Unfortunately, it is getting increasingly hard to find locally owned and operated art supply stores throughout the country and as a working artist/designer who can actually afford convenience over bargain, I try to support my local community... but it will not be here.

With a very good selection, clean and organized, this should be a dream store but the prices are far from competitive.

I had a specific product to buy, having purchased 20 of them over the last year from various places both online and in brick & mortar stores, I know the price range very well. I casually remarked that I was surprised by the price, being considerably more than I am accustom to paying (even in NYC), fully prepared to pay the higher amount without a second thought, but was met with the response of, "Well, we are here and we pay rent" in a far from friendly tone.

Maybe it had been a bad day or the stress of trying to survive in this economy is making the proprietor defensive, but attitudes like that combined with inflated prices are what will close doors.

It is unfortunate, to say the least, but Central Art Supply lost that sale, will not receive any additional business from me, will have this experience shared with the greater community.

It is a struggle, no question... but do not bite the hand that can contribute to paying your rent.

If you have no other choice but to shop here, you will find what you need, but be aware.

Pros: the only place in town...

Cons: very over priced

Rude people shouldn't run small businesses, not to mention this place is overpriced and under worth it! Not a great selection, no customer service. Don't bother.

The store is nice and is well stocked but compared to Pearls in Tampa, Central Art is definitely overpriced. I bought a sketchpad at Central Art for $16 and at Pearls I found the same pad but it was bigger and it was only $7. If you live in the St. Pete area then I guess it's the best place to go. I stopped going there after going out to Pearls and I know I've saved so much money already.

If you're an artist, you need to know these people. They are friendly, helpful, courteous, kind ... heck! They could be Boy Scouts! Seriously, this is an amazingly well supplied store. Anything you could possibly want as an artist is available. Check them out!!!!

Pros: Easy to find. Easy to park. Easy to work with.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Why go to the conglomorate art store when the little guy downtown offers better stuff for the same price?

Artists and art students alike will find all of their needs at central art supply. Conveniently located in downtown St. Petersburg, they offer everything from oil paints and canvases to regular old construction paper.

While from the road it may just seem like a hole in the wall, they really do have a great variety of items. And as a bonus they give a 10% discount to USF students.
