There are so many other good diners in the area that no visitor or local should ever eat here.
I have been going here for almost 5 years now and it has gone considerably downhill since then. On my latest visit I encountered horrible, unattentive service on an uncrowded Sunday morning. Most of my group's food was served cold and two of our sandwiches came on moldy bread. After alerting the server, he said he would speak to the cook but there was nothing else he could do. The cashier (and assumed manager) was cold and didn't seem to care his establishment was serving moldy food. He comped only our two sandwiches and then overcharged for other items and provided no receipts.
If you want good diner food and service in DC try OpenCity (Woodley Park), The Diner (Adams Morgan) or Tastee Diner (Bethesda).

This is not, in my terms, a real quality diner. The food was outrageously expensive and the quality was horrible. The decor needs upkeep and there was essentially no parking. There are many diners in the area- don't go to this one!

With satisfactory food, a great atmosphere, fun games, and great oldies tunes the American City diner has become a funky fixture of DC life. Although the food is mediocre people flock to this diner for the great mood and fun people.
