I tried thier cheesecake and it was excellent.
The waitstaff isn't that satisfactory, and our waitress seemed distracted. It was super crowded but that was to be expected on a Saturday night.
It was a little overpriced, but the bookstore was impressive.
I would suggest going at a less crowded time.

When I lived in D.C., this is where I would get my books. Their are books in every nook and corner of this small shop but everyone is super friendly and non-pushy. This store is so popular, it's packed on weekend evenings.

Another perk is the cafe and I do recommend their Sunday brunch if it is a bit of a wait. But the nice thing is that you can browse lots of interesting books while you wait!

I haven't found a store quite like it since moving back west.

PROS: Adjacent to Dupont Circle Metro

This bookstore is cluttered and crowded, but they have the most eclectic collection of new books that I have found in the city. They feature a lot of local authors and hard to find arthouse books, as well as the fiction and literature favorites. Books are spread out on tables in the middle of the store and also on shelves lining the walls, and even overflow in the windowsills. A quick glance through and you will find something intriguing that you never thought of. It's a good place to shop for a gift book for the friend who has everything. There's also a yummy restaurant and a bar. They are open until very, very late.

This bookstore has a great selection of books, ranging from academic to popular literature. The staff is really knowledgable and will help you find and order books that are not in stock. As an added bonus there is a really nice restaurant attached to the bookstore, which has great coffee and snacks, as well as dinner. Kramer's is open until late, for any late night book or food cravings.

Kramerbooks is one of my favorite places to go on Friday nights when I don't have any plans. It is always full of interesting people and they are open until the wee hours of the morning (often 3am) and hire musicians to play live music. The store is fairly small but they still manage to keep a good selection in stock, with their most extensive collection being left-leaning political and social commentary. The prices are usually not discounted as they might be at some other stores but the atmosphere makes up for that.

I love Kramer Books...okay I love the After words Cafe. This place is what a good bookstore should be. It is jam filled with books and people sitting are standing around actually reading. Can you believe it? The staff is friendly and no one bugs you to move along. Don't stand too near to the bar area though. People do still smoke there.

PROS: Great location across from Dupont Circle Metro Station

Kramer Books-- which also houses a bar, coffee shop, and full-service restaurants-- is a typically atypical Dupont Circle browsing spot. Lots of quirky and liberal books, as well as well-developed fiction, poetry, philosophy, sociology, and politics sections. Sometimes it gets crowded, but the books are all pretty accessible, and its easy to spend hours just looking.

PROS:
CONS: Somewhat pricey.

The cafe has good menu items and the ambiane is really nice. I love their crabcakes, salad and cornbread. The lemonade is out of this world. The dessert items are fresh and the service is excellent.

I adore Kramer Books. This is a small independant bookstore with books just crammed everywhere. You have to fight your way through to the section you wish to look at, and then try to keep out of everyone's way. This is a good thing, trust me. The clientelle here is fantasticly friendly so all that closeness is not the bad thing you would normally count it as. When another patron notices your preferences as he squeezes by, he just may offer some great suggestion on reading material.

The staff is just unparalled in the friendliness and knowledge of their stock departments. They are always smiling and eager to help you track down that latest must-have book.

In the back you will find a little cafe called the "Afterwords Cafe." How cute is that? There is one computer there too for costumer use, and it's free. Do expect to wait awhile though as there is frequently a line for that free 15 minute Internet access.

For as small as they are, they have a great selection, the staff rules, and the food is good at the cafe. Do stop in here.

PROS: Wonderful atmosphere
CONS: small-ish
