Though I have always treated my dental health as the highest priority and maintained a set of shiny, bright whites, I rarely smiled due my insecurity from a small but visible gap between my lower two front teeth. So in 1999, after an extended effort to curtail my spending habits and expand my savings account, I took the initiative to visit a local periodontist to inquire about options to permanently close the gap. After an examination and brief discussion, the specialist tendered a spirited referral to Dr. Ronald Levin, DDS of Dr s Levin and Fetner in Jacksonville, proclaiming that he was expertly qualified in the field of Cosmetic Dentistry. Based on the strong recommendation, I accepted the advice and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Levin. Regrettably (or perhaps conveniently) he failed to mention that his brother was married to Dr. Diane Levin-Fetner, DDS who shares the dental practice with Dr. Levin. In hindsight, had I been informed of the alliance, I m sure that I would have more carefully evaluated my options and potentially avoided the ensuing nightmare that still haunts me today.
Prior to my initial consultation with Dr. Levin in 1999, I never imagined that Cosmetic dentistry would involve such invasive, painful and costly procedures and after hearing the treatment plan that he proposed for me which involved multiple implants and crowns, I was very concerned. It was difficult for me to understand why so many healthy tissues of my teeth would need to be removed and replaced to correct such a seemingly modest gap between teeth. But after some hesitation, I decided to trust Dr. Levin s judgment and allowed him to proceed.
As the years flew by while under Dr. Levin s treatment, the progress seemed to come to a crawl as he was spending more and more time repairing or replacing the previous crowns than setting new ones. I was very patient and never complained even experiencing severe pain after a procedure. Dr. Levin was typically very polite and gentle with me and I trusted him completely. In May of 2008, after expressing my displeasure with a visible gap between margins after the fitting of a crown, Dr. Levin became very angry with me and said that he would no longer provide treatment. and publicly dismiss me in front of his staff. I immediately began searching for a new Dentist to repair the defective crowns. Under new Dentist care I would learn the shocking extent of the defective dental work performed by Dr. Levin.
My new Dentist informed me that not only would I require root canals for 2 of the 4 lower teeth that Dr. Levin had recently fitted for crowns but that earlier crowns placed by Dr Levin would have to be replaced. Due to the improper fitting of crowns, I also learned that significant modification to my posterior left teeth would be required to correct my bite. Furthermore, defective placement (in 22 teeth) of the restorations by Dr. Levin resulted in gaps between the crown and bone margin and that progressive decay or ??Caries? was evident and would require immediate attention. After months of treatment, my new Dentist conceded that, in spite of his best efforts, he would be unable to restore three of the teeth to good health, and that they would be lost.
I moved to WV in 2009 and continued to receive treatment to correct the defective dental work performed by Dr. Levin. In the end it was a losing battle, and last week I was informed that Dentures may now be my only option.
While I would give anything to turn the clock back and have my teeth, gap and all, I have accepted my fate. I no longer possess any feelings of ill will towards Dr. Levin nor it is my intent to harm his reputation. I have pursued and exhausted all legal remedies which amounted to a modest small claim settlement (just for the unfinished work I paid in full) with his highly skilled attorney. What I do hope to achieve by recounting my negative experiences is to prevent someone else from making the same mistake....
Whether it's Dr. Levin or any other dentist claiming to be an expert in Cosmetic Dentistry, it is important to closely examine their qualifications and experience before agreeing to treatment. Also question all referrals from other dentists as co-marketing agreements are commonplace between specialists of the dental profession. ??Cosmetic dentistry? has become a trendy phrase used by many Dentists to promote themselves yet they continue to resist efforts to have the procedures designated as a specialty, which would require certification and training.

Who enjoys the sounds and shrieks of the noise of that gruesome drill in your mouth. Not me.. but I have been visiting this office for the last 4 yrs and actually enjoy going each time. MY husband even makes the commute to the nice and friendly employees from the front office to the D.A. This is a father / daughter business that rocks the medical field and welcomes anyone with their tender touch and concern of the anxiety going to the dentist brings.
