Tampa is not well known for great restaurants. There are many Indian restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. The best is Taj, due to its great decor and good food

Worst Indian Restaurant ever!! The food is horrible & so does the service. The glasses they used to serve water was very dirty & oily!! I could even see soap in one of them. Waiters...they look so miserble & they are rude to you & act as if you came there for free food!!

I gotta tell ya, I'm so glad to live by this great Indian restaurant! The buffet is extensive, well prepared, and they aren't stingy on what they serve. Within 2 min. any plate I'm done with was cleared off my table and my drink refilled. That's good service to me. I think I found my new favorite!

My girlfriend and I entered at 2:40 and the door said it closed at 3:00. We thought cool we made it just in time for the buffet. We sat ordered our drinks took a few bites of our food and a water boy came to us and said, "If you want another plate you have to get it now, because we are removing the food." I told him that we just arrived and that, "I don't believe I should be rushed through my meal." He told me, "oh well its store policy." They did not tell us when we sat that we only had a few minutes to eat.
This is where it gets good!
I asked to see the manager. He replied,"He is eating and cannot be disturbed (With a very disrespectful tone). When I repeated my request he started aggressively waving his hands around and repeated that the manager was too busy to talk to a customer. Then the waterboy just walked away and left us sitting there. We just left and ate at panera instead.
I have eaten there many times the food is ok for North Indian but expensive . I will never return again! South Indian is much better anyway.

We took some American friends to this restaurant, for their first Indian restaurant experience. We are, originally, from the UK. Our American friends were pleased with the food but not the service. We ordered 4 entrees that should have come with Basmati rice. When we asked where the rice was we were met with 'I'm working on it'. As a consequence our meals ended up cold. We were disappointed with the overall experience. The food was slightly bland and there were only small portions. I came away from the restaurant, hungry. I am used to Indian cuisine in the UK and I love it. This was a poor representation of Indian food. I will not be visiting this restaurant. One saving grace was the ambience.

Among the worst dining experiences I ever had... certainly most arrogant staff who never apologizes for its mistakes, instead yells at you to justify itself.

Taj is probably the best indian restaurant in Tampa itself. The food is prepared fresh and the menu has a pretty good variety. The food is a little pricey but most indian restaurants are now a days. The plus's are that the restaurant is always clean and the service is actually more americanized and friendly.

My wife and I like trying different things, and this was our first Indian food experience, so please keep in mind I can't compare this to other Indian restaurants, just food in general.

One of the first things I noticed was Indian people eating at this restaurant, so I thought it must be authentic. I'm not sure if that's a prejudiced viewpoint, but I think the same about Italian, Mexican, etc. cuisines as well.

The food was great, I can't remember the name of the dish I had (some chicken dish, under the chicken section), and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicken selection as well. I ordered mine "spicy" and it was just the right amount of spice (I like heat). We also ordered the bread to dip into the sauces in our dishes, and it turned out to be a perfect complement to the meal. I washed everything down with a Kingfish beer, and all was well with the world. We are coming back here without a doubt....a nice change of pace from the same-ol' bar and grill's we normally go to.

The only thing that surprised me was the price...most of the dishes start at $12.95 which is not bad at all, but when I read other reviews saying "inexpensive" or "affordable", it kind of threw me for a loop. No big deal though. Highly Recommended!

Pros: Didn't have to wait at all (Dinner Sunday) to get seated, food came quickly, authentic taste

Cons: Can't think of any.

Taj was my first experience with Indian cuisine and I must say, wow! The tandoori chicken was phenomenal and I try not to use adjectives like that so gratuitously (or even adverbs like "gratuitously" for that matter). The bread is incredible. If you're a newbie like me and have been thinking about delving into Indian fare, check this place out. The experience was great.

Who ever answers the phone, which I believe is the is maybe assistant manager/waiter of the resturant needs to find another job. He is rude on the phone and when he served us. The coke was flat we requested for another one and of course flat again. I asked for garlic Nan and go plain. On a whole this resturant I thinks caters to more the to the American crowd than Indian. Not to offend anyone by that statement. I think Taj should do a better job catering and paying attention to both. Resturant ambience is good, nice decor but need really improve on service and quality of food!!!

I have frequented Taj for over 10 years now. It used to have an amazing lunch buffet, but it seems that now the buffet caters to Americans' desire for less spicy food. Dinner can be ordered as spicy as you look, and the quality of the dishes is a notch or two above the other Indian restaurants in Tampa. Taj is clean and has a pleasant decor and atmosphere--this can't be said for many places. It's a great place for takeout or dining in. And I suppose if your palate isn't accustomed to spicy foods the lunch buffet is nice, especially on weekends.

My boyfriend and I love this place for something out of the ordinary. We took his parents here for his mothers birthday and now they drive 35 miles just to dine here. It is a very small, quaint and dark setting. The food if fabulous. You must try the sag chicken- my favorite. This is elegant dining without the fuss and expense.

I think this places lunch buffet is the best thing going. When I eat Indian I love to be able to sample from an array of dishes as opposed to ordering one thing - so lunch there is perfect. :) I will say it's always hard to go there for dinner and order just one thing - but it's always good, quality and well priced.

The staff is always courteous and helpful.

It seems like it is also a popular place for large families to go, but we've never had to wait to be seated.
