We arrived early on a Sunday so we would not have a wait, which once opened we were seated immediately. That was the only good part. I waiter was less than enthusiastic and just truly cared about turning our table over. I have had better seafood elsewhere and our drinks (mojitos) which should be such an easy staple to make for South Beach were less than good. VERY disappointed! Would not go back. Your money is better spent for a cheaper and better dinner at the Ritz Carlton, not to mention better view and trip over themselves service!

We walked in and we knew we had made a mistake, immediately. The ""old club"" restaurant look and feel of oh so many steakhouses that serve bad food. We should have left but it was late and we were hungry so we stayed and hoped despite our instinct telling us otherwise.
The cocktails were good and this is the only high point of the evening. The fried calamari were clearly out of a bag, we each tasted one piece and gave up (they kindly removed it from our check). And what to say about the conch fritters? I tasted one and I could not go on (I can only tell you that I had better luck with the fritters from a street vendor outside Grand Cayman Airport). My husband had 3 as he was famished by now, but even he had to give up eventually. I wish I could say they tasted bad, but that would imply some taste.

For main course we got the stone crab (why the claws arrived icy cold when we only ordered them 10 mins prior, is another of those mysteries. Unless there is an assumption that everyone love them very cold. ) and the yellow fin tuna steak.

Where these dishes bad? No , just banal beyond belief. When I saw that they had added dry wasabi peas to the jicama salad, I realized what is so wrong with this place: the chef probably use Campbell's Kitchen web site for his recipes. If you like good food avoid this place.

This is the best place for Stone Crabs without a doubt. The super large ones are too expensive but sometimes they have a special on mediums. They have great sauces too.

My wife and I go to Joes at least a dozens times when it's open. The stone crabs are the best in Miami. The seafood bisque is delicious, as are the grilled tomatoes, and world famous hash browns. And you better save room for the world's best key lime pie!

The food was good and the place was very busy. The oddest thing was that the waitress (don't remember the name) kept rearranging the place of my glasses and silverware. It would not have bothered me so much if she kept her hands off the rim of my glass, but she did not. It was just weird. Other than that it was good.

We went to Joe's on 1/18 because it is supposed to be amazing but what they don't tell you is there are no reservations or calling ahead and typical waiting times are 2 hours...unless you are willing to pay. I watched over a hundred people get seated before me who had arrived after because they are willing to slip the head waiter who is in charge of seating 20-40 bucks. This would be fine if a few people did it but it seemed it was the accepted method of seating with far more people being seated in the greaser line than who were not willing to pay extra for a table at a place where a meal for two costs 125-150 dollars. And this is all under the table cash something Joe's might want to watch out for if the IRS ever comes to visit. The atmosphere...you feel like you are in a cafeteria in highschool, large rooms, loud with silverware clanking everywhere. I was disgusted and I can't believe this restaurant is touted as Miami's finest, will never go back.

Joe's history is interesting! And that in itself yields to an atmosphere that sparks my imagination of what it must have been like in the days of old!\r
I like to get there early before they open and walk through the line of waitstaff. That early presentation is fun! The staff has always been pleasant and accomodating. \r
The stone crabs are great - but how can you ruin a stonecrab? But - the big BUT.... how do they ruin bread? For a restaurant of this reputation I would think that they can serve WARM (or at least room temp) bread! \r
Best deal on the menu??? A heaping order of sweet fried oysters for $6.95!! Soups are good too!

While I did enjoy the food which is excellent and the service was very good, I really could have done without the big fat rat under our table. The waitress was totally unfazed by this and asked if we'd be staying for dessert. We left and had coffee elsewhere.

I can't say anything bad about the food...it's all great. I'm not sure it makes sense to get stone crabs here though. The only thing that makes them different from any other place that serves them is the dipping sauce which is good but I'm not sure it's worth the price difference. The rest of the food is great. Pay particular attention to the random entrees like fried chicken or the burger...very cheap and amazing. Their house salad is also great. My 1 complaint is that I've had mixed service there...the last time I went the waiter was distracted, rude and pushed the whole table to the larger crabs that cost a lot more. This contradicted the recommendation of our previous server who was fun, courteous and recommended the second smallest size for the best value.

I couldn't believe all the bad reviews on Joe's. I've never had anything except impeccable service at Joe's. Value is great and the food is unbelievable. Everything from the variety of breads they start you off to the salad, potatoes, grilled vegetables, crab right down to the desert. You can't go wrong. You may have to wait if you not a regular, but I still think it would be worth it.

How can I start? As we walked in, the very ""not welcoming"" faces greet us. We asked for a table for 4. My husband met us there after work to eat with us to say good bye to my parents, leaving to go back to Brazil. You will not believe what just happened? As my husband arrived, he told the waiter he was there to meet someone. But because our table was for 4 ONLY, my husband was not allowed to seat with us, the waiter wanted to seat him in the opposite side of the restaurant all by himself. We just pulled an empty seat from the table beside us. Our very nice waiter opened the table and there was enough space for him to seat. Then some crazy lady came over rude as she could be, yelling at us, pointing fingers at us, saying that my husband had to leave, saying"" I don't have to explained myself to you, I am calling the police if you think 5 people will be seated in a table for 4. ?You told us 4 people, so only 4 people can seat down"". I was horrified by the situation. Then the owner, Hitler wife, I am guessing, came to talk to us, but instead of apologizing for the rude lady before, noooo, she went rude on us. I would think the owner priority is customer service and to make sure customers are happy. But the opposite happened. Our waiter, poor guys, was hiding because he was so embarrass, he said. The whole restaurant was looking at us. The table beside us were horrified as well, even invited my husband to seat with them, because they had 4 people in a table for 6, but they could not let 5 people seat in a table for 4. In the end, the owner let as stay, but seriously, nobody was hungry anymore, we didn't have time to go somewhere else because my parents had to catch a fight. There are so many nice seafood places out there, never ever ever going back. Oceanaire is a great substitute! And the people are so nice. Oh please don't order the chowder soup, bad, bad bad... it was the worse experience in a restaurant in my life.

This place is a joke, no reservations, no planning. Saturday night 2.5 hour wait, unless you slip the Maitre De cash. Waited for the 2+ hours and got some appetizers, was so disgusted by the scene, we just left and got some pizza on the street. Everyone in the bar was waiting for a table and so the mood was sour. I heard the food was excellent, but who wants to eat at 10:30pm at night? Suggest you get there early, like blue plate special early, or order it to go. Better yet go to a real restaurant that takes reservations. Miami has a lot of choices, make use of them.

This is one of the best restaurant's I've ever been to! I can't believe I only ordered shrimp cocktail when I went here as a child! \r
It is pricey...but well worth it. They have very, very good service (but they aren't stuffy either). The stone crab is out of this world and if you go you just have to have it! Even the sides are great! Try the spinach.\r
This place has the whole package.

This was our first time and last time. We had very high hopes of this restaurant being great. We arived just after opening 5:20 p.m. and they were already on a wait. We waited at the bar for a hour. The bartender was acting as if we were in his way even though we did order two drinks totaling $30. Then, we got our table. We sat down and suddenly our waiter came and said, what would you like to drink. I said ""I'm fine for now with water"" as I wanted to look over the menu before making my drink selection. He then said not even a min. after sitting down, ""are you ready to order now""? We'll, uh....NO!!! I barely got the menu open!!! He did not tell us his name, was rushing us to get out we felt. Then, he brought out our food and did not return to check on us. The food was horible!!!! I got the Pompano and it was very dry and flavorless. We also got the rice which, no kidding tasted like they opened up a box of Uncle Ben's and threw it in the some water. My husband's glass sat empty for 20 min. while our server was standing there talking to another server staring right at us!!! He did not care. Then, we asked to speek to a manager, and he said ""oh was there something you did not like?"" we said, ""we would just like a manager"". Then, the ""captin"" came over, we told her of this ordeal and she said, oh I'm sorry, can I get you something else?? ""No THANK YOU"", everything we had to eat sucked so why should we even bother??? She said, oh let me let a manager know. Well, then we got our check, nothing had been taken off, no manager had come over to say ""I'm sorry"" no nothing!!!! THe food was horible, the service even worse, WHY, please tell me, would ANYONE go there????

I remember coming here with my parent's as a kid, when we lived in North Miami Beach. Fast forward into Atlanta, thirty years later, I never miss going to Joe's when I'm in the area. Nothing much has changed about this place, and that's one of the things I find most attractive about it. No South Beach Neon here, and there's not wrong with that, but Joe's is just a classic. We always start with that crazy chopped salad. It's now popular everywhere, but has always been a staple here. And what to order? The world's best Stone Crab Claws period. And that mustard sauce. Still a little pricy, but it's the best. My favorite Dirty Grey Martini, and the crab claws. Service is strickly old school, tuxes and all. Finish with one of the best Key Lime Pies, in South Florida. The legend lives on, one of my favorite places in the U.S. Note: Don't pay any attention to the complaining New Yorker reviews, they complain when the sun is out. LOL!

I've been living down in Miami for about a year(from NYC)and have been meaning to get to Joes for a while now so friends came into town and figured it was as good a time as any -went last friday night after HH at Monty's, the wait was about 45 minutes but had drinks at the bar was which crowded but not obnoxiously so.the staff was all very attentive and the place seemed like a NY steakhouse with the staff in tuxes and want not. so the menu had a nice selection of seafood as well as meat entrees i got the large stone crabs since thats what the place is known for as well as a few sides(hash browns, fried asparagus. So the crabs were good although werent as exciting as i had hoped -they basically seemed like chilled steamed crabs i have made at home mustard sauce was fine too, again nothing to rave about but not bad, thisseemed to be the case with everything, the service and the sides -not bad but considering the hoopla i had heard about the place just didnt live up to expectations all around.I experienced it once but wouldnt really rush back, although wasnt as pricey as I expected again compared to NY.

My parents used to eat here many many years ago. My father took my brother and I here once when we stopped off in Miami on our way to the Carribean. While a trifle unfair to look back now and compare the seafood here to Grand Cayman, Joe's Stone Crab definitely stood out as some of the best we had. Their blackened spices are incredible. I'd love to go back.

We are from Texas and we wanted some great Seafood and we heard about Joes. Lucky for us we did our homework and knew to get there early. We were there for Sunday dinner and we arrived just before they opened so we only had about a 15 min wait only because they were 15 min before their scheduled opening time. Our waiter was named Moses and he took great care of us. Great Food, we will be back.

I read several reviews that said this was the place to go for stone crab. After waiting 2&1/2 hours to be seated, the waiter was rude and unattentive. He even argued with me that a lemon should go into my key lime martini instead of a lime. Good thing I had already had two others at their bar that were served with a key LIME and not a lemon. Other than that the crab was good, but expensive. I know you can get stone crab just as good and for alot less hassle in Miami.

I came here for dinner and as expected the wait was quite long. The restaurant itself is just like a classic steakhouse but for crabs. The decor is very pleasant and the service attentive. The boiled potato side was pretty good, and the grilled tomato was outstanding. The crabs themselves were pretty good, though it still took work to get to the meat. It definitely seems better to get the larger claws. The key lime pie was very nice. Many of the items on the menu are not expensive at all, but the crabs can set you back a bit.

It definitely seems better to get the larger claws. The key lime pie was very nice. Many of the items on the menu are not expensive at all, but the crabs can set you back a bit.

Pros: Crabs

Cons: Long wait

.

Joe's Stone crab has the best stone crab i've tasted. The rest of there menu is just as good. They tend to be busy, plan ahead and make reservations. They have excellent food and amazing service.

Ok People read this carefully and learn. Joe's Stone Crab is one of the best restaurants in Miami Florida for a reason. The food is incredible, the service phenomenal, the wait time ridiculous but well worth it. Order the Stone Crabs and make sure they are the jumbos. Also get a side order of tomatoes with the spinach stuffing and melted cheddar cheese. The wine selection is very good and the atmospheres is great, be romantic and come as a couple or bring a crowd.

Pros: Food, Service, Food

Cons: , Expensive

Food is good, although definitely NOT worth the 3 hour wait. After spending a small fortune on the bar bill still had to wait an additional hour standing in line to spend a large fortune. If you are fluent in sign language then you and your significant other will be able to communicate.

Pros: Service

Cons: CROWDED, Expensive, NO Reservations

This place is historic in the restaurant scene. It is loud and expansive; I would hate to guess how many square feet it is. This is a place for crowds and a long wait if you dont know the maitre d', (luckily for us we were with a known individual in the area that was able to walk right in with a party of twelve and get seated right away at 8PM on Sat.). For those that are waiting to be seated there is a large bar to sit back and enjoy a cocktail or two.
The food is notable for their specialty, Stone Crab. I also tried the Sea Bass, Fried Calamari and a few veg. sides and was unimpressed.

Pros: Stone Crab, Experience, service

Cons: Crowds, wait, Some menu items

In order to stay under my word limit, I'll hit the highlights. The wait was outrageous, close to 3 hours. This was mainly due to the regulars coming in, being placed in front of the out of towners, because the regulars know to tip the host on their way out. We kept getting bumped down on the list and when we approached the manager, the answer basically was too bad. This is the way they do business. If you don't like it, leave. Pretentious, unfair, and soooooo not worth it.

No reservations, so a 3 hour is likely. The wait is reserved for out-of-towners because tipping the maitre d' for a table is only permitted when leaving the restaurant. After complaining that this practice was unfair to out-of-towners who do not have a chance to move up the list, the manager essentially told me, ""Too bad. You can leave if you like because there are hundreds of other paying customers waiting in line."" The service was poor, and the attitudes of the maitre d', waiter, and manager were unbearable. The food and restaurant ambience were good, not outstanding. Joe's has been there a long time and is a place to tell people you have been to, but I, personally, will never go back to Joe's. If you go, only go during off hours. Otherwise, go to Monty's for equivalent food without the hassel.

Once you walk in to a room full of movers and shakers, you realize that Joe's is a restaurant that serves all walks of life. The food is the best, not just the crab either. The grilled tomatoes happen to be one of the best things that I tasted that month. The waiters make you feel as if you are the only table that they are servicing, and the bartenders can make anything you ask for. There is nothing that they have not heard of. I you live in Miami, and haven't been, you better go!!!

Pros: great service, secluded location, upbeat atomosphere

Cons: not a date place, close quarters

Rude host, bad bartender, and a long wait. I went early, and was alone. The host told me it would be a 30 min wait, or I could eat at the bar. As I walked to the bar, I heard him tell the couple behind me it would be 10 min. Despite no crowd at the bar, it took me 15 minutes ( no, really ) to get a beer, and another 15 to place my order. The bartender was slow & clueless. I was given dirty silverware, and a dirty napkin, and my replacement set was just as bad. The waiter who finally brought my crabs, was pleasant, and attending. First time I had Stone Crabs, and really enjoyed them (mediums). It took about an hour from ordering to eating. By default, the other place Montys has just got to be better.

My boyfriend and I felt a bit underdressed for the restaurant and stopped into Joe's Takeaway for lunch instead. The food was great. Get the crabcake sandwich or the grilled Mahi-Mahi.

My wife and I, tourists that we are, got an order of the Large stone crabs (they've got Jumbo, Large, Select and Medium and, we were told, you get one pound of meat no matter which you choose). The meat was plentiful, but I didn't think Joe's lived up to the hype. After all, we paid for the poriton (each Large order was $40), but I think we expected too much. We both thought it'd be out of this world. It was just another good restaurant. The restaurant itself, and the staff, were very nice.

Started off at the bar with a couple great apple martinis. We were seated and given wonderful recommendations by our waiter, Bobby. We had the seafood platter appetizer and continued on to the large crab claws with creamed spinach. I finished off the meal with a slice of the best Key Lime pie I've ever had. We also had our 2 year old daughter with us and she was treated like a queen. We enjoyed our meal so much that we are going to order for New Years Eve and have it Fed Exed to Indiana.

If you arrive during peak dining hours, be prepared to wait upwards of 90 minutes. Once seated, service was average, with a feeling that you're being rushed so that your table can be turned over to the next waiting party to ring up more profit. Food ranged from good stone crabs to tough, over-cooked conch fritters, average overall. Would be nice if the entrees were served with side dishes or salad instead of having to order everything ""a la carte"". If you're looking for value or ambiance, there are much better choices beachside.

You gotta be preapred to wait for at least one hour and half before being seated. Joe's is the ideal place to go for a happyhour and then dinner. You need to go in early, not so hungry yet, and have a few drinks, chat with friends while you wait. But it's worth it because the crabs are great! They are super fresh and the service is excellent.

This South Beach restaurant has been serving the distinctively sweet claw of the stone crab since the early 1900s. The founding family still owns and runs it on an entire city block below Fifth Street---formerly a sleepy, low-rise…
