The Orlando Metropolitan Area is not abundant in veterinarians and businesses for bird owners. Moving here last year, and having lived in LA, San Francisco and Vegas, I was hard-pressed to find many good choices for avian veterinarians as I could in those other cities. Through research on the internet, I came up with five possibilities, but still really wasn't sure which to go to.
Well, I'm here to tell you now that if you are a bird owner in Orlando -- parakeet, cockatiel, budgie, parrot, macaw, etc. -- then THE veterinarian to see is Dr. Orlando Diaz at Lake Howell. Unlike the others, he truly specializes in avian medicine. I tried two of the other avian vets; but, after after taking my African Grey to Dr. Diaz, I know that he is the one because (a) he has the most thorough knowledge and insight into avian medicine, even moreso than some avian vets I've been to in those other big cities; (b) he has great rapport with us humans, and gives you ample time and does not make you feel rushed in the slightest; (c) the facility is warm and charming, and very clean; and (d) he has the nicest staff.
His exam fee is slightly higher than the others, but that didn't bother me one bit knowing my bird was getting the best examination and treatment. On the other hand, x-rays were very reasonable, much moreso than at least one other avian vet I visited.
Also, for those of you near Disney or in Kissimmee or beyond, Maitland (just north of Winter Park) IS a bit of a haul. But knowing I was going to get the best advice and care for my parrot, the distance meant nothing.
Dr. Diaz' wife, Dr. Melissa Perez, is a practicing vet there too, and she sees all the cats & dogs, so those regular types of services are available, too, if you need them.
In summary, I HIGHLY recommend Lake Howell Animal Clinic to all of you bird owners who have been trying to find the best avian vet in the Orlando area. Your search has ended!
