I brought My dog into The Bath House on Thursday September 3, 2009 to have his hair trimmed and nails trimmed. Upon picking up my dog I noticed he was very red. After taking him home I noticed that he had marks on the underside of his stomach that had not been there when I had dropped him off. There were also lines in his fur from being buzzed with the razor that were not even. His face and head had barely been trimmed. I made an appointment the next morning with Pet Smart grooming, which is where he had originally been going. Upon bringing him into Pet Smart the staff of groomers looked him over and told me that the red on his skin were burns. I looked closely and agreed. He had, since being picked up from The Bath House, been acting differently than he normally would. I am thinking it is because he was in pain. After talking with several groomers at Pet Smart and other facilities, I was told that when using clippers to groom a dog it can become very hot and burn the skin. It is the practice of all of the groomers I spoke with to change clippers once a pair becomes hot so as to not burn the dogs skin. I am outraged that someone could do this to my dog and I wonder how often this actually happens in this place. I had to spray my dogs body with First Aid spray every few hours to help ease the burning for weeks. This should NEVER have happened.

The owner Bayard "Byo" Spence, a person who grew up around the animal hospital, his father, Dr. William "Doc" Spence was one of the first vets in the area, who founded the Dover Animal Hospital. Byo his son, now operates the Bath House- a boarding and grooming kennel since the early 80's. Byo graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelors in Animal Science. The Bath House is in the building that was originally their home back in the 50's and 60's, when Doc built the Dover Animal Hospital. The boarding area is downstairs and is open to any boarder's inspection at any time. Some boarders leave animals for a period of time due to a move and come visit or take the animals to the park. The upstairs house the office and supply storage, also where the company cat "Kit", a rescue, hangs out. Byo boards and grooms all dogs and cats, even a rabbit, hamster or fish from time to time. Call for appointments ahead.

This boarding house is satisfactory. We've taken our pets their to be boarded pretty often. The only negative thing I would say about this place is that everything seems to be not in the open as far as where your pet would be at while in their care. They have an upstairs area and it seems to be off limits to customers so I'm not crazy about that aspect. Everything else as far a customer service and price seems to be okay though. I would recommend asking to see their facilities and if they decline, go somewhere else.
