Are you looking for some first print or out of print books? This is the first place to go! They have some VERY unusual books from small printing companies and hard to find out of print books. Also have a reasonable collection of records (vinyl) that are vintage and hard to find.

I've been popping in and out of Second Story books for over six years now. Interestingly enough, what drew me in there in the first place was not the books, but their other media. They also have a sizeable used video, dvd and record collection ini addition to their used books. The pricing structure for each is very reasonable. While I don't think the staff is quite as familiar with all the books as Idle Time Books up 18th Street, they're more than eager to help you if you just ask.

Second Story Books can be a little overwhelming when you walk in--there are lots and LOTS of books crammed into a tiny space, with narrow aisles. It rewards the browser, though, because you'll always find something unique you never knew you wanted. On weekends they put tables out on the street for sidewalk shopping at discount prices, which is an easier way to see what they have to offer. Located right next to the Dupont Circle metro stop.

Dupont Circle is home to many used book stores, but in my opinion this is one of the better ones. They have a good selection of books on many topics, including philosophy and history. The prices are higher than they would be at some other places, but they also have special sales on the weekends right outside of the store where you can purchase any book on the table for a small sum (usually $4) at which you can find some great buys that they just don't have room for inside.

Second Story Books has a handful of locations thoughtout DC and Maryland. They have the hands down best selection of used books and they feature acquiring rare books. All of their stores are linked, so they can easily locate merchandise in other stores. Pricing policy is that you pay half of whatever the cover price of the book was, so you can get some great books for less than a dollar based on print year!

PROS: CHEAP! Big selection.
CONS: none

Battling the trendy new bookstores that dot Dupont Circle, Second Story succeeds in giving customers a cozier and more intimate feel. Surrounded by shelves of books that have all lived former lives, one can get lost for hours simply running fingers over their papery spines.

Worth checking out, at the least.

Just off Dupont Circle is a great little place called Second Story Books. It's a bit of an old building and the place is just wall-to-wall (and sometimes floor) used books. It's a little musty in some areas but that just gives the place character, if you ask me.

They have everything from recent best sellers to very old first editions. The expensive stuff is mainly in locked Law book cases near the register, for good reason.

The rest of the store is kinda-sorta broken down into genres such as travel, fiction, biography, gay lifestyles, and several academic areas like Sociology. There is a vast selection here, so plan to spend some time just browsing for old gems which will jump out at you.

The staff is extra friendly and helpful here if you happen to hbe in search of something specific. The prices on the everyday stuff are really reasonable, with many of the paperbacks going for a dollar.

Book condition varies from book to book. Some are pristine, some are pretty shabby, all are priced accordingly. Second Story is not here to rip you off at all.

If you don't find what you want, do ask. What you see here is only the tip of the iceberg. They have a warehouse full of books awaiting their turn at the store shelves.

PROS: Wonderfully quaint
CONS: Too tempting to my wallet...

I love the street sales they do in Dupont. It's awesome to see books and people who love them. I've never been inside, but I hope to get in soon. They seem to have a good following of buyers.

This is a second hand book store that has a lot of current titles at very resaonable prices. They also buy books and you can credit that to the purchase of new books. Excellent biography section
