On October 3, 2014, I lost a very dear friend. He was the most polite, respectful, and obedient dog I have ever met. He was a true gentleman. His name was Festus. I miss him so much, and hate that we had to say goodbye.

I would like to thank all the staff at Myakka River Animal Clinic for all the help and consideration they showed during Festus' physical decline and illness. We were always treated with kindness and a positive attitude. I especially appreciated the article included in the most recent newsletter, The Quality of Life Scale. It offered a voice of reason to a very emotional situation. I was able to use it to glean logic and reason (and good judgment) at a time when those things otherwise eluded me.

Finding Myakka River Animal Clinic to care for our pets after our move to Florida was a godsend. When you read on their website, You, the Client, will be given the necessary information in order to help you make your decisions about treatments weighing best outcomes with reasonable costs, you are reading the exact truth. Before moving here, I worked the prior seven years at a veterinary clinic in Pennsylvania. I knew, when coming here, I wanted to find a veterinarian that offered good, reasonable care at a reasonable cost. That is exactly what I have found here. The caring and kind attitude is a bonus.

So, thank you so much especially to Tammy, Brenda, Donna, and of course most of all, Dr. Dawn Spakowski. You all have my heartfelt thanks. And, more, you have my utmost confidence in the future. Newly and I will see you soon for wellness care.

Most sincerely, Dawn Earl

Dr Dawn has been my vet since 1998, taking care of my cats. I have worked for her for the last 3 years. I have had the utmost confidence in Dr Dawn as my vet and have relied on her solely for the care of my cats.
This is in response to Allysa B. conflict by the receptionist of the clinic:
When the Grandmother came in to the clinic, I told her she could come and have a seat in exam room 1 with the cat. Since she was upset, I thought this would make her feel more comfortable with the privacy. She sat in the room and told me that she loved the cat so much and was really going to miss the cat. I told her that I was so sorry and that I know it is not an easy thing to have to do. I knew first hand since having to put a few of my own down. I asked her if she would like the door closed, she said that her granddaughter was coming in to be with her, who showed up minutes later. So I told her that I would close the door slightly.
The Doctor came in and asked for my assistance to give the first shot. As she came into the room she started to tell the client that she was going to give a shot of anesthesia but was rudely interrupted by the granddaughter. The granddaughter said her grandmother wanted to hold the cat while Doc gave the shot. Doc tried to explain to her that her insurance does not cover a client to hold while giving the shot, but the granddaughter kept interrupting her saying she just had to put her cat down and was allowed to hold the cat, to which doc tried to explain again that the insurance does not cover it. Then the granddaughter asked if her grandmother could hold the cat after the shot? Doc said yes, and I placed the cat with the grandmother.
The granddaughter a bit later came out of the room and asked if we could just get this over with. I told her that we had to wait for the anesthetic to fully take effect, and that the doctor would be back in a few minutes to check on the cat.
The actual Euthanasia went smoothly with no hitches.

We moved to Dr. Dawn several years ago after dealing with a "city" clinic that seemed to be motivated by the bottom line and not by well being of patient or owner. Dr. Dawn is a country vet and by that I mean she treats both small and large animals. We breed and show our dogs and also have horses and pigs. I can't think of a single time I've called for a same day or same week appointment and been denied with the exception of the few times doc has taken a vacation. Because MRAC is a country vet it's run by Dr. Dawn and one or two staff members at any given time. It's not the big time city vet that has a slew of staff members for each and every task. Because Dr. Dawn handles most of the tasks herself her clients get her undivided attention while they're in the office. It's not unusual to wait but I've never been to any doctor or ER and been seen the instant I walked in the door. I'll bypass the high overhead of a city clinic for the personal attention I get at MRAC. On the occasion we've had to euthanize a dog doc has walked us through the procedure explaining the entire process. In the days following the euthanasia we've received a sympathy card with personal comments and signatures from all the employees. We plan to retire away from this area and MRAC is one of the things I'll miss most. It's hard to establish a relationship like we have with Dr. Dawn and her staff and we feel blessed to have her as our Vet.

I had to take my 87 year old grandma to Myakka River Animal Clinic to put her 14 year old cat Lucky to sleep. She adopted Lucky from this place and has been seen there for 14 years. My grandma was placed in a room to wait and after a while, she asked if she could just get it over with. I went to the lobby of the converted home/clinic and someone who I didnt know came in the door and when I started to ask how much longer it would be, Dr. Dawn Spakowski interrupted me and told me in the rudest, tersest way possible that two patients are being seen at once, my grandma got here second and well have to wait. My grandmother has had this appointment for a week and changed it from a checkup to euthanasia. Dr. Spakowki spoke to me as if this was an enormous inconvenience and she was disgusted I was even asking. I went back to sit with my grandmother. When Dr. Dawn and her assistant came to the room, there were no introductions, no one asked how my crying grandmother was doing, or were sensitive to the fact that she was putting down her companion of 14 years. Literally the first thing that was said is no one can be touching or holding the cat while the shots are administered for for insurance purposes. No one explains what the shots are or what the shots will do to the cat. My grandmother continued to cry. I took out my phone to text my sister with an update and Dr. Dawn said to me, Whatever you post on your phone, well take down immediately. When I said What are you talking about? she said belligerently, Figure it out! This is still going on in the room in front of my crying grandmother while theyre getting ready to put down my grandmothers cat. They then took the cat, shot it up with sedative, and gave it back to my grandmother and leave her holding her unblinking, unmoving cat, not explaining the cat will just be sedated and not dying in her arms. My grandmother kept saying to me, Is Lucky dying? Is she dead? I think shes dead! When I go out to ask them to just finish it as my grandmother has no idea what is going on, the nurse tells me we'll again just have to wait. No one has the patience or time to explain anything to the poor woman. They just shoot up the cat and leave. Nothing is explained to her until Dr. Dawn comes in to the finish it. She THEN says to my grandmother this is the sedative they give to perform chest operations. My grandmother is still weeping, still confused, and there is no effort to comfort her or ease her pain in any way. I dragged her out of the room telling her she didnt need to see the rest. While my grandmother is at the counter writing out the check to the facility, the vet obviously has a cat who resides there who she let jump up on the counter and rub her face and her butt in my grandmothers face while shes crying and trying to write the check. The cat wasnt moved the whole time she was writing the check. This was the worst experience Ive ever had with any professional EVER. The only person who said any condolences was another woman in the waiting room who had brought her pet there to be seen. I HATE that my grandmother had to let her Lucky go but Im THRILLED she will never have to go back to Myakka River Animal Clinic or to Dr. Dawn Spakowski.

I would highly recommend Myakka River Animal Clinic. Dr.Dawn and her staff are great! Dr Dawn has been our vet for our horses, dogs and cats helping us with our medical needs for our animals for over 15 years. She was able to give us another year with one of our beloved dogs whom became injured, and when it was his time to go Dr. Dawn & her staff were a great comfort to us. Thank you Myakka River Animal Clinic & Dr. Dawn!

I have been taking my cherished pets to Dr. Dawn for nearly 20 years. She provides excellent care and takes the time and effort to find the best treatment options based on their individual needs. I have boarded my pets with her, too, and always rest assured that they will be well cared for while I'm away. She is always willing to answer questions and explain procedures and truly cares about her patients. I would unhesitatingly recommend her!

We understand that not all of our Clients will always be completely happy with the experience they have at our Clinic. We constantly strive to do the best job we are trained for and use the best judgment years of experience has given us. We do get many complements from our repeat Clients and hear good things from many happy Clients that do not take the time to post them on the Internet. Still, we are always interested in knowing if things aren??t quite meeting the expectations of some of our Clients.
Dr. Dawn is a pet owner, herself, having over 35 animals in her own personal care, many of which were unwanted by owners or potential adopters. She cares about all her animal patients, and that includes Chihuahua??s.
For the pet owner who took time to write about her unhappy experience, we can only say that the Chihuahua breed is known for its particular challenges. We are familiar with the ??Dog Whisperer? cable television program and how Cesar Millan worked with 3 challenging Chihuahua's in Season 5, Episode 8 titled ??Chihuahuas from Hell.? Although there are some very sweet Chihuahua??s out there, there are others that just do not have that special disposition and that is what makes our day a little more interesting. We are happy that you have since found a Vet who ultimately works out for your Chihuahua??s care.

I would never take my pet to Dr. Dawn, She didnt seem to care for my pet at all. They man handled my Chawawa just trying to cut her nails and pulled every ligament in every leg. My dog could not even move when she got home. It took a month and a half for my dog to start limping around fairly well. Also caused her blood sugar to drop all the way down so she couldnt move any more..Had to give her sugar when i got home. She only weighs 10 lbs2oz. She was fighting against them because they were hurting her. I didnt even ask for her nails to be cut.

She went to another vet today, his name is Chris @ Toledo Blade Animal Clinic in North Port. She had surgery on her teeth and they said she was a complete Angel. They are very compassionate with small animals.

I cried for weeks over the pain my dog indured inflicted by Dr. Dawn and her helper. She said my dog did it to her self. Now i ask you how would you fell if you picked up your dog in that shape. I asked for her blood work to be sent to my new vet and she had the nerve to tell them my dog was a Tazmanin Devil. My dog was scared because they were hurting her, with a muzzel on and 10 lbs, What would your dog do if it was being hurt. Try to get away right. I am appaled at the way they handled my dog. If i can find an Attorney to take this case i will..
