Red Mesa located on 4th ST on the NE side of St Pete offers a nice sit down atmosphere and a good selection of ORIGINAL mexican dishes. However, the service can sometimes be lacking in my opinion. I've recently sat over 10 minutes without a refill. The food is great - but try and find a regular server and tip him/her well if you want to make this a regular spot.
I'm quite fond of this restaurant and have been for years. The calamari is fabulous, and the salads are all pretty good. I frequently order the cheese enchiladas as I'm not much of a meat person and they're always great.
Pros: Great Calamari, Great Salsa, Cheese Enchiladas!
Cons: Parking, Waiting for a table
Can't beat this Cantina on 3rd Street or the original on 4th Street ! I have had nothing but the BEST food & service at both.
I really admire the personal touch & lay-out of the newest RED MESA CANTINA, we loved the Tacos, Tuna,Steak & fantastic Sangria & many FANTASTIC Drinks.

Pros: Fantastic Food & Service
Cons: Not a bad thing to say !!!
Pleasant and friendly waitstaff. However the food is not prepared well. Rather tasteless and greasy. Be warned, they do not de-vein or completely clean all of the shrimp that goes on their dishes. Portions are small and pricy.
Pros: Waitstaff
Cons: Food
I have been to Red Mesa a total of 3 times, hoping that the third time would be a charm. I was disappointed again. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong things off the menu, but I haven't had anything that got me excited about their cuisine.
Pros: Service is good, good early bird special
Cons: food is mediocre at best
My husband and I stumbled upon this place on the internet... heard great things, so we checked it out. All I have to say is awesome. The food was fresh and flavorful and the presentation was very impressive. The service was great as well. We live in Tampa, but we will be driving back to saint pete just to have dinner there. We cannot wait to bring our relatives from out of town.
Pros: amazing food for a reasonable price
Cons: very small, not a lot of privacy at tables unless your in a boothe
great atmosphere, wait staff, and amazing food. We went there for the first time today thanks to recommendations from other users on this site and really enjoyed the food. We had the mushroom fonduta and flauto de pollo. Both were outstanding. We both love spicy food and ordered their spiciest dishes they had. both were some sort of steak. They were cooked to perfection, and the rub they used was excellent. Overall it is our new favorite Mexican restaurant and we will be going there for years to come
Pros: Not enough parking
Cons: Not a lot of dessert
I am new to Tampa from a BIG city and I find the atmosphere and food of this restaurant to be spectacular! The mood is set by the music, dark wood furniture and lighting. The menu has something for everyone. The staff is polite and knowledgeable and have not given me a bad recommendation yet; and even with the limited seating I have never felt rushed. A definite must try if you are looking for a cool, laid-back mexi-fusion experience.
Pros: Service, Food, Atmosphere
i think they cook there chicken very well. this place has good waiters. an just a good menu! it's a little expensive, but a great place for a date.
In a group of five from all over the country, I found this restaurant to be OUTSTANDING!!!!! The presentation of the food was beautiful and tasted delish!!!! The price of the food was very resonable. A must to visit Red Mesa!
Pros: Food, service,
Cons: Small, little seating
I was in Tampa for business I tried out this resturaunt and it was by far the BEST thing I have eaten since I came to Tampa. We found it by mistake and we are so glad we did. The prices were reasonable, the SANGRIA was the best thing I have ever tasted!! The food was great!!
Try it!! You can't lose, the menu offers a wide range of food. We will be going back!
Pros: SANGRIA!! Sangria!!! Did I say SANGRIA!!!
The food was average, the service was average, the atmopshere was nothing special!
The only good thing about this restaurant is the sangria.
Pros: Sangrias were great
Cons: Average food
My husband and I always wonder why we bother to dine anywhere else? While we miss our favorite server Therese, the wait staff is excellent. More importantly the food is so freaking scrumptious! I have my "go to" items on the menu that I love, while my husbands has eaten around the entire menu and has never been dissapointed with the exception of we wish they'd add their specials to the regular menu.
We've been dinning here since it opened. Our son who's almost three and has always come with us. So I scratched my head at the "not child friendly" rating?
I'm not a fan of Mexican food, I could be wrong but none of this seems all that Mexican? I taste a lot of South Western spices. I feel this is a gem of St. Petersburg. I'm so happy this great restaurant is in my backyard.
II went to Red Mesa last night (party of three). Fortunately, we arrived when there was a 15 minute wait. As we were leaving, there were thirty or so potential patrons eagerly awaiting their table. Our server was lovely. The food was o.k. I ordered the chicken and cheese enchilada plate and it was not as spectacular as it should have been for the price. I will certainly return to this restaurant because the other members of my group were thoroughly impressed with their food and their entree choices were much more complicated than mine. I recommend Red Mesa on one condition...Do not order anything you may find in a generic Mexican restaurant., take a chance!
Personally.....
I just can't understand why ANYONE wouldn't like Red Mesa.
The service has always been fabulous whenever my wife and I have eaten there. Very friendly, attentive and professional waiters who understand and know the menu (which changes from time to time, incidentally ---- giving diners a new experience). Every plate of food is a work of art and the spicing is impeccable and flavorful. I have eaten Southwestern cuisine in the southwest of the United States, and although I would definitely say that Red Mesa is a southwestern FUSION cuisine.....the chefs are exceptionally talented and provide an interesting variation on traditional dishes.
Take my advice.......GO!
You WON'T be disappointed.
And incidentally.....I'm NOT RELATED to the owners! :-)

I found the Red Mesa to be NOTHING special. The food was average at best and VERY VERY expensive. My date and I were around 100 dollars( NO ALCOHOL PURCHASED). The place was super small and VERY crammed in. The manager acted like he was doing us some kind of favor by seating us. Just poor service all around.
Pros: none
Cons: High priced food, lousy service, and small seating space
My husband and I wandered in there after returning from Tampa airport one night for a light meal and had great food. He is not especially fond of "Mexican Food" but I am. They have a large menu so this place works for us. Lots of options that are not Mexican. I loved that Tortilla Soup. Great broth. This place is also close to where I work and we cannot get into this place at lunch. That has to speak for itself.
Pros: large menu, lots of appetizers
Cons: crowded at lunch
Unpretentious locale, and fine gourmet Mexican food.
Dont expect fancy, exciting atmosphere here. It is all about the food and service.
It is very refreshing to find a Mexican restaurant that uses quality ingredients with a gourmet presentation. The food is amazing here.
The food is very fresh and presented as if it were a work of art. As any gourmet food should be!
It is a bit plain inside. They really do put the emphasis on the food here, not the decor.
If you want a good meal with fresh food, prepared by people who care about what they are serving, you will love this place.
Pros: Fresh Food, Great service
Cons: Boring décor
Wandered in here with the kids on Saturday afternoon. There were only a few other diners so we didn't have to wait for a table. Not traditional Americanized-Mexican, but this gringa can't vouch for it's authenticity. The server was unfazed by my seven-year-old's proclaimation that he "HATES Mexican food!" and sweetly offered him the chicken strips. Gorged ourselves on the chips and salsa and couldn't finish our entrees, but not for lack of trying. A bit pricey.
The chips & salsa are great. The sangria and cheese enchiladas are the best I've eaten anywhere--it is hard to imagine that they could be better. I'm a vegetarian and always find plenty to chose from. The wait staff is always pleasant and well informed. I've been coming here for eight years and am always amazed at the quality of the food. This is not a run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant--it is a high quality Southwest restaurant.
Pros: food, sangria, wait staff
Cons: none
Excellet food, great service and well worth the wait. Crab cake salad is delicious and anything chef decides to create for the specials have always been fabulous.
Pros: creative menu, wide range menu, nice desserts
Cons: the wait
Well it does resemble Mexican food, albeit if rich Mexican's went out to eat, they still probably wouldn't go here. Small portions, very high prices - they've captured the yuppie crowd, that's the hook. Food is fairly good, rather crowded with yuppies, and just plain expensive.
Pros: Yuppie and Artsy
Cons: Yuppie and Artsy
While the food and service are top quality, it it too crowded at lunch time with long waits for your order, and I recommend reservations at night. The prices are very high for Mexican food, so you only see rich people in here, which is OK if you want to see and be seen. This is NOT typical Mexican food, this is artsy experimental Mexican dishes never seen in Mexico. A great place to impress a date or a business friend, if you don't mind the wait. Forget taking the kids here.
Pros: selection, presentation, fellow diners
Cons: , expensive, slow service
The Red Mesa is heads and shoulders above the rest when it comes to flavor and getting what you came for. The Ginger-crusted salmon is to-die-for! The salsa-n-chips and sangria are wonderful appetisers. My husband and I think it's the best restaurant in town and we live in St. Pete and have compared it to other restaurants.
Pros: good value for the fo, nice atmosphere, nice food presentatio
Cons: parking
This is the place to go in St. Pete. You just can't beat it. Some of the dishes are hotter then hell in mid July. I can't say enough about this place.
Pros: Kick Butt salsa, Great steaks, WOW WOW
For the very best enchiladas, great sangria and the best salsa! You can buy the salsa in a large container to take home too.
