be careful. The vet botched a simple spay of a female cat who ended up with worms after leaving his facility. He was also overpriced and a total ripoff. He has a bad reputation in the area and there have been allegations of animal abuse against him which his former employees will gladly corroborate.

I'm so very glad I found this page. I am going to recant my personal experiences at this animal ??clinic? that spans from 1995 ?? 2004. I first went to to this vet for his expertise with avian species. I raise and show all over the country extremely rare poultry that you don't just wring their neck when they become in need of medical attention. I had this ??vet? work on four birds. I was always happy to pay this man for his efforts even though all of them died. Each bill was close to the $500. mark. Fortunately, I can sustain such unexpected bills.
In 2004 my vet of 27 yrs passed away and I needed to find someone to treat my cats when they required care of a nature that would involve a veterinarian. Annual shots etc. I called this ??clinic? and made an appointment for one of my cats and was told they'd be happy to take a look at him and I could even drop him off if I were busy and couldn't wait for his tests and possible treatment. I declined that offer as I NEVER ??drop off? my animals anywhere.
Appointment time came and I took my cat to see this ??DR?. The exam was absolutely the roughest I've ever had the misfortune to witness and this from a past tech with several veterinarians. After the exam, I was told he would need to stay to get his shots and some blood drawn for some testing. Which tests were never clarified. After the fact my cat had been taken to the back I was asked to sign some paper work giving my permission for the tests. Not far off base, I thought. But then I was asked to sign a document stating that if I could not pay the bill they would keep my cat for up to 5 days, for which I would be charged the maximum for ??boarding?. I found this a bit unsettling and I commented to the tech I was working with ??I can't imagine why anyone would lose their pet over an outstanding bill?. Her comment back was ??oh, it happens all the time here?. Hmmmmm.
I did leave my cat that day and then had to call to find out when my cat could be picked up as no one ever offered that information. I was told 5:30 pm. My appointment was at 9 am. I told the office manager that would not work for me. She argued with me about it and I mean argued but finally relented saying ??I'll make sure your cat is ready by 3:30? in a voice that was nothing less than menacing. This did NOT make me feel comfortable with where I had left my animal for a second.
I arrived at the time stated and paid my bill of over $600 with my main concern being to get my cat back in my control as quickly as possible. Included in my bill was a charge for a ??futuristic? visit. What? I didn't say a word as I realized right then and there that my feelings of discomfort were well justified. They finally brought my cat out front and the good 'DR? asked if he could open the carrier door for me. I replied no thanks I've got it well under control. He was so smug I really wanted to spit in his face.
I discovered I had left my car keys in the office when I went back to my car so I went back into the office. The office staff and ??vet? were in the first examination room having a great ole time laughing over the over charges and how he ??really got one over on me". They were so deeply involved in this conversation none of them even heard me come back into the office. I even stood there to hear the remainder of what was being said. Not one look by any of them to the front of the office. Now that's what I call a classy operation.
The next day I took my test results and paid another vet to go over the tests with me to determine if I was correct in the fact my cat was tested for no reason on several of the tests. I was. They had just tried to run up my bill so I could possibly have some more stress in my life with them keeping my cat as stated earlier. Through some very hostile phone calls and a threat to write Tallahassee over the issue the charge for my ??futuristic visit? was sent back to me via a check. But NOT without me having to become hostile. I even told the office manager I wouldn't take my worst hated pet pig back there.
Here's my advice on this office, or for that matter ANY office where you're asked to sign a document where that office can keep your animal. RUN don't walk or even walk briskly! RUN!!!!! as fast as you can. This man is a very sick maniacal person who cares NOTHING for your animal but only how much hassle he can make for someone else's life. I am not the only one with a tale of this nature coming from this particular office. I have a friend that had also used him for rare poultry and when she dropped a cat off for some treatment she had a bill that was over $1000. For which there was little to no explanation. She too paid the bill just to get her animal out of there. Never ever again!

I have been a long time customer with Dr. "N" at Safari Animal Hospital for over 15 years. I have had several dogs and cats that Dr. N has cared for. Although some of my pets are since deceased they all lived 15 years of longer. This was due to the exceptional care that was provided at this clinic. The Doctor and staff are excellent. They are very professional and follow-up with you to make sure the pets are doing OK. I have two little dogs now and I would not take them anywhere else except to this clinic. I live about 50 miles from this clinic and prefer to continue driving here rather than go somewhere that I may not receive the superior service that I receive here. If you want to feel that your pet is receiving the best care possible give this clinic a call.

Pros: Professional and Knowledgeable Doctor and Staff

This is the most caring veterinarian office I have ever visited. I have had multiple dogs over the last 30 years, and all other vets had long waiting times, and moved us through briskly, did not get to know my pets and were very short in discussions with me. The vet at Safari proactively discusses very breed specific issues that we will likely see, ways to prevent problems, and he provides an exhaustive computer generated review of every aspect of the blood screenings and tests performed. Our records are also available online so we can track treatment. The staff treat us like family, and greet us and our dog by name when we visit. We also always receive follow-up phone calls after each visit to ensure we do not have any questions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND SAFARI ANIMAL CLINIC!!

I have been going to Safari for almost a year now and have always been impressed by the level of care and commitment that Dr. Nelmapius and the staff always give. I have always been pleased with the medical care and the staff follows through until I tell them Maggie is "100%" Most importantly, in addition to excellent medical care, I feel like they know me and my dog, Maggie. I have come to enjoy having a well behaved dog in addition to a healthy one because of all the info they have taught me. It makes having Maggie all the more rewarding.

i initially stopped in only to buy dog food because i was in the area (i live in seffner). There was a person who immediately greeted me at the door. she was very helpful with info because they didnt have the brand i usually get. there was not a sale that day but the education i received on dog food, diets, heartworm diease and almost everything else was more than i had ever recvd from pet stores or my own vet. i was a little shocked that she cared more that my dog took his heartguard and not that she sold be a bag of food. i couldnt believe the cozy, family owned feeling i got in that short time that i now make my trip to safari for our doctors visits every few months. the doctor is a straight shooter and doesn't let us mommies get away with spoiling our kids because Buster doesnt like it (i didnt like spinach when i was a kid either). i have learned what is good for buster and what isnt and we both walk with our heads up high with confidence because he is healthy and i'm the boss. safari may cost a more in dollars but what i learn is worth ten times more. they dont make deals at safari, it's not cheap. they teach you what is needed and what should be done at certain ages and help you decide what is most important first. i would recommend to other customers to allow extra time when pick up because the doctor actually talks to you and spends time making sure you understand stuff. you are not rushed in and rushed out, there is not a line in the waiting room. Any other tips i can give is to be willing to learn and hear it like it is. it's always what is best for my dog today and next month and next year.

My cat and I have known Dr. Nelmapius and his staff for over two and half years. They have always been willing to take the time to explain what she needs and why. I have always found the service and follow up to be outstanding.

My dog went in for a scrrening for possible pancreatitis. Once the results came in I had to cal to find out the results and was told that she has pancreatitis and it is possibly food related and that they want my dog to come back in for a day of observation. I asked what the observation was for and was only told that "The Dr. wants to observe her" I kept asking what for and what he was looking for but never got a clear answer, just that he wanted to observe her. On the day I brought her in I asked to speak with the Dr. to go over the test results and was only told that they would take my questions and give them to him when he was in. I told them I would not be dropping my dog off then and will when I can talk to the Dr. first to go over the test results and what direction he was heading in. Then out comes the Dr....HE WAS RIGHT THERE! Then he tells me that all the test results came back normal-no pancreatitis! Nothing. He then told me exactly why he wanted her in for for the day and what further tests he wanted to run, information I was asking for for 2 days. All of this information should be shared with the clinet immediately not with the attitude of Dr. knows best and you don't need to worry about it. Part of being a good vet is not only how well the animals are treated but how well you treat the clients and keep them constantly informed, which they clearly don't do.
