Lil John here. Thanks to everyone for your wonderful comments and reviews!!! Means a lot to me!
I wanted to let everyone know that after 15 years, Studio 2000 is closing its doors on Jan. 27 due to a huge hike in the building's rent. I'm moving on to a salon very close by. I hope to continue to provide great hair cuts and color, please come in a see me!
Here's the info:
1811 B 18th street NW (just a few doors down from Lauriol Plaza, 18th between S and T street)
Washington DC 20009
And here's my cell: 202-607-8247
I was refered to the salon by a friend who has been going there for years. In the recent past before I went to Studio 2000, I had gone to 2 others salons and had my hair destroyed by wannabes that have no knowledge of hair color. Without my having to give much direction, John cut my hair, removing the damaged ends and was somehow able to fix my overprocessed color to a beautiful brown that I loved. I got compliments on my hair for weeks after leaving the salon. Everyone in the shop was wonderful, lots of conversation and an extremely comfortable atmosphere.
I met John in a bar - he gave me his card, after my first haircut - it was love at first sight. He's fun, interesting and an absolute DYNAMO with color and cuts. Yes, he occasionally runs late - think of it as a purposeful slow down to your life - or get smart and call ahead to see how he's running. As far as Walter etc - I find them a colorful cast of characters who only enhance my experience - whether they are having a bad day or not (breath people, breath). A great hair stylist, in my opinion, is worth a little hassle. John's a keeper.
I've been going to Walter for more than a year now, as have a good portion of my friends. He's a versatile stylist and we all enjoy the final hair style. We all receive compliments on our hair.
I'm not an apologist; it is possible that Walter may get rude when rushed (what small business owner won't?), but I've never seen it.
Getting your hair styled in Washington, regardless of where you go, is a bit like theatre. Allow time for getting in your seat; be tolerant of the dress rehearsal and the missed cues; sit back and enjoy the show.
PROS: Relaxed atomsphere, reasonable price
CONS: In a hurry? Studio 2000 is not for you.
I started going to Studio 2000 over a year ago and Patricia was recommended to me. I couldn't be happier - she completely transfomed a tired old hairstyle into a trendy, hip look that I get complimented on all the time (FYI it's a short cut with lots of highlights, I go into the shop about every 4 weeks). Patricia and I have a great rapport and I also enjoy the atmosphere of the shop - lots of lively banter among the customers and stylists, great music, and casual setting. Patricia is flexible with me if I run a few minutes late (of course I always call to be considerate if this happens and try not to make this a habit), and she's never missed an appt with me. Regarding the other reviewer's comments about the "feud" between Patricia and Blanca, I don't know what he's talking about or why that would even matter. Bottom line is: you get a great cut at Studio 2000 and you also have a freakin fun time to boot.
PROS: Stylists who know their stuff
CONS: So you might have to wait a day or two to get in, life's not perfect
I have been going to Studio 2000 for two years. Before, I had always felt nervous getting my hair cut, having ended up with some bad experiences -- stylists who did not listen to me when I told them what I wanted or were otherwise distracted while they were working. I've never had that happen to me at Studio 2000. John has always listened to me. He?s made suggestions, but never done anything I?ve not approved. I've felt more confident about my hair, and more willing to experiment with it, because I trust him. Neither Walter, nor anyone else who works there, has ever been anything other than friendly to me. I love the atmosphere: it's not stuck-up or posh, people (stylists, management, and clients) will jump in and talk to you about anything, hair-related or not. Not everyone is comfortable with that level of familiarity, but it's always made me feel included and very welcomed. As for the time issue, I certainly sympathize with those who are upset when John is running late for whatever reason. However, I would much prefer John (ie, a real person who cares about me) cut my hair than an automaton who is only trying to get me out of the chair in the allotted time. Personally, it is absolutely worth making sure that I schedule some wiggle room around my appointment time in case there's a late start. The studio on one occasion not only called me to tell me John was sick on a day I had an appointment, but that he would be coming in on the following Saturday (not his usual time) so I could reschedule if I wanted to. If you are looking for a salon where everyone is real, this is a place for you. I have recommended John to quite a few people, many of whom have become regulars there, and recommended their friends to him as well. I don't think that would happen if Studio 2000 was as wretched a place as these other reviews suggest.
PROS: John's talented ways with the scissors; low prices; the friendly atmosphere
CONS: not open on Mondays
I had to find a new Salon recently (chose Bang Salon on U St. and was very happy). I had been going to Patricia at Studio 2000 for the past year or so. Unfortunately, Patricia is now doing real estate and only cuts hair on the weekend, which isn't very convenient for me. Also, 3 of the last 4 times I neeeded a haircut, there was something that went awry with my appointment. Twice this woman, Blanca (who hates Patricia) would say she was making an appointment for me, but she wouldn't write it down. I reported this to the owner and he blew it off as something that "just happens." The last time something went wrong, I called to say I was going to be 10 minutes late and they said, oh, don't worry about it, she didn't come in today. They couldn't tell me why they didn't call me to tell me that.
As many of the reviews have stated, Walter, the owner, is a jerk. He yelled at my fiancee once because she asked him to turn down the blaringly loud latin music. He said, "Who the hell are you? This is my salon and I do what I want here!" Also, he cut my hair once and instead of doing what we discussed, he decided he knew better and gave the haircut he wanted. I told him several times not to go shorter and he just kept taking it off until I practically yelled at him to stop.
John is the probably the only stylist I could recommend at this place, but even he is notorious for not showing up. Of course, you don't find this out until you show up for your appointment. I know this because a co-worker goes to John and that's her only complaint.
PROS: John is good, if you can get and appt and if he actually shows up
CONS: Walter, the owner, is a jerk
I was recommended to John who was excellent but the poor guy works for the rudest and most unpleasant man I have ever experienced!!!! He answered the phone when I called to make my appointment with John. When I asked who I was speaking with, he said "what my name is has no importance to making your appointment" and then slammed down the phone. I called my friend who recommended John to me and asked her what the owner's name was, she told me his name was Walter. I called back and the same man answered the phone. I asked him if I could speak to Walter and lo and behold, he said...."This is Walter speaking". YUK
CONS: WALTER. I heard he is terrible with hair, too!
I went to John and he was great but I will never go back due to the rude and obnoxious attitude I experienced not only on the phone but in person when I showed up for my appointment. I can't believe the owner and manager act this way when we are paying his bills. What an ungrateful group of stylists. I can't believe this attitude comes from such a man who I hear is terrible with hair and can't cut to save his life!!!!!!!!!!
CONS: The owner.
John is a really pleasant person and talented with hair. Unfortunately, I felt rushed and like we didn't have enough time to adjust the hairstyle to what I wanted. When I came in on time, I had to wait a bit because he was finishing someone else's haircut. As he was cutting my hair, someone else had to wait 10-15 minutes for him to finish my session. I ended up walking out with something I didn't like much.
The owner (I assume such a rude person could only be the owner and not an employee) is also very brusque and rude. He barked at me when I called to confirm my reservation and sounded extremely rushed, hanging up on me all of a sudden. He didn't speak clearly when I asked for change from a $20 to leave a tip, and when I asked him again, he snapped at me to go next door to Potbelly's for change. I expected to be treated better at a place that charges $40 for a haircut, more than Bubbles Salon and Bang on U St.
PROS: John the stylist
CONS: Rude, unprofessional manager. Rushed atmosphere.
