I moved to NoVa and I still drive back to this location. I don't know what happened to the reviewer below who got stale chips but I actually love their chips. They are always warm and crispy. I also love their salsa ...however the last couple of times they served it in Styrofoam, so I don't know what's up with that. But, I like the cilantro and onion in the salsa and I am usually pretty full from that by the time I get my entree so I might not care as much that it is pretty decent, good Mexican food. They do have some unusual dishes that are really amazing and I love the margaritas. I like this location better than the one in Dupont.

Alero is around the corner from the Cleveland park metro. We went there hoping to get some decent Mexican. First of all, if you are expecting privacy forget it. The tables are crammed so closely, it feels like you're eating on top of each other. The food was just okay. I got nachos and the chips were stale, the cheese was cold and just gunked up on top of the chips. The guacomale was the best thing about it.
so, if you love stale chips and are satisfied with boring mexican food go here.

I was disappointed to go to Alero and have run of the mill mexican food. It wasn't bad but I enjoy mexican food at other restaurants. The margaritas were good though.

Alero's in Dupont Circle is not your run-of-the-mill Mexican joint. No, they fancy themselves among the upscale eateries in this neighborhood, and they're correct to do so.

The atmosphere is on the posh side with very nice candles and subdued lighting. This is one of those spots that would work just as well as a date spot or a high-powered meeting lunch.

The staff is very professional, yet not cool. They are eager to make sure that everything about your dining experience is top notch.

As for the food, the guacamole, salsa, and pico de gallo are all made fresh on-site and you can certainly tell. It's wonderful! The chips you get with the salsa while perusing the menu are the thin, freshly made sort. The frijoles are not mashed to mush like many places either. There are plenty of flavorful whole beans in there.

I particularly like their Chicken Enchiladas for $9.95. A bit higher than most places, but worth it. These come with those wonderful beans, heaps of delicious Mexican rice, lettuce, guac, pico.... and although they do bring sour cream, they are wise enough to put it on the side. Bonus points for that. I have to warn you that this is a massive amount of food which I have never been able to finish. It does reheat quite well though the next day.

They also do some awesome sizzling chicken fajitas for$11.95. Again, this is just a whole lot of food. A whole lot of way above average food. I'm not sure exactly what they do different, but rest assured there absolutely is a noticable step up from the usual fajitas.

Great food, great staff, great atmosphere, reasonable prices for what you get..... 4 stars here. They lose one star from me only because they have banned smoking inside. So if you're a non-smoker, you may well just give them 5 stars.

PROS: Everything
CONS: No smoking inside
