OK, let's be honest. Going to Borders is not about getting the cheapest deal on books. If you want to do that, start browsing at one of the online stores like Amazon.com. Going to a brick-and-mortar bookstore is about the experience--a hot cup of coffee, good music playing overhead and aisle after aisle of fascinating books. If that's what you're looking for, Borders has got it.

Let's talk specifically about Brandon. Why not just go to Barnes and Noble? Well, getting in and out of Barnes and Noble over there by the mall can really be a hassle. Plus, Barnes and Noble is often a bit crowded, so you miss the charm of a quieter book shopping experience. If you're looking to scour the aisles or a mate or grab a Starbucks Frappucino, you'll need to go to B&N for that.

Borders is a bit different. It's more subdued but oh so much easier to deal with. You can park easily. You can run in and out easily without much wait. Or you can linger for a while. They also have a great cafe with coffee and pastries that outshine Starbucks.

But the real jewel is their new (free) membership club. When you sign up, you start getting deals right and left in your inbox. Discounts! Updates on new releases! Actually, I'm making it sound like a lot of email. It's once a week (all in one tidy email package) and easy to unsubscribe to. You also can get cool discounts at the register as well. Unless B&N has changed their deal, you have to pay for membership over there.

And...the kids section is really great. You could make a full Saturday outing of going to that section. Lots of great books and stuff there.

The only reason Borders gets a 4-star rating for me is PRICE. I realize they have lots of overhead, but the price is a little much on non-bestsellers. By keeping the price high, I think all brick-and-mortar stores are forcing more people to buy their books online and then simply browse the bookstore without buying. But that's just a theory!

PROS: Great selection. Good atmosphere.
CONS: Price.

Borders is by far my favorite bookstore. The employees are eager to help you find anything you desire. They are very knowledgeable about their stock. If you cannot locate what you need, they will special order it for you. The variety of merchandise is astonishing. The best part of Borders just might be the coffee shop. You must have a cup of their delicious coffee while you are there.
