentist, Dr. Nickou of Newburyport, MA who did tell me the size of my gum pockets. He also explained to me how it got this way, how to help the gum grow back and how to prevent it from receeding again. He cleaned my teeth, including the area around my gums, told me to brush and floss two times a day and come back in three months. I followed his instructions including proper flossing and when I went back to Dr. Nickou, my gum pockets were back to between a 3 and 4.

Aspen Dental is not only fraudulant in their practices - they're incompetent too. The "payment consultant" refused to provide me an itemized quote for the $1760.00 worth of work they said I needed and then had a dentist who wasn't covered by our insurance perform the exam despite the fact that we had already given them our insurance cards and they had taken the time to call our insurance to find out if and how much of the $1760 estimate was covered by our insurance but couldn't be bothered to have a dentist who was covered by our insurance perform the exam.

F$$CKING SCUMBAGS!

Ratings_icons A brief clarification

Person with dental K.

For starters...For all who seem to think there is nothing wrong with your gums next time you go to the dentist ask for perio charting because if your reading is a 3 or higher that means you have periodontal disease there is no way to fake how deep your pockets are and if you have been to Aspen as stated you should remember hearing those numbers and if you don't it is because you have no dental knowledge and shouldn't be making statements if you really don't know what you are stating
Next....For the patient in Farmington that entry sure made me bellow aloud! First things first, the dentist aksed for an instrument out of the autoclave not microwave last I checked you can not put metal in a microwave. Offices are checked yearly to make sure that they reach all standards by the ADA.

And last but not least....About the x-rays being called unnecessary...It does not matter where you seek dental care there is an issue if your teeth are being checked without radiographic images being taken!!! The images are taken to show any decay, calculus, nerve exposure, and teeth that need to be extracted as well as bone mass and TMJ. There is no way to diagnose a patient without them!! It is best if films are taken annually but are not needed but every 36 months if there is a treatment plan currently in effect.
Dental care is not a cheap thing, it is part of your body and I know I sure wouldn't go into the doctors office expecting not to pay a good amount to take care of an issue among my body. So to all that feel dental care is to expensive then I suggest that a regular 6 month cleaning and exam are done on time every six months and dental work taken care of in a timely manner before your diagnosis becomes more drastic also brushing and flossing three times a day are very important!
I really hope that this clears up a majority of the complaints listed.

as a dental assistant i have seen my fair share of rotten teeth, and i assure you though a "deep cleaning " may not be standard in many offices it is certainly not a scam. ive heard millions of patients say i just went to the dentist and they didnt say any thing about periodontal disease when in fact they are just a few years away from losing their teeth. 30 year olds with basically no bone left saying theyhad no clue. news flash people if you dont brush and floss your teeth they are not going to stay in forever, and stop acting surprised and saying its a scam when you damn well know you dont take care of your teeth. brushing your teeth once a day does not constitute good oral hygiene. so yea maybe you have to wait longer than you would in a private practice but this is a corporate run business with thousands of patients waiting to get the care they need. and to the idiot in farmington its an autoclave not a microwave.

Ratings_icons Aspen Dental is a shady place and so is Shawn!!

I went to Aspen Dental a couple years ago for the cleaning and x-rays I had a coupon for. They would not allow me to get a regular cleaning I wanted and talked me into getting the deep cleaning which cost me over $1000. They put a lot of pressure on me when i told them no I just wanted a regular cleaning. I have never at any dentist previously been told I needed deep cleaning. Aspen Dental is full of crap and just wants to make $$$ and is not at all worried about their patients needs. Shawn who works at the Orange CT location is the one who just went and charged everything onto my care credit account without letting me know. He actually overcharged me $300 and I had to call and complain and get that $$ credited back. Don't go to Aspen, they suck!!!!!

The Sign READS: FREE X RAYS & EXAM for new patents. Better check your bill if you signed up for CARE CREDIT. I was charged $170.00 for the FREE Exam and X-Rays and when I called them on it, I was told it was the the patients responsibility to call the Aspen Dental 800 number and REQUEST a credit on their bill.

I see a tread in all of these "DEEP CLEANINGS", because until today, I was unaware I had periodontal disease!

I went to the Waterbury location, where I went for a simple cleaning. After waiting 25mins over what my appt originally was, I was sent to the back where the hygienist "measured" my teeth. According to this measurements I had periodontal disease which could be EASILY reversed with DEEP ROOT CLEANING! How about that!

The dentist came over, who I saw for maybe 45 seconds total who said I don't have any cavities. He then asked to speak with the hygienist in the back room. After about 2 mins, she had me out of the chair to speak with the "office manager" about what I could do about the cost of this deep cleaning! Again I said, if anything I would just like the cleaning..PLEASE.

I LOVE going to the dentist, but these people made me feel like the scum of the earth. Furthermore, they tried to make it seem like I had some urgent tooth rot situation I was not aware of!

This lady had me sit in her closet of an office, to let me know that I would NEED a prescription for antibiotics, a special rinse, and 2 other appts to complete this cleaning.

When I said that I just wanted a cleaning and wanted to speak with my parents before agreeing to an extra $300+ of procedure, she continued to tell me that she could take off some stuff to make it cheaper, she THEN told me that if I paid $66 today, she could move the rest of the cost to the NEXT appointment.

When I again refused, she pointed to the dentures and said, "If you do not get this done now, THIS will be you!"

I'm 24 and before this, I have NEVER been told that I have any kind of gum disease! I was at another dentist 6 months ago and he had nothing but great things to say!
I only came here because my insurance had this in their list.

When I again said I would like time to think about it, and that I was obviously there for cleaning, the office(SALES) manager proceeded to tell me that she would have to get "permission" from the hygienist if she still wanted to take me or not!...Excuse me??

She then said yes and to wait in the waiting room AGAIN to be seen!

At this point I was so pissed and I walked out.
They use scare tactics and high pressure to get you to pay for things you DO NOT need.

A dental mill scam. I had no idea how many others needed this "deep cleaning". I wished I looked at the reviews beforehand! It seems we all are on the verge of our teeth rotting out!

Ratings_icons Awful, why isn't there an option for NO stars?

I went to Aspen Dental in Hamden, CT several years ago. I have TMJ disorder, so dentist trips are usually slightly painful due to me having to keep my mouth open for long periods of time. X-rays in my mouth area make me particularly anxious. I'm not the easiest person to x-ray but I have NEVER had someone get so openly irritated at me as the folks at Aspen Dental did, to the point where I felt like they were laughing at me, or mad or something. Totally unprofessional.

I also needed to have a cavity fixed, and the doctor, an Indian woman (can't remember her name) told me fixing my cavity was going to be a "bloody mess." Either she had learned English in Britain and was swearing at me, or she literally meant the cavity would bleed when I had it re-filled. I really think she could have kept that comment to herself.

Finally, WHO brings a new patient in for a "consultation" before they can have their cleaning? Talk about trying to charge the insurance company twice.

Total garbage. They need to be put out of business.

I went to Aspen Dental in Hamden, CT (although they all practice this way) and saw Dr. Bang Lee. He told me that I had 5 cavities and needed all my wisdom teeth pulled. They said that my insurance wouldnt cover most of it and they were to put me on a payment plan.

I requested a copy of my x-rays since I used to have cavities a lot, I wanted to see them myself. I took the copy to a trusted local dentist, where I got my cleaning, who told me that I had no cavities at all, that they had lied to me and my wisdom teeth did not need to come out at all.

They are still trying to get me to pay for the procedures i NEVER HAD DONE... had cancelled three times. What they didnt know at the time, is I work for an attorney who does medical malpractice. I suggest to anyone going there, DONT and anyone who has gone and recieved such treatment, SUE THEM. Put such medical practices out of business.

My wife had a crown that came loose. She called aroud to se if she could get someone to re-set the crown so that she wouldn't have a gaping hole in her mouth over the weekend. She got into the Aspen Dental in Grandville, MI for a 3:30 appointment. She got there and they took x-rays and decided that the tooth couldn't be saved. They also said that she needed a needed a deep-cleaning, which included the roots of the teeth (planing). They also said she would need to have the cleaning repeated on 3 or 4-month intervals. They said she needed a bridge covering the tooth that had the crown and the bridge would be anchored to the two adjacent teeth. The whole package for a mere $7,500. We're talking one tooth here! We ended up walking out of the office 1 and a half hours later with my wife's crown still in hand and looking for a dentist who isn't a scam artist. $7,500? I thought I was buying the Mackinaw Bridge!

When I first went to The Aspen location at Webster Square in Worcester MA., it was ok. They seemed professional, courteous and, well, quite frankly good enough to provide me a replacement for my cracked upper denture. After many appointments, consultations and impressions, what was supposed to be the finished product (after they messed up and made the denture without my prior approval) was HORRIBLE. Not ONE change had been made. I was then told we had to start all over again ! I don't think so. My advice? DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS.

service sucks!

alright so called them in 3 weeks before hand, and then they left me a message on thursday asking me to confirm. so i called them back at around 6, and no noe answered. then on Friday, I called them back, and the lady said i have to reschedule.

what the hell... then she started flipping out on me saying that no matter what you do, i can't help you, and you just have to reschedule, and "i can't tell you why dr. lee won't be here monday. "

why do i need this appointment, well they said i had to get my teeth filled, and my dad was like whatever, just get it done, so they did lots of unnecesary drilling, and then filled it.

after the filling of two teeth, they put the stupid crap in between the two teeth so it's like 1 big ass tooth that hurts even when i'm chewing gum, and i can't floss either. havn't been able to eat on the left side for 3 weeks now, and they just cancel my appointment, what the hell is wrong with this place?

*should we sue or lets just post signs infront of their shop*

Oxford, my HMO with which I am very satisfied just added Dental coverage, but the only place available in this area is Aspen.

Fortunately I recognized a creepy outfit before being really stuck with a lousy really schlock company,,

Watch out for Sean, so called office Mgr at the Hamden outlet..He should be a used car salesman, Just BSing to get your money,

Refused to provide free cleaning as promised by Oxford via contract with Aspen Only could get the Aspen special cleaning for $259.!

Don0t waste your time or expose yourself to scams,

That is my opinion

I am disappointed with the Farmington Aspen Dental office by the Sports Authority. I specifically scheduled an appointment for a cleaning. I go there and I wait over an hour only to have the dentist look in mouth and poke around with a dental instrument. I'm told to schedule another appointment for cleaning. Apparently the office does not do cleaning on the first visit. The receptionist failed to mention this when I called and specifically made an appointment for a cleaning.
To top it off they push for unnecessary dental x-rays. I refused and the dentist actually remarked that he could not clean my teeth without them. I do understand the need for annual x-rays but this was just unreal. I've never had dental problems and had x-rays within the last year. It's not like I was going in for oral surgery or something.
The staff is friendly but so what? It doesn't really mean much since they are lacking in experience and communication skills.
Also I was set back by the type of set up. I don't want to see other people getting their teeth extracted and so on and I certainly don't want anyone to see me. No real privacy.
Finally, the worst part: I heard the dentist ask the assistant to bring instruments from the microwave. Since when are instruments sterilized in a microwave?
I am actually glad my teeth were not cleaned. I will not return.

My husband went to Aspen Dental because it was on the provider list. They told him he has periodontal disease and want to do work costing over $5000. He has never been told by any other dentist that he has this problem. I wish I would have read these review before I made this appointment. They really just want money from what I've read and my husband has seen. I am cancelling his second appointment.

I went to Aspen because my husband's insurance had them as participants. When I was seen 45 minutes after my appointment, they claim I needed deep cleaning as they called it. Said I needed to remove 2 wisdom teeth that were under my gums...although they were not bothering me. They wanted to pull out one of my other tooth which they said had a cavity that was so damaged it was hitting the nerve. Which that is why I get pain. Then they said I had some what of a gum disease. I was shocked, but scared. I asked how much would it be to fix everything. $4,000 and that was without the 2 wisdom teeth being extracted, because that was oral surgery.

I went to Aspen Dental thinking they are caring people, however they are NOT. It is true they only want your money+ more money+ even more money. I would rather have my dog do work on my teeth before I let Aspen Dental take care of me. I'm just sorry I never read these reviews before going. I most certainly would of NEVER called and made an appointment with them. I now owe money to the credit people they use and did not get all the work done that I needed. The work I did get done was horrible. They made a front partial for me and when I went to get it put in it was not straight. They{Dr. Lipton} thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. HELLO, can you see very well, my front teeth you made me we so not straight I could not believe he thought they were perfect... Please NEVER NEVER go there.

This review is about the office in Hamden CT, but it is owned by Dr. Lee, the owner of the Orange office as well. So I want to include it here to make sure everyone sees it.
For those thinking about this office...read this first. This company is only interested in the bottom line. They are not interested in long term patient care or anything resembling competent or quality customer service.
I went to Aspen Dental to have several issues addressed. I had one crown that was loose and needing replacing. At my first appointment the dentist recommended several thousands of dollars of work (apparently all my crowns were "old"). I had insurance which would cover some of the cost. I decided to do the recommended work. The office repeatedly misfiled the claims leading to much confusion over my portion of the bills. It seemed every time I had a problem I was advised to "call the central office" who in turn told me "call the local office". I did this runaround several times.
After a summer of costly procedures on my crowns (several of the crowns they ordered did not fit, and I had to see them several times to get the correct fit), I was informed that I had developed periodontal disease and I would need treatments costing $1000 (not covered by insurance). In the whole time I was sitting in the dentist chair during all the previous procedures this was never addressed or mentioned to me. I decided this was pressing enough to address, but costly, so I put off putting in a denture. The denture work had been scheduled, but I cancelled the appointment explaining that I did not have funds for both the periodontal procedure and the denture. I had been given a temporary denture that did not fit well and cut up my gums. When I cancelled the permanent denture procedure the office did not inform me that there was any charge for the temporary denture.
I then got a bill for the entire permanent denture procedure that never happened! I called the office, got the usual "call the central office" runaround, and was in the process of trying to resolve it when I got a collections notice!!!
Throughout all of this, the front desk staff was rude, dismissive and self-important, the billing office confused and incompetent and the dentistry annoyingly average. The office even bumps calls from "existing patients" to a voicemail, while "new patients" always get immediate attention. Their computers seem to frequently be "down" so they cannot answer questions.
This is still not resolved, but as of now I am being told the bill I got was for the temporary denture. If it is accurate my insurance company and I paid more than $700 for a piece of plastic smaller than a retainer. I am now reasonably sure that they have charged my insurance for work they never did.(this denture)

Ratings_icons What A Mistake!!

I had just moved to CT and gotten a new job, I picked aspen dental because they were covered by my insurance. I went in to get an exam and schedule for a cleaning. I have never had a cavity in my life and never had any trouble with my gums. I had gone to a different dentist about 4 months earlier who told me I had no cavities and my teeth were fine. When I went in to aspen they told me I had 7 cavities and needed a periodontal cleaning because my gums were so bad, and that I also needed to have my wisdom teeth removed. Some of this was covered through my insurance but I still ended up paying over $1000 out of pocket. Even though I had gone to the other dentist, I didn't want to mess with my mouth, and I figured that if I had cavities that I should get them filled and that if i needed a "deep periodontal cleaning" that I should just do it. So, I got the 7 cavities filled and the "periodontal cleaning" (she didn't even pick the tarter out of my teeth). I went in to have my wisdom teeth pulled and they don't even sedate you.. he just started shooting my mouth with Novocaine..I left and never went back. I am still receiving bills from Aspen months after the work was done, they said that my insurance didn't cover most of the work they did. This place is HORRIBLE!! I would not recommend anyone going here ever. I am in the process of getting a medical malpractice lawyer and plan on suing them in hopes of protecting other unsuspecting consumers. They are just out to take as much money from you as possible. I will never go back there again.

They refilled every filling I've ever gotten in my entire mouth and I paid thousands out of pocket because I only had a discount dental plan or self pay. I was told all I needed at that point was a cleaning. Then I got insurance. They told me I couldn't get a regular cleaning and needed a periodontal cleaning, ka-ching. The regular cleaning would have cost me nothing. Periodontal would cost me $200. Then, one of the fillings fell out after a year. First they tried to tell me they never did that filling when I know they did - they left me with no teeth unrefilled. Then Dr. Lipton agreed and told me they would refill it - later Shawn (the money guy) told me there would be no charge so I requested an appt specifically with Dr. Lipton to get it refilled few weeks later. When I came back few weeks later to get it refilled I did not get Lipton. A different dentist Lee told me he had to take xrays because I might need a root canal and they refused to just refill the filling!!!!! I got a copy of my dental records and high tailed it out of there. Unfortunately, I feel a lot of the refilled fillings were probably totally unnecessary and now I have to find a dentist quick to fix the filling they messed up. DO NOT GO THERE!!!

I WAS A PATIENT OF ASPEN DENTAL FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. I FOUND THIS OFFICE THROUGH MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE FIRST TIME I WENT IN THERE I WAS TOLD I HAVE 5 CAVITIES, SO THEY DRILLED 5 HOLES IN MY MOUTH. WENT BACK FOR A FOLLOW UP CLEANING 2X AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE ..(WITH THE SAME INSURANCE MIND YOU). CHANGED JOBS AND HAD NEW INSURANCE AND WAS THEN TOLD THAT I HAVE 7 CAVITIES! SO I GOT A LITTLE SKEPTCAL AND GOT A SECOND OPINION BECAUSE I HAD NO SYMPTONS OF ONE CAVITY LET ALONE 7!! WELL COME TO FIND OUT I GOT A SECOND OPTION AND FOUND OUT THAT I DID NOT HAVE ONE CAVITY. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF FINDING OUT HOW TO REPORT THIS. IT IS APPARENT FROM THE OTHER REVIEW THAT ASPEN DENTAL HAS DONE THIS ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION. WHO KNOWS HOW MANY PEOPLE THIS SO CALLED DENTIST OFFICE HAS RIPPED OFF!

I went to Aspen Dental in Orange CT because it was one that I had picked out of my "provider" list from my dental insurance at work. Although it is great location, easy to get to and the hours of operation are convenient I will never go there again. I waited and waited (about 45 minuted after my appt. time). Once I saw the dentist who looked like he was fresh out of "dental" school he explained the work I would need on my teeth. Which was a total of about $5,000 not including what my dental would pay for. Mind you I went in for a check up. The reception sits you down to talk about payment plans!! I was still in shock and refused to sign any payment plans for the "work that needed to be done".
I never went back to that dental group. I decided to go to one that was not on my "provider" list. Which I still use today. I felt like Aspen dental was out to get every $ possible from me and my insurance benefits. I would say they are expensive! I didnt like anything about my visit and they specialize in taking advantage of benefits!

PROS: Location and flexible hours
CONS: unprofessional and very expensive
