Man what a TERRIBLE RESTAURANT. REAL ITALIAN
I dont think so...The owner claims he is authentic and real NY italian, funny. My wife had a simple request to leave out one ingredient ( she is pregnant now), the waiter told use it was not

WHEN YOU ARE PREPARED TO STAND ON YOUR FEET FOR 12 HOURS A DAY AND COOK UP A STORM I.E. A MEAL TO PERFECTION, ONE THAT WOULD MAKE ANY NONA PROUD THEN I THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DISH. UNTIL THAT TIME, SHUT UP A YOUR FACE!

Most people in Miami know that hands down Macaluso's is the best italian food anywhere, but what they don't know is that they serve lunch too! I've been going to the restaurant for years now, and it's without a doubt my favorite place to go. My new obsession now is their market right next door where they serve lunch. You can get the famous meatballs and salads, but then you can also get pizzas and heros. The pizzas are to die for. They make their own homemade dough and then top it with their famous marinara or leave it white. You can also get everything to go. They sell their homemade marinara, salad dressing, cheese, bread crumbs, olive oils, pasta and alot more. Basically everything they cook with in the restaurant they sell in the market so then you can go home and cook. How cool is that!

Pros: outstanding food

Cons: you crave it everyday

Waited an hour for our food to arrive and then three of the four dishes were cold --- the ravioli was actually cold in the center! The veal was at room temperature.

We waited another 10 minutes, the simple spaghetti and meatballs (they were OK --- but not spectacular) --- and not worth the $25!

There is more myth and showmanship in their food -- the meatballs and the tomato sauce was not this incredible thing they talk about -- actually they were disappointing. The food was way over-salted.

The prices are very steep for what this is. The portions are HUGE -- so think quantity not quality.

Finally, the owner at this place has an ego that is well beyond who he is ... we asked to speak with him and he declined. Incredible!

Perhaps in years gone by this restaurant was great ... but not any more. There are alot better places to eat Italian on the beach.

Pros: Huge portions of food if you like to overeat

Cons: Very slow service, average food quality, overpriced

As all things in life it's all about cost benefit. The food is $15 a plate red-checkered table cloth trattoria style, but on the "South Beach" rip-off agenda.
Plate of pasta and 1 glass of wine = $60 dollars!!! - with a small tip (service was "authentic south beach" as well. i.e unprofessional and just plain poor).
Did I say $60 dollars for a plate of AMERICAN ITALIAN spaghetti????
Yes sir-e Bob.
By the way - look out also for the pretentious disertation about the chefs "thousand year old family recipees" brought over from ancient Staten island. And then check out the "gourmet" basket of Pasta they bring out to show the exclusive quality produce they use.
HELLO??? Is that a box of $2.50 Barilla linguini behind the other packaged pastas ??? Which I??m paying $30 for??
Bottom line "YOU CAN FOOL SOME OF THE PEOPLE SOME OF TIME, BUT NOT ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME".
What are you guys thinking over there ?
GET REAL !!!

We found Macaluso's last night after overhearing someone talking about "the best Italian food they have ever had". We couldn't help but ask where the restaurant they were talking about is. Growing up in my own fathers kitchen eating fresh, homemade Italian food...I am one of the pickiest Italian restaurant critics. I usually cringe when people suggest going out for Italian because I know the food can never measure up to what my own father can concoct. However, my fiance' was hungry and craving Italian so I agreed. DAD, IF YOU READ THIS...I'M SORRY TO SAY...YOU HAVE SOME COMPETITION!!!! This is the best Italian food I have ever tasted. The food is authentic, fresh, cooked to perfection. We ate Michael's famous meatballs...it was instantly obvious why the famous come for the famous meatballs (celebrity photos snapped in Macaluso's kitchen with the chef/owner Michael are scattered about the restaurant). For our entrees, I ordered the Linguini white Clam sauce...my favorite Italian dish....what a relief to finally eat a hot, fresh, linguine white clam dish made with fresh clams and the perfect amount of garlic and olive oil! My fiance' ordered the Veal Parm with fusili. Now, I'm not usually a huge fan of veal and I couldn't resist tasting and then sharing this awesome dish. PERFECT!!! This guy definitely knows what he is doing! Our server explained to us that the recipes used have been in the owners family for more than 75 years....very cool! I grew up eating my fathers food and know firsthand the feeling I feel after eating a meal infused with passion and love. We left perfectly full and happy (with our canoli's to go) xoxoxo Melis

wow this place rocks.. me and my coworker went to eat there last week and thanks god.. i think i just found my new dates spot. the food is AMAZING. my friend matias had over 5 meatballs topped with juicy mouthwatering marinara sauce, which apparently they also sell in the market next door during the day time. wow... not a surprise jennifer lopez picture on the wall looks so happy, so as john bon jovi and bunch of other celebrities..
i finished up with vanilla cake cause i personally think desert should be a main course (few more pounds is just more of a nice person isn't it? :)) and OMG!!! not even it was the best cake i've had they decorated the plate with 3 cannolies, creamy and crunchy to perfection, i almost ate my fingers..

i'm definitely coming back for such a great experience. on top of that, choice of the music (the way you look tonight, new york and all those old hits you love :)), soft lite and candles gonna make my best date next week, looking forward :)

usually i just eat a cheese pizza here for lunch

but for a special treat I'll wait for the restaurant to open and order Grandma Lena's Chopped Meat and Peas

If it's a hot day on the beach maybe grilled Tuna over spinach

this is one of those places that if you know about it you come back week after week. there is always something new to try and if all else fails just have a meatball and salad

I went after hearing people rave about this place and was not impressed. The whole experience felt a little gimmicky to me. I don't see any point to not having a written menu, the list of "warnings" about the place (no changes, doesn't accomodate allergies, don't you dare complain about anything!) is amusing but a little ridiculous. The food itself was good but nothing to write home about, pasta a little less than al dente, tiramisu watery and clams were not in shells as waiter said they would be. I felt that the prices were too steep considering the type of food served. It was fun watching the owner/chef work in his kitchen from the table, but pretty obvious that he has a huge ego and refuses to see his culinary genius questionned in any way. To me this was a huge turn off: wouldn't a good chef want to know if anything was less than perfect?

This is one of the best Restaurants I've been too. The owner is one of the best guys out there. A true genuine soul. A very classy place with respect for tradition! The food is delicious and homemade just like you going to your moms house for dinner! Do you ask your host to change your menu for you? You know she made it with love so you enjoy. Im very surprised by the negative mean reviews below. It must be someone with alot of anger and hostility to write something so insulting and Mean! Macaluso's offers authentic , home cooked food made with dedication and perfection by chef and owner from his families recipes. Those who have class and respect for this will appreciate. Macaluso's is a place of class, born and dedicated from love, and some of the most delicious food you will ever taste! Contrary to the review below..I believe Macaluso's is filled with Wonderful Karma! All those who are refined and fullof light will see and much enjoy.

Pros: Amazing Food & Great Ambiance

Went to this restaurant last weekend for the first time..Granted I am not a celebrity so maybe that was part of the reason for this experience... We had reservations for ten o clock a party of nine for this family style restaurant. We arrived on time and were promptly seated. We did not get water till about 10;20,and our repeated request for bread and our first course did not arrive on the table till about 10:50 ...almost one hour after seating down...with the salad we also got 5 of their famous meatballs to share among the 9 of us with the promise that more would be out shortly...shortly was another 20 minutes and now at 11;15 all they had served us was a salad and some meatballs...(at a restaurant known for its meatballs we were quite surprised that they only had 5 to serve us after an hour at the table)...As we were incredibly hungry at this point we requested more bread whihc our waitress rudely replied they were out of and nothing she could do )in addition to be obviously frustrated with the kitchen which was obviously already taking a holiday from serving thier customers... at 11;40 we finally got our main courses///.. a salmon dish with three pieces of salmon and raw pasta, a chicken parm dish with enough chicken for 3 ( a request for more was moot as the waitress pretty much was ignoring our table)...this dish also came with pasta that was barely co0ked as well. requests to speak to a manager were finally answered by the waitress telling us that she was the manager .... when the bill came the owner stuck his head through a curtain and started to BERATE the table asking each one of us what we did for a living and how dare we not like his food...In all my years of eating out I have never seen such rude treatment by a server and then by the manager.

Happy dining to all in the new year and if you want to be treated like you the restaurant is doing you a BIG FAVOR by letting you eat there and be treated rudely...then go and enjoy

I always try to respect the fact that different people will have different opinions, but in this case I fail to see how anyone could come away with a negative impression of this place. The food is authentic as it gets in this part of the world, cooked immaculately (even if they are a bit snobby about how well they know how to cook - the menu, which is not really a menu, has a funny way of telling you to take what you get and don't ask for anything special) and served with that italian edge that makes the experience more real. The restaurant is beautiful. Choice of music is chill-out rather than Italian, not exactly Staten Island but certainly more appropriate for the SoBe crowd. They don't try to squeez in every table they can so you have some room which is a nice perk. After reading comments here I paid particular attention to the waitstaff and found every single one to be professional and efficient. We had appetizers pushed on us, just like one person wrote, but this is only because the waitress knows her food and was clearly sharing her enthusiasm for it (and she was right on all counts by the way). Wine list is extensive and equally expensive! That was a bit of a shocker. Food is also a bit pricy, but you have to remember that you are in South Beach where everything is expensive (and usually overrated), and you are getting quality. I've paid a lot more at one other upscale Italian restaurant in Miami that didn't make the mark like Macluso's and, you guessed it, I'll be back to Macluso's.

This place is just like eating at your Grandmothers on a sunday night- with your mother / grandmother cooking all day long- The gravy is amazing- the pasta is perfect. I am a extremely picky when it comes to eating out- I have been here twice in a month and can not wait to get back in again. If you cant handle the subtle nuances of having it Petes way- then this might not be the place for you-But trust me; just like another reviewer posted- you would never ask your Mom to change her meatballs would you? If you do not want to wait for a table, and want to remember what a real Family style Italian dinner is like you can take the food to go- or purchase from the Deli next door-

This was not a good experience for me. I requested that due to an allergy could an item be left out of my meal. I was told by the disappointed waiter that the chef was an artist and you could not alter his recipes. Don't go here unless you can order exactly from the menu. The prices seemed too high for Italian food.

I have been a regular at this hot spot for over 5 years, the past few times we went here the service was unexplainably rude!! The food as well hasnt been up to par. The one thing they are known for is there awesome cheese and hot pepper in olive oil that is gone and substituted for gross, dry cheese and rosemary bread. No one in our party would eat it! They used that great parm.cheese for their old dressing, now the dressing is uneatable. The shrimp Scampi was tiny (only 2 shrimp)and cost $27.00 . The place was dead, normally an hour plus wait. I guess everyone else feels the same way we do.. We will NEVER go back , it is a shame! They need to also have a LONG talk with there servers , really so rude to the customers. I dont know how they will survive anymore like this.

In a few words like I said extremely rude concept and service (like our way or the highway), first they have the menu written on a blackboard that is half covered by a bunch of flowers and they won't move them so you can read and decide, there are absolutely NO modifications of your order no even if you are allergic to a certain ingredient.
Food is decent a little too heavy on the garlic side, good meatballs, but I ordered a Sea Bass plate that was on the specials that was $52 and I think it was not even close to be worth that much. Honestly I think for there is much better Italian for that price "without the attitude" like Escopazzo on the beach but for a much better deal I would go to Coral gables were you can find cafe Abracci or Randazos

Hey!!! Don't get mad at Mike's spot because you can't handle the authentics. You want cheap pasta, go to the Olive Garden, and Fanuccis?!?!?!?! Mickey Rourke is that you trying to be a smart guy??? Mike's joint is hands down the best Italian food around, the staff is on their A game and know what they're doing, and know their food. If you want an ignorant staff that will serve you with a smile, grab a burger from the dollar menu at McDonalds, it's only 2 blocks down and you can walk there and save yourself the uber-expensive cab fare of $4. As for the funny guy talking about the pasta being presented in a box, that's from his authentic italian market place next door. The best doesn't come cheap, nor should it. You wouldn't buy a wedding dress at the Salvation Army and if you would, then maybe you should reconsider your priorities and finances before going out to South Beach to eat. Another thing is you wouldn't expect me to come over to your grandma's house for dinner and ask her to switch up the recipe she knows works best, dont expect Mike to do the same. By the way, those are some big meatballs and large plates of food, unless your Chris Farley or John Candy (RIP to both), believe me your going to leave with a full stomach, a large smile, and a phenomenal experience.

An Italian Restaurant to end all arguments in South Florida. You feel like your at the guy's house eatin his family recipes passed down for generations. The best, take it from a North Jersey Italian-American who has ate at Italian restaurants in North Jersey, Arthur Ave in the Bronx, Brooklyn, All over Manhattan, North End in Boston, etc. This place is phenomenal, and like people have been saying, you can't alter the dish or ask for substitutes, but think about it ....when you go over someone's house do you tell them how to make their homemade lasagna or any other recipes that have been passed down for generations? Of course not. Yes it can be on the expensive side but the portions are huge and when there is no restaurant like this in Miami Beach, they can charge what they want. But the food is so hardy, and soo tasty its well worth every penny. Hey it is South Beach so, no where is cheap, I mean you can spend just as much money for pasta and ketchup at one of those fake Italian restaurant tourist traps on Ocean Drive. Macaluso's is definitely not a tourist trap, it is an Italian American gem in South Beach, also try the Salumeria/deli next door for lunch, owned by the same owner/chef of Macaluso's.

Pros: The Food, so tasty

Cons: only beer and wine, they do not accept reservations

The waitstaff is trained to relentlessly badger you to order more food and more "extras". Our waitress asked us SIX TIMES if we wanted an appetizer. Each time I said no , and still the waitress insists " let me order the appetizers for you. When I ordered my meal the waitress said, "no don't order that, order something special". Excuse me, but I did not ask for your opinion, just take the damn order..

My dining partner requested a little more red sauce with her pasta when we received the bill they charged us extra $3.00 for the sauce. When I ordered my spaghetti and meatball ($23.00) the waitress asked , "and would you like ricotta with that", (sounded like ricotta came with the meal) and when I got the bill was charged $4.00 extra, that's total $27 for this entree. I feel like I was tricked and ripped off.

Instead, dine on homemade pasta at SARDINIA (Alton Rd.) or dine at PIOLA (Alton Rd next movie theater) and order the four cheese gnocchi for $11.00 where the waitstaff is the friendliest in South Beach!

Update June 10, 2008 - My friend just dined at Macaluso's (spaghetti and meatball has increased to $25.00). The waitress offered bread and my friend replied yes. When the bill arrived she was shocked to see a $3.00 charge for bread. Another Macaluso scam! At least TELL your customers beforehand that you will charge for bread.

Pros: tasty homemade sauce and meatballs

Cons: too expensive, waitstaff stressed me out, pasta not homemade.

As a longterm patron of Macalusos and a New Yorker, I take issue with the critical reviews. Most of the complaints center on customers not being able to re-write the menu at their own whim. These are family recipies that are tried and true. The chef and owner has a strong sense of family and tradition and continues what they have successfully accomplished in their Staten Island eatery for generations. The food is fresh and delicious and served by a friendly, courteous and professional staff. I would dare any of these folks to request sauce on the side at any restaurant on Mott Street in Little Italy! You simply don't mess around with the success of these traditional Italian-American classics!

Here at Macalusos you get a true taste of New York's famed Italian_American cuisine here in Miami. They are unparelleled in South Florida. You may have to wait for a table, but that is only because so many people know how delicious the food is and are willing to wait for it while enjoying the incredible wines offered in the bar. The chef graciously sends out complimentary pizza while you wait! I recommend you take the time to experience this absolutely unique dining experience for yourself while you are in Miami! Don't miss the meatballs!!!

Don't believe any of the negative reviews you read! This is one the classiest and delicous restaurants in SOBE with the outmost respect to tradition that is often missing or forgotten about in this world, just to make an extra buck. People feel threatened when they are faced with unique or unconventional beliefs or ways..but anyone with fine taste buds and honor for good old tradition and authentic experience will appreciate this place. PS: Try the meatballs! ive been dreaming of them ever since...

Pros: Great Food, Excellent Service, Good Music

From the minute you sit down, the arrogant nonsense about the restaurant's "philosophy" and its "authentic" rules begins. And how everything is made "fresh to order from the freshest ingredients". So then why bring out the basket of store bought pasta in a box? Where's the fresh-made pasta, Trendy Restaurant?? Fine, trick me with your pretentious banter, but can you justifiy your high prices? NO WAY! $28 for the WORST linguini with clams I ever had. No whole clams, just bitter minced bits. And all bland and below mediocre. All they got right was cooking al dente. Big deal. And my guest's chicken parm was just mediocre at best, and not worth $20-plus bucks at all.

Don't believe me? Go waste $100-plus at Macaluso's. And if you disagree with me, either A) Macaluso's has shut down and a new truly great italian restaurant moved in, or B) You're one of those people who likes to be made to feel oh-so important at the over-hyped "in" place of the moment...in which case, enjoy:)

Pros: We didn't get food posioning

Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE

.

At arrival, the following non-exhaustive "Commandments" for Macawhatevers are given: if you have food allergies, "eat somewhere else;" the Chef/Owner only prepares a dish one way, don't dare request anything else; no salad dressing on the side, "don't even ask;" and he stands by his waitstaff in the event of a problem, don't consider complaining.

Frankly, I am not a picky eater (I have probably sent something back for not being right twice in my life); I don't have any food allergies; I would never eat dressing on the side; I don't make it a practice to order something a way contrary to the Chef's recommendation; and I have never had a problem so severe with a waiter to require the attention of a manager/owner/chef. On the other hand, I would never dream of patronizing a restaurant that would be so rude. So we left before trying a bite.

The food was good, but extremely overpriced. 23 dollars for meatballs and pasta. There are plenty of places to get meatballs and pasta in Miami for half the price. Overall, if you have some extra cash, check it out. If not, I dont reccommend it.

Downright the WORST restaurant in Miami if not the world. Food comes cold, the service is beyond rude, customer service is not in their language. Their meatballs are good but if you can deal with the horrid service and be insulted by the staff and owner then try them. I have eaten there for years because the food & service used to be good, but each time got worse and worse and not its to the point that its downright untolerable. I highly UNrecommend them. I have heard many similar stories from other locals. It's really a shame because it used to be so nice. I imagine they wont be around much longer on the path they are going. If you want great Italian try Osteria del Teatro, its the best on the beach!

Wow! what a place! This is by far the best italian food I have had since moving to South Beach from New York. The meatballs were amazing and the pasta perfect. The sauce was just like grandma's. The service was the best I've seen on the beach. Highly recommend!!!!!!!!
