I stopped by Conn Ave Wine and Liquor tonight, and while there, struck up a conversation with a girl buying a hard-to-get wine they do not usually carry. While talking to her, I suggested another liquor store that carries the wine reliably. Apparently, the staff overheard, and as I walked out, a large Russian guy threatened that "if you pull that again, it will be your last time shopping here." Needless to say, he will never have the opportunity to carry out that promise; but my suggestion is, what with a staff given to threats and a $10 credit card minimum, you join me and check out any of the four other liquor stores (State Liquor on P, Universal or Martins on Florida, Cairo on 17th) in the Dupont Circle area who do not have a CC minimum and who have never, in my 4 years here, gone nuts on me.

My experience with the personnel in this liquor store, including the owner, was horrific. The owner is oblivious to obvious rude and unprofessional behavior of their sales clerks. On a recent visit during a wine tasting at this store (it is on my way home from work), I was addressed/insulted in the most sexist and racist way by one of the sales clerks in front of a wine representative and other customers. I asked this person to please contain himself. He then yelled maybe 10 minutes later across the room and accused me of "selling wine at 'his' store". That is most ridiculous! I had an interesting conversation with another customer about wines that we both like. I pointed - unfortunately - a wine out that I just had purchased the week before and found delicious. That is it. The wine sales person threatened to throw me out of the store. I turned to the owner, sitting with his wife behind the counter. He was grinning at me and for a moment I thought he was not comprehending what I said. His wife did, though. I was explaining the situation to her and said that this insult will have consequences and that I have no more business to do here. My husband stopped by the same store a couple of hours later to address this situation again and insisted on an apology. Again, the owner did not feel responsible. The sales person suggested that we should go elsewhere, and - lo and behold! - this is exactly what we will do!
