I have never had boring food at Marx Cafe. I've never had bad food at Marx Cafe. In fact, I consider it the best food for the money in DC, and when I have occasion to visit Washington, I always head for Marx for one of their dinner specials, which are like the very best home-cooked meals ever. The lamb shanks alone rate the five stars I've given it. I'm also always impressed with the clientele, and love weekends, when the best behaved children in DC are there with their parents.

The Marx Cafe is one of the best kept secrets in DC. I loved going there at any time of day for any reason. Lunch, dinner, drink, it was all good. The Marx even got me laid once. I went there for lunch with my girlfriend on valentine's day and the waiter that would wait on me whenever I went there gave us free champaign. Bottom line is they have the best food, the best drinks and the best staff.

I used to live around Mt Pleasant in 2002/2003 during my stay as an Au Pair. I had such a wonderful time at Marx.
But Im wondering what happened to Sal, the bartender. I think his real name was Eric...Does someone knows him? I was wondering for the last years. Please, I would be very happy someone could help.

Hello,

I am one of the new owners of Marx Cafe. I have been in the neighborhood since 1998. I was running Marx Cafe from November 1999 till April 2000. We were doing a great job. After I left the place, it deteriorated slowly and it was true it was a mess. I went often there to have a beer or so. I liked the place since it has a lot of character and when the opportunity striked I took over the place on March 1, 2006. We did a lot of cleaning. We worked intensively for six months with our pest control company to offer a clean environment. We refinished the bathrooms, we changed the tables, the silverware. The wine list consist of about forty great wines from Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Chili, Argentina, and California. The menu has a diversity of mediteranean tapas. The year has been terrific. On our first birthday we have almost doubled the business. We are not just a bar anymore, we are selling a lot of good food and great wine on very clean glasses. We would like from everyone to give us one more chance. Please, come and visit Marx Cafe and it will be one of your great experience of Mt. Pleasant. We are proud to be on a such a great, beautiful, diversified neighborhood.
Sincerely,
Aleks

Marx Cafe suffers from cool-idea-lackluster-execution syndrome. In progressive Mt Pleasant, a cafe named after Karl Marx with progressive political signs in the windows and a dark European atmosphere within should be fabulous. But I've eaten at Marx three times and it's just not a very good restaurant. Apparently socialism encourages surly waitstaff and food that tastes like it just came out of the freezer. The good news is I've had drinks there half of dozen times and as bar Marx Cafe works very well. They have several beers on tap, including Chimay and Guinness (although they often run out) and the bartenders have always great: helpful but relaxed at the same time. So I'd recommend Marx as a bar, just not as a restaurant.

PROS: good beer, chill bar
CONS: boring food
