This firm takes clients in for a first time appointment for a minimal fee. I had little money at the time so I met with one of their lawyers. The gentleman seemed competent enough and I explained that I was low on cash, being a working mom of 2 who had 3 part time jobs (because no one was hiring full time). They took my divorce case and I gave them a retainer of 3000$ which was all that I had. My ex and I had already agreed to a mediation contract and my ex was trying to change it after the alotted 10 days that he had to fight it. It should have been a pretty cut and dried case. The mediation would stand because he signed it with no pressure and he only decided to try to get it thrown out after several months prior to our actual divorce proceedings.
Well 3 months later they come back to me demanding 3K more dollars. They arrange to collect 1K from my ex since he was the one who was prolonging this, and after I could not get them the remaining 2K, and calling and ridiculing me at work, they dropped me. So my original 3K was a waste and I ended up having to represent myself in court. I did really well, by the way. The judge agreed with me and he upheld the mediation.
Guess what though? The Marks Law firm started billing me for the extra 2K that they said I owed them so I started paying them all that I could. I agreed to 20$ a month and the Marks firm said okay to that. After about a year, they called me to court and put a lean on my house for the remaining money. The judge said that the firm had the right to do that, so they did. Well, the firm had 90 days to file the lean and about 6 months later, I received a new bill from the firm saying that they messed up and that I didn't owe them 2K but 4K. They said that to make things easier on me though, they would just take the 2K. Well this seemed suspicious so when I looked into the lean on my home, it wasn't there! It seems that the firm missed the deadline to place the lean on my home and now they were trying (in an illegal way) to get me to pay the 2K by saying that I owed more! I sent a letter to them stating that I would not pay until I saw a detailed invoice for the new 2K and that if they wanted more money from me, that they would have to take me to court again. I never heard from them on this matter again except they still have the audacity to send me a Christmas card each year! I even called them and asked them to remove me from their mailing list but that did not work and I still get correspondence from them, which I put in the garbage after laughing.
It is funny now but it was not funny at a very crucial time in my life!
