I would like to express my concern the way in which Steve Manko and all the staff from the Boca House Sober Living, located at :321 West Camino Real, Boca Raton,Fl,33432, operated their business.
Specifically evicting people ( sick people like my son ) who relapse while keeping the persons deposit and kicking them out in the middle of the night with no where to go.
They describe their services: supervised 24hours, professional advice, therapist, etc, etc, and they did Nothing!!!!
Basically they conduct a scummy business!!!! Taking advantage of sick kids and desperate parents.
I am so angry and disappointed . I would like to let everybody know to NOT send their loved one to this place. All they want from you it's money and they don't care about something else. They want you to fail to keep your money !!
The Government should close their business.
I will write everywhere till somebody will check on this people !!

people shouldn't criticize a place when the big pic must be analyzed- I stayed at boca house for 6 stress free sober months almost 2 years ago- I heard every accusation in the book made about manko etc but the straight story is that every business should try to make money- carlo and sonny are straight shooters- its a tough environment to manage- mostly dope addicts bunched together w/ junky pride scheming ways to game the system- you wont get away w/ it there I don't care how street smart you think you are- they do an excellent job w/ lab tests etc..I am an interventionist sober coach and companion now- I have seen how some other places are run- as long as you pay you stay- not at boca house- you will be held accountable- and its not all about the money- I witnessed first hand carlo throwing solid rent payers out for reasons other then a positive test when I know w/ out question he could have easily looked away to keep a bed full- to reiterate its a tough environment its a brutal illness- in the first phases but rest assured you will be made aware the reason you were sent there to reinforce the fact that you couldn't stop getting high n getting in trouble if you try to game the system

Boca House was a nice place. I do not understand why parent get so upset when their child does not make it. I came through here, did the right thing, and I stayed sober. Simple as that. They take you to meetings everyday, enforce curfews and other rules, and it is up to the resident to do the right thing. Just saddens me to see the bad stuff whenever I know what really goes on. Good place. Would recommend it for people who seriously want to recover.

My friend went to Boca for 11 months about 3 years ago. He could not stay sober but really wanted to. He said Boca House was strict but it was just what he needed.

He is clean and sober today, a little over 3 years.

I worked for Boca House for over 1 year, and the owner Steve was always a good boss and super supportive. Never once was I not paid on time or treated bad.

This business is difficult to manage and service because we work with people who can not seem to make it in life. They are alcoholics and addicts who have hit bottom, usually have no where else to go.

They have been unsuccessful in keeping jobs, paying rent and typically we are the last place they end up. Boca House tries in every way to teach character building skills while having strict rules in place that do not allow drug or alcohol use. If these rules are broken the person must leave the facility immediately because they may effect other recovering individuals success.

Many people do great, and the ones who do not typically blame everyone but themselves.

For over 25 years Awakenings halfway house and sober living homes for women have been initiating the change in the destructive course of women's lives. We are confident that our facility, professional staff and experience of over 25 years, can do the same for you.

Awakenings is also located in one of the nation's leading areas for long-term recovery, which means there is always opportunity for support, including daily meetings close to home.

I don??t even know where to begin. You literally saved my life. I came here when I was broken, scared and helpless. Today, I am celebrating one year clean and sober. You guys put hope back into my heart. I really couldn??t have done it without your guidance. You are a huge part of the strong, independent woman that I am today. I love you guys so much and will forever remain grateful.

The treatment I received from Boca House, rather from the methods and philosophy of their approach to the disease of addiction has put me on the which all lead me to a life of sobriety. I now have tools which can enable me to work through issues that may have, in the past, led me down a road to the destruction of myself and others.

Thanks to all of the staff for opening my eyes to the opportunity of a new way of life!

At Boca House, I was able to become very familiar with my feelings and emotions. I came from another rehab where I spent 25 days but it was Boca House that enabled me to become familiar with my alcoholism. I wish I could stay much longer but my family is waiting. I want to thank everyone here for all your support and wisdom. This program is awesome!

At Boca House , I learned so much about myself and my life. I came in broken down and weak. But with the help of staff and therapists, they helped me get on the right path of life. A lot of people doubted that I would make it this far. But I showed that with hard work and willingness, anything is possible. Take suggestions, make mistakes and reach for your ultimate goal. Thank you to all the staff that stuck by me. I love you all.

I??m glad that I made the decision to ask my family for help. And I??m definitely glad they decided to send me here. This was an amazing place to come to clear my mind and get well. Before I came, I couldn??t even imagine actually living my life. Now I??m anticipating it. My thanks go to everyone at Boca House for dealing with me and opening my mind so that I could break down this wall that I have in front of me. I would say thanks a million times over and over but I don??t have the time. Love you guys. Peace!

I stepped out of a taxi with my bag next to me ready to fix my drinking problem once and for all. My knees were shaking and it was time to be brave and confident. As I walked toward the other clients waiting to enter the building, I slipped and landed flat on my @!#! A gentle hand from a staff member reached out and helped me. He reassured me that everything would be okay. I should have known then this was going to be a rough ride.

My therapist at Boca House warmed me that I needed to ??buckle my seat belt and hang on for a rough ride.? She didn??t tell me that she wouldn??t leave my side through the storm. I love her for that. Another therapist gently stood right next to me when I lacked the courage to face correction and tolerated my relentless efforts to defend my myself and my addiction.

Both of you and Boca House are forever in my heart and I am thankful to everyone??techs, staff and the owners??for opening my eyes wide and loving me for being a human being.

I worked at Boca House and I do it because I like helping people so they dont need to go through what I went through. Steve Manko opened this place up as a business that helps people. NOBODY does this for free. Especially a place as big and as well staffed as this. The techs and counselors are for caring, the owner and accountants are for running a business. If it did not make money, there would be no staff, hence a free for all.

Most all of these negative reviews have to do with money, more specifically about rent. What apartment complex or landlord is cool with not getting paid rent. Especially, if you let that happen, then everyone will try and do that. What is really funny is when the parents complain about their card being charged......so......you are cool with your kids sticking Boca House for a months rent.....you sound like crooks too. As for people getting kicked out in the late night.......if they relapse and don not or cannot go to detox......this mostly happens as people tend to relapse and then try and stall for hours when they get caught.

A halfway house is a halfway house, however this place employs a lot of staff. Some did testimonials...because they were clients here before they were made employees. Most of the parents I speak to are the main reason their children are so dysfunctional. They cant handle them anymore and would rather send them to rehab. Parents need to be a part of the structure in recovery. Is it so hard to imagine that a drug addict broke rules and messed up a good thing and then blamed someone or something else?

The place is irrelevant. It is up to the individual to make it work. Boca House is one of the best Sober Living Environments I have seen, but it is filled up with individuals that can make it a good or a bad place.

Sparks J. is a former employer who was let go for reasons that are his own business. Since he seems to know all about recovery, maybe he will be honest enough to say why. Everything he said, just know that he was an admissions coordinator and the daily operations manager, and as long as he was getting paid...no complaints. If it was that bad then he should have changed something, seeing as how he was in a top position. He gets himself fired and know it is the place that is horrible...typical addict mentality.

Boca House has been a godsend to my son. He's been there several times. He's relapsed several times. They are always there to pick him up. Addicts are manipulators and liars. It is not a fancy resort. But there are different levels of

My son is at Boca for the 2nd time. He is there right now. Recovery is a series of relapses. There is no magic bullet. I think the people there are caring. It is not a palace. But it's what addicts need. A tough and caring place that is affordable that can give you the tools to be the person you were meant to be. They don't put up with addict crap. Yes, people can die there. They can also die on the street. The counselors are awesome...Tim, Jim, etc. It's professional and provides many different levels of help. God bless Steve Manko and his team of caring counselors.

When I was there(about 8 years ago) I had gotten into and argument with staff and they threw me out. OK that's fine...whatever. The real kicker came when my mom had sent me my paycheck from my previous job(i was 19 at the time). I went there everyday asking if my check had come....they said no. I called my mother and she called the bank. It turns out they cashed my check and STOLE my money. I was never late on a rent payment and was not using. They flat out STOLE MY MONEY. Also, when they throw people out for using, they let other "patients" take what they want out of the users personal belongings. DO NOT TRUST THESE POSITIVE REVIEWS! Obvious staff members are obvious!!!!! Thankfully I have been clean many years, no thanks to Boca House

I resided at Boca House from Jan 06 to June 06. My friend died in there. They knew he was struggling but as long as his family paid the ren he was allowed to keep using. They found him dead a day after him brothe baught a jeep I had for him. How sad. There are many other similar stories if there was an inquary to take place. Its a money pit and the owner give families false hope and false information in order to keep the money coming in....stay as far away as possible

Former client a few years ago. Wanted to write this review back then but I wasn't "in recovery" until sometime after I left. Brochure might look good (there is no big pool, etc), but its all about the money. YOU pay for a bed in Boca nothing more. Your days are filled with nothing, there aren't any jobs, except a job at CVS, IF you LUCKY enough to get one. They tell you to put together a resume without their "good name and bad address". Boca doesn't want you. Boca House just wants your money. The people you talk to want to keep their jobs and if your son, brother or Father gets into "recovery" its all their own doing. They don't need a relocation to get into recovery.

There is no counselling, unless ofcourse you want to pay extra, alot extra. There is no big brother. There's very few AA meetings. The residents are mostly young and their parents "sent them there!"

Drugs are sold "locally" It's all about your money, IE RENT RENT RENT, can't pay your OUT. Bottom line its all about your (wasted) money.

In regards to the reviews posted here most are taken out of context to the EXTREME. Boca House left no one in a room to die, nor did they leave anyone on the side of the road who is doing the right thing I.E. paying rent, staying sober, not breaking any of the oh, ten rules that the client is required to follow at Boca House and any of its facilitys, I have been clean almost two years now and Boca House has been a great help in my recovery. My question to everyone here is why would you expect ANY program regardless of location, cost, etc. to do your program for you and keep you sober. So, to Mikes mother since we are throwing everyones name out there your son decided to go on his own path of destruction as have you.

I love Boca Raton but I have seen a significant difference in Boca due to Boca House for Men throwing people out on the street. They are homeless in Boca and it is showing big time. Please go to YouTube and see Boca House videos by helensjoy. You can contact me if you would like to help me close this horrific institution down. There is no recovery for the addicts it's only an apartment complex. Manko the owner uses the disabled to gain. In the meantime the American Civil Liberties Union will be contacted because he is using the infirmed and weak for financial gain. There is no program and no treatment. I know, my son was there and left to die in his room because he knew too much. They also put an older gentlemen out called Patrick and told the police he left. No he was thrown out because he went to the office and asked for help. That is filing a false police report. Carlo and Joe Sparks take all kind of pills. If you don't believe me let them submit to a urine test, I'll pay. It's ashame that this gorgeous neighborhood is starting to look like the streets of New York.

Pros: None

Cons: Its existance

OK i am a former patient at the boca house and i will say that i was there because i was supposed to be there its a beautiful place for someone to go to get there recover and at times there approach is more of a tough love type of thing i learned a lot from being there my addiction was not as serious as some so my time there was limited but the practice of keeping soemones belongins if they could not afford to pay the rent is a very hot topic there and i personally do not think its something that should be done if you do not pay rent you get evicted naturally .... but that does not give you the right to keep any ones personal effects ... i was there on a scholarship program and they worked me like a dog in order to stay when ithough i was done with the scholarship they said i owed the hours and charged me extra rent there are penny pinching scam artists when it comes to billing there clients and the therapy is there as minimal as it is but you got to work your program no one can do it for you

SO ALTHOUGH IT WAS A NICE PLACE TO GO

THEY SHOULD RE THINK THERE BUSINESS PRACTICES BEFORE THEY CATER TO ADDICTS

FYI

ADDICTS ARE MANIPULATORS

I feel I have to stick up for Boca House regarding the "Bad Review" listed on this page. My brother Jackie had attended Boca House and was treated with such care and respect that he lost all inhibitions regarding his ability to open up to his therapists, so much so that he is continuing his recovery very successfully, even after seeking treatment in three other recovery care facilities up and down the east coast.

I don't know what happened in the case with your son (listed below) but we had no issues with any billing or deposit (which was promptly returned as per the housing contract). If someone caused damage to the property they of course would not get their deposit back. Writing a bad review against a place with such dedication sickens me after the complete turn around Boca House inspired in my brother. Each case is different of course but using Boca House as a scape goat for some lost clothes and housing deposit seems a little bitter.

Jackie is a changed man and has actually just married and is in the process of buying his first home.

I am sorry you are feeling bad about your sons slow recovery, but it is a long process, not a "flick of the switch" and he has to want to help himself for anything to work. I am sure if you sent him back there you would get very positive results.

My heart goes out to you and i wish you the best of luck with your sons recovery.

My entire family owe a great debt to Boca House and the staff there for offering such personalized care.

Thank you
Eric Pepper.

Owner said $185 last week rent was due as a refund to me but they have never credited my credit card..Federal judge in Jeffrey O. v. Boca House refused to give my 20-year-old son his clothes and personal belongings and then "lost" them; the owner stated that I was owed a refund of $185 last week rent, but they have never credited my credit card. In recent unrelated litigation (Jeffrey O. et al. v. City of Boca Raton), in a written opinion in Feb. 2007, federal district judge stated ""many of the business practices employed by [Boca House] do not appear to serve the therapeutic needs of these handicapped individuals."
