The selection of books is so-so, the selection of audiovisual material is horrible. The special collections (Washingtoniana and African-American Studies) are great. The programming is top-notch. The staff...well, some of them have attitude. Others are really friendly and helpful, so you never quite know what you're going to get. Well, you do if you've been around for awhile, then you know who to approach if you have a question and who's likely to bite your head off. The clientele are...well, a lot of homeless people, for the most part. All in all, it's not a great library for hanging out in (and you should try to use the bathrooms on the 3rd floor; avoid the A-level), and the building's a wreck, but the collection does have some things you won't find anywhere else.

PROS: Free parking (very rare in this neighborhood!) if you can find it
CONS: Scary bathrooms, surly people, smelly elevators
