The Smithsonian has an abundant amount of work from American artists, both well-known and more anonymous. They have folk art, photography, and scenes of nature along with paintings. I've found artists I appreciate just by browsing their gallery. Their music society often gives concerts, and their violinists sound beautiful, too, which requires tickets. The museum is free of charge, however, and a nice way to see a variety of artwork by American artists.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is home to many wonderful pieces of artwork by American artists. You can easily spend a day studying all of the wonderful works. Warhol, O'Keefe, Pollack... You get the idea.

Like all of the other Smithsonians, it is free to go here. You can always make a donation, if you would like. The eatery (it's not really a restaurant-- more of a cafeteria) is a bit pricey, so stick with restaurants outside the Smithsonian.

PROS: amazing works of art, free admission
CONS: pricey food

the perfect place to spend a sturday afternnon. you can't beat the free admission and the gallery is huge so there is something there bound to please everyone. the modern exhibits are always changing and sometimes you can catch some pretty cool ones.
