Hands down, the best Chinese food in Tampa Bay. You'll think you've been transported to NY's Chinatown. Hanging barbeque ducks, fresh roast pork, heavenly dumplings, and fresh seafood (yep, they get it out right in front of you with a net). Do yourself a favor and skip the Americanized buffets in town - you won't find more aunthentic (or tasty!) Chinese anywhere. We've been three times, and each time we were one of only two tables not inhabited by local Asians - which is a pretty good indication of the quality. Prices are very reasonable, jamsmine tea (at 50 cents per person for a huge pot) is amazing, and service is friendly. This is now a weekend staple for us.
It took me 2 years to get here and am grateful I did. I had heard of China Yuan through a coworker who said this was her family's restaurant. Initially was told it was a hole in the wall establishment but after going there this weekend, it was greatly revamped. The menu was extensive and at first I had no idea what to get because it was not like your regular americanized Chinese food menu. I settled for the Sauteed Sliced Beef with vegetables and rice($6.99). it was so delicious.. I had no qualms with it. We also ordered the House Special Hotpot that had fried tofu, scallops, barbecued pork, squid, veggies, etc($12.95). Was definitely filling.
I plan to come here next weekend to try the soups and noodles.
China Yuan recently remodeled the place and it is a big improvement! It's at least twice as large with a much needed updated decor. The food even taste better! It's the best place that I've found for roast duck and bbq pork. Also, their dim sum is wonderful. The egg tarts and long noodle dishes are wonderful. They have an extensive selection so go take a look!
Also of note, this place serves authentic Cantonese cuisine, so don't expect any chop suey here.
Seated by host /child and then no one returned. Meanwhile a Chinese family came, was served tea, places set and appetizers brought. The Asian couple behind us waited a long time after us, were seated, served water and places set. Still no one came to our table until we eventually walked out. I can only conclude after being treated in a similar fashion at the Chinese grocery store next door that they just don't want to serve us whiteys.
Pros: popular, I guess
Cons: Racist operation
We are originally from the Boston area and were used to heading into China town for dim sum. We have been living here Pinellas county for 10 years and could only find one restaurant that served dim sum and they closed many years ago. We tried T.C. Choy's and the food was good but a bit pricey. Then our friend (who is Chinese) took us to China Yuan and we were hooked. They offer many dim sum items, authentic Chinese dishes as well as the standard items you would find at any Chinese restaurant. The prices are reasonable especially the dim sum items that range in price from $2.25-$3.50... you can't beat that!
Pros: DIM SUM
The place may not look grand but food is great! I was refered to this place by my friend and after the first try I fell in love with the food! Their Roast Duck and Roast Pork are definitely a must try one! The seafood is fresh! Especially the lobster and fish. I love the Young Chow Fried Rice and the Salty Fish with chicken fried rice too. Oh I could go on and on about the food that I like in this place.
This is a place that went crowded as people celebrate Chinese New Year (especially to special order the Roast Duck... yumm) ... So what can I say more about how authentic the food is?
