On November 3, 2017, my 9-year-old labradoodle Sophie suddenly lost use of all four legs. AVS in Maitland saw her that day and determined she had a ruptured disc in her neck. They were optimistic that this could be treated surgically with a good prognosis. Dr. Jeff Peck successfully did the surgery that day, and Sophie began her steady recovery. Last week it was terrifying to see Sophie suddenly helpless, essentially paralyzed, but now she is walking, eating, comfortable. Doctors Peck, Panisiddi, and Miller were her main doctors, and they have all been very helpful and thoughtful. Everyone at AVS (the receptionists, the administration, the technicians, the interns, the residents, the specialists) has been very kind to Sophie and to me, and we are very grateful. Before the ruptured disc, Sophie was going to AVS twice weekly for therapy and treatment with Becky Nicholas and Dr. Freeman for severe arthritis. Once she has healed from the surgery, she will go back to them for surgery rehab and to resume the arthritis treatment. AVS has literally saved Sophies life; without them she would not be able to move and probably would not still be here, a horrible thought. Bravo AVS!!!

Dr Moore at AVS helped our Winston during his last year of life at 18. She was wonderful and very knowledgeable. It is AVS' practice apparently to write a report of the diagnosis and care and to provide it to the owner. It was a year after receiving this service that I opted to bring our other cat, Mimi, to AVS for further evaluation after she was having a fever of about 5 days. While we had a different doctor, Dr Bolfer, his level of commitment and knowledge was certainly up to the standard I found with Dr Moore. The diagnosis, scans and blood panels, were certainly expensive, especially given that the fever broke after one more day of IV, but this did give me a comfort level knowing the staff were doing all they could to care for Mimi, and to provide me with answers.

Words escape me as to how to appropriately express how impressed I am with the level of care and medical expertise that was given to and performed on my miniature dachshund, Sherman. He went in unable to move any of his limbs. Since his neck surgery, he is now walking - and Thriving!
I am so incredibly grateful to Dr. Smith, Dr. Knight, Dr. Wilson, Dr. Ellis... and ALL of the Dr.'s and staff who cared for my boy. "Thank you" doesn't quite seem to be enough to express my appreciation and gratitude. From the bottom of my heart (and Sherman's) we thank you! I now cry tears of joy.. :)
Sincerely,
Bonnie & Sherman

Can not in good faith recommend this business unless you have money to throw in the air. They take your pet away from you immediately and put you in one of many individual rooms with a video monitor on you and proceed to see how much they can get from you. They try all the hard sell approaches even try to get you to seek financing..... don't you have relatives that can help.... pleeeease.
Once you say no to their ultimatum it all changes..... you will wait and wait and wait to get your dog back.
If I had only read the ratings I would never have gone here. It is all true. No compassion at all ... and they are almost all women. Money hungry is to be kind. They wanted $2500 with a 75% immediate deposit to look at my dog. It could easily go to $5000 they said.
Long story short I took my dog to Tampa and for $1200 total they saved my dogs life and showed me what real Vets are about. These people are nothing but $$$$$ crazy. $3800 difference in cost is criminal. They charged me $195 and did not diagnois the dog, they did nothing but take my money. Heartless and without compassion.......GREED
I WISH I HAD READ THE REVIEWS

Dear Garry P., We are happy to hear that you were able to take your dog to Tampa and that the procedure went well. We do realize that specialty veterinary care is expensive. Our estimate of $2500 - $3000 was not just for the procedure, but for the aftercare and any potential complications after the procedure. Sincerely, Sarah Carter Hospital Manager

I went to AVS after my regular vet found mast cell cancer between my Boxer's toes. She recommended them because oncology is one of their specialties. I met with Dr. Madden, who is a surgeon, and Dr. Lurie, who is the oncologist. They went over the test results from my regular vet and took some tests to be sure the cancer hadn't spread. They were both very nice and gave me options for Buddy's treatment. We decided to go with a toe amputation followed up by 16 radiation treatments as the cancer hadn't spread. I couldn't have asked for better treatment for my Buddy or for me!!! Dr. Madden did a great job with Buddy's surgery and Dr. Lurie, Emily and Michele showed nothing but concern for my precious Bud. They called me everyday after radiation treatments to let me know how he was doing and whenever I had any concerns Dr. Lurie was always available to answer my questions....whether I was on the phone or in the office. The office staff was very nice and I am so grateful to all of them. My Bud has a 95% chance the cancer won't return....right now we are going every 3 months for checkups. I would recommend them highly:):). I want to give AVS 5 stars.....not sure why initial review only showed 3.....

My husband and I took our child here after discovering he had a tumor. When we went to the appointment, we were at first treated great, the staff was friendly and made us feel very comfortable. They took our baby in the back to look him over and got us with recommendations for treatment. We were informed that we needed to remove some of his jaw, which was a shock to us. We didn't expect to hear that news. The doctor didn't inform us why we needed to do the surgery verses radiation. After questioning the recommendation, a different doctor came back and said that we had concern about how he would look after the surgery. Really, I thought, that is not what I said at all. After the doctor explained the difference between surgery and radiation we decided to go with the surgery. The other doctor came back and told us we needed to do "staging" which was going to cost $950.00 and the surgery was going to be additional $4000.00 When we told them we needed to get the funds together, they started to treat us different. But we still were planning on going with them and have been fundraising for the surgery, but then someone suggested us to go to Luv N Care and get a second opinion. There we were told the cost of staging was $600.00 and the surgery was $1500.00. What a HUGE difference. The only issue was that LUV N Care doesn't have a Ct Scan and needed to go to AVS for it. My husband called and told them about the price difference which they weren't willing to match or lower there price. So he asked about just doing the CT scan there and he was told he wasn't sure if they would just do the scan and would call him back. Needless to say we have yet received a call back.

I have to write a review even though I have never been to this vet. My cat Fearless needs surgery, and my specialist here in Sarasota wants a CT scan completed. It has been a struggle for me to find an affordable place nearby, so I called AVS to get an estimate. I was immediately placed on the phone with a veterinarian, who provided me information and the estimates I was looking for. He took the time to explain. I have called other local area vets and not received this same kind of service. It was much appreciated!

After weeks of fighting my Bella lost her battle with what ever she was fighting. I know that AVS did everything possible believe me I checked on them over and over again.

I leave this for all that reads reviews and like me will do anything possble for your pets.

""From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog", or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog". They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog". Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog". Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog", but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog" and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it's "just a dog", then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend", "just a sunrise", or "just a promise". "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog", just smile, because they "just don't understand".

The office staff was polite and supportive, the doctors were all so helpful. When we arrived we thought we were facing cancer and although it was still a possibility up to the day of surgery I knew how it would be handled and what to expect. Thankfully, it was not cancer and my dog, Phantom was able to have the knee surgery. He left the hospital walking on all four legs which is amazing to me. He's just three days out of surgery but he's eating well, walking comfortably and other than sleeping a lot seems to be FINE. I was especially impressed with the way in which all the possibilities were discussed ahead of time. I felt that everyone was in love with my dog by the time I took him home. Everyone was so caring that I felt very comfortable leaving him in their care. I will be singing the praises of this clinic to anyone who will listen.

After a $400 ultrasound at our vet's office suggested a serious problem, we thought it best to take our dog to a specialist before doing anything drastic. AVS is pretty much the only game in town when you need specialty care.

Another reviewer's experience with non-specialists rings true. I was interviewed by an intern, who misquoted my responses and misinformed me about the test they wanted to do on my dog. She also rejected the existing ultrasound without reviewing it, saying they would need to do their own (at more than $400). (I refused.) They also re-did a bunch of expensive blood tests that had been done less than 2 weeks earlier.

When the actual specialist finally appeared, she didn't stay long. Her exam was not done in my presence; my dog was taken elsewhere to be examined. In hindsight, I wish I had spoken up and demanded to be present for the exam or just walked out.

They had to keep my dog for a few hours to complete the test. Before I could leave, I had to pay a 75%(!) "deposit". How ridiculous! If you're going to extort that much, just go for the whole thing and make it full payment up front.

I realize they have expensive equipment and years of student loans to pay for... but the bill-padding is ridiculous. I'd probably have been more tolerant of high cost if the care had been more trustworthy.

If I need an expert again, I'll call UF!

Dear Ms. Lisa D., We are sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with our service. Our goal is to give each client excellent customer service and each patient quality care. We would like the opportunity to speak with you regarding your experience. Regards, Sarah Carter Hospital Manager

We highly recommend AVS. This is a hospital of the highest caliber. The extremely professional staff, from the front desk to administration, from doctors to vet techs, deals with very sick pets and highly emotional owners in a caring and compassionate way. They understand how stressful it is for owners in this situation and go out of their way to ease any concerns or fears that owners might have. We cannot thank them enough for the excellent care our Doberman, Halston, received. He was diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome and needed surgery to relieve the pressure on his spine. Post-surgery, he spent a number of weeks at AVS. Dr. Smith and her staff in the neurology department took excellent care of him. They not only called us twice daily with updates on his progress, they also called our veterinarian regularly. They welcomed our daily visits to see Halston even though we??re sure that at times it must have disrupted their very busy schedule. These are very dedicated professionals doing an extremely difficult job and doing it with skill, warmth, and compassion. Even though Halston was discharged and is now at home, we still hear from AVS to check on his progress and to offer advice and encouragement. As owners we couldn??t possibly ask for more! Our grateful thanks go out to Dr. Smith and her wonderful team.

Please do not assume that every vet on premises is a 'specialist.' , Make sure that you check the nametag of the veterinarian to ascertain if they are a specialist or not. Ask what the 'letters' adjacent to their name on their nametag mean.

If you take copies of labs, etc, on your initial visit, please be sure that those are reviewed while you are present and make sure they are compared to any bloodwork ordered by AVS in a timely fashion, i.e., when AVS receives the results.

Please do not assume that if you take your pet to AVS with a particular test in mind, that that test will be performed at your request, even if you are willing to pay for the test and are willing to assume the risks of that particular test.

There are other specialty clinics in FL who do not employ interns. ( interns are DVM's, but not 'specialists'). There are other specialty clinics who employ only board certified specialists, who are members of the ACVIM, . If you want to be assured that your family member gets the best of care, I would not recommend AVS. This opinion is based upon past experience with this facility and the veterinarians employed there, and some who are no longer employed there. Please see other reviews at 'yelp.com', as it appears that other people have had problems and valid concerns with this facility as well.

We also found the behavior of the surgeon who operated on our companion animals to be very unprofessional. We never saw her or were afforded the opportunity to speak to her, and even when we requested to speak to her after our dog's death, she did not make herself available in spite of repeated requests on our part. I have never had this happen before with any veterinarian , and I have had companion animals my entire life.

This veterinarian did surgery on our family member. In spite of repeated requests to speak to her, both on the day of surgery, and after our dog's death, she never had the courtesy of contacting us or speaking to us. In fact, we never saw her. I would expect more from any professional, and have never had this happen before. Any veterinarian who did any type of surgery on any of our companion animals has always had the decency and common courtesy and professionalism to speak to us and answer any questions. For this reason, I would not recommend this veterinarian.

My dog has been very ill and we have gone from vet to vet. AVS is the first place where the Dr. has sat down, looked me in the eye and said "we are going to get to the bottom of this!" All while loving on and playing with my dog. They are amazing here. From the front desk staff to the head of Internal Medicine. They treat my Rocky and I like we were there only clients. They are TRULY amazing!

They are TRULY amazing!

Pros: Amazing Care and a Loving Staff

Cons: NONE!

.

I can not begin to express my thanks for the GREAT Treatment the staff with AVS Internal Medicine gave my dog. The entire staff (techs, specialists, and front end) were very professional, caring and compassionate not only for my dog but also for my family. The price they charged, although I would have paid any amount for them to treat my dog, was very fair and affordable and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. They saved my dogs life.

My dog is being treated for demodectic mange at AVS and I am extremely pleased with the care she is receiving. The facility is clean, well organized and the staff is very professional. Dr. Schwassmann took a detail medical history and asked many questions relating to my dog??s condition. She also did a thorough physical exam. All of my questions were answered and all of my concerns were addressed. There was a quick turnaround time for messages I left for the doctor. The staff also called to make sure my dog was doing OK with the medication she had been prescribed. My dog had initially been treated for this condition by Dr. Larkins at Altamonte Veterinary Hospital in Longwood. The condition seemed to have been resolved but apparently was not. While Dr. Larkins did do a skin scraping to verify the presence of mites he did not do one to confirm that the mites were gone. It??s my understanding that this is standard practice; although a negative scraping does not guarantee that the mites are gone. After taking my dog to Altamonte Veterinary Hospital for a year I have decided to change veterinarians and I do not recommend Altamonte Veterinary Hospital. I also recently learned that Dr. Larkins is on probation. Read my review of Altamonte Veterinary Hospital for more details.

I work for a company who currently has equipment at Affiliated Veterinary Specs. I had to go there and service our equipment and train some new staff. I was amazed at the high tech treatment that they are able to provide animals with all kinds of illnesses. I also got to witness first hand the gentle care of the animals when they are away from thier owners. As I cant speak to their pricing, I can speak to the World Class service that the animals and their owners were getting. I highly recommend this place.
