I was really shocked the food was awful and the service was worse. Will never return.... How do you mess up a grilled cheese?????

Absolutely love this restaurant. We always get the chicken tiki masala hot! It's wonderful. The atmosphere and good service makes it one of our favorite places to eat in downtown St. Petersburg.

1st time back after 10 years and was a dissapointment. In short, food was burnt and the server abandoned us. Also, the manager showed no interest to our dissatisfaction.

Seriously folks, don't waste your money. There are better places

The environment and location of this restaurant are great. Very nice patio seating, cozy bar, and advertised "happy hour specials". We looked at the menu of "happy hour price specials" which aside from a few $2-3 items all seemed to be

WAS a personal favorite. Charming atmosphere, nice patio to enjoy al fresco dining. Great selection of premium beers on tap and pretty good food with a English colonial theme. Unfortunately, now ruined by a horrible group of wait staff

Lousy service. Waited forever to get drinks. Refills were painful. Food was so-so. Very bland. Nasty. Like it sat around stewing in a pot all day. Waitress did not care. Even got an attitude. Just don't understand why this place is still

British Food ?

Well the owners I here are from the UK. My lass ( Lass=Wife), is from Greater Manchester and I lived there as well. Owning a home in St.Petersburg, Florida, we opted to try the restaurant out. We ordered a typical British favorite, Bangers N' Mash only to find that the Beans were not traditional British Beans as you would find say it the British section of the Grocery store here called "SweetBay" in which is in a tomato sauce. The peas were not the traditional mushy peas also found in Sweetbay, the Banger's and Mash was pretty good however.

Thank god they had Stela lagar though a half pint, still an exceptional drink despite receiving the negative name of " Wife Beater" within the United Kingdom. Our waiter was not very good on knowledge of the Bangers when asked if they work Pork or Beef and needed to ask the chief. I was offended with the Islamic Flag in the tavern considering that Islam has taken pretty much over England banning for years our traditional St. Georges Flag replacing it with there's. That I find is unacceptable and disgrace to the true British and American people alike living in the area. Prices were high but acceptable with the location and overhead. The portion did not seem very filling, but both of us left full and brought some home.

Pros: Nice next to Pier

Cons: Many

Sat at umbrella covered table in prefect weather. View of the bay waters and boats. Hostess brought menus.
Shortly our drink order was promptly taken by Beth, a hazel-eyed, dual-pigtailed waitress who had an unforced smile and who answered questions we had about menu. She brought out samples of curry sauces for us to try before ordering, which was nice. She waited until drinks were consumed before bringing our food. 2 ordered chicken curry and I had the fish and chips. Very preasant meal, topped with a shared key lime pie. We liked the place.

Pros: Tasty chicken curry and good fish & chips

Cons: fish coating could be crisper; the cod was great

Nice setting, nice place. But bad service and not very good food spoilt it for me. If I am around one day and need food badly, I may go and try again, but there are many good places to eat in SP that were better.

Pros: Nice to people watch

Cons: nicer to sit on a park bench and people watch!!

I am guessing people who say that have never tasted a good curry, because theirs are terrible! The only reason the place is open is because of its location. If it was down to the fact that it was meant to be an authentic British pub, curry and service, it would have gone down the pan years ago. The staff have always been appalling.

Small traditional English pub in downtown St. Pete. Sit outside and you can see the water at the Pier. We both got a curried chicken dish with a Guiness- perfect together! Nice relaxed atmosphere and great, home cooked meals. Priced very nice!

Always loved this place and even though the prices went up and food portions AND quality went down, I liked the outside ambiance so continued to eat there a few times a month.
But this is what really ticked me off:
I always carry a water bottle, placed in a very nice thermal cover, that has an over the shoulder strap. It's very convenient when walking around downtown in the heat.
My friend and I were seated in the outside area. I put my water bottle on the table and proceeded to read the menu. The waiter came over to me and told me I would have to put the water bottle on the ground as It was not allowed on the table. I explained that for sanitary reasons, I would not put my water bottle on the ground. I was told that I would not be served If I left the bottle on top of the table. Why is it OK for people put their purses, cameras and what not on the table, but not OK for me to place my water bottle there I asked ?
" It's just our policy" he said in a very rude manner.............We both got up and left.

The MUW used to be a reasonable downtown pub, but I think it went to their head!! The Curry is not good at all, more like a thin curry soup! I cannot comment on all the servers, but the 3 that have waited on us were not good, one even decided to keep all my change, I guess she worked out her own tip. After the lady in charge came to ask me what was wrong, I eventually got my $15 odd back. That was the end of her tip, and I have never been back!! If you want a real curry, go to India Grill on 1st ave north!!

Moon Under Water is a British Colonial Indian restaurant in St. Pete, Florida. It has terrific atmosphere, evoking a sort of clubby Englishness in 19th century India. Gin and tonics all around, what? It has a great reputation. We have had lunch there several times over the past three years. However...

I used to consider going there a Treat Yourself kind of experience, a place one would take guests because after all, they deserve something special that we wouldn't allow ourselves just every day of the week. No more. It is now more a 50% positive experience.

The food is still good, very good, in fact. But it feels like a cost accountant is now running the place. Portions have become smaller. And the menu has become confusing, with base prices for dishes and then additional charges for all sorts of add-ons that had formerly been part of the original dish. For instance, curried chicken $x. Add Tikka Masala sauce, $(x+2). Add naan bread, $2 more. Add chutney, $2 more. It would be far clearer to list two versions of the dish - one plain and one with all the trimmings - at two prices. Period. As it is now, the patron feels like s/he has to ask just exactly what would such and such a combination cost, just to have a sense of what to expect. To mitigate these (quasi-hidden) price increases, the restaurant now offers unlimited servings of rice. That is definitely welcome but does not sufficiently counterbalance the rest.

ALSO, the naan is terrible, which is unforgivable in an Indian restaurant. It tastes like grocery store bought average quality pita - thick, dry and stale. And IT costs $2.75 for a side order of two pieces! (Of course, that is plenty, since you can't eat it anyway.)

I've been a frequent customer of this establishment for a few years now, since I've been a resident of St. Pete. I come in about once a month, and prior to this have received poor service, but not enough to drive me away as their food truly is astounding. Until last night I had nothing bad to say about this establishment other than to not go if you are not prepared for a wait, and poor customer service. Last night, on my bill totaling $27.xx for two people, I paid with a $50 bill. When the waitress brought my change, she brought back $12.xx, shorting me by $10. I was truly going to leave her a decent tip as she'd gotten the orders correct, and kept up with the drinks fairly well. I was appalled at this, I understand that the economy is tough for everyone but STEALING is not the way to get what you want. This was nothing short of pure thievery as when confronted she gave me a $10 bill right out of her pocket and muttered something about it being a long day. That being said I will never bring my business or recommend this restaurant to another person ever again. Congratulations Moon Under Water, you've finally shown what poor quality of people you hire, and may that be a reflection of your management/ownership. That being said, if you are looking for someone to rip you off, by all means go here, the food is great. But, I'm quite certain if they were of the mind to attempt thievery with a cash consumer, they may steal your credit card information as well.

Pros: Delicious curries, near downtown venues such as BayWalk

Cons: Service, Parking can be difficult to find, Quality of Waitstaff is Questionable at Best

After attending the wonderful opening of the new wing of the Fine Arts museum, my daughter and I wanted to eat somplace close. We came upon a very nice woman walking her dog and she highly recommended Moon Under Water. We header over in eager anticipation.
We were seated quickly and the hostess brought us menus and we started to look the choices over. Our waitress was quite a bit on the sullen side. I am not sure why...working on Easter? Bad night with the boyfriend? We didn't let it let her ruin our mom and daughter day.
Once we decided, the Baked Brie was wonderful. We had never had this before and although on the pricy side, it was worth it to a sense. I would actually back off from the price of this a few dollars to make it more reasonable. I had Chicken Curry -medium spicy, it was delcious. It came to our table hot and the rice was also wonderful and I could have as much as I wanted. I was a bit dismayed when asking for a second portion, instead of removing my first dish, the waitress plopped it down into the dirty silver bowl. When I had finished my dinner, she commented on my appetite which I thought was borderline rude. My daughter had Vegie Shepards' Pie, she wasn't really crazy about this...it seemed to need some spice or something.
Over all, I would return, but management, if you happen to read this, please tell your staff that as their job, they should be polite and caring. Fake it if you have to...but this insolence has got to stop. From reading some of the other people's reviews, I would say you have a problem with your rude staff. Even though you have a nice location and been here for a while, even Rome fell. So, step up to the plate and tell your staff to get with it. In this economy, it is a pleasure to eat out that I do not take for granted and neither should your staff.

We really do enjoy this place. Order the hot curry and it's hot & spicy (the servers will warn you on this too so tender tummies beware) comes with homemade pappadam, mango chutney and pickled onion. YUMM! Have had mixed experiences here though. Have come in for romantic dinners and had spot on service other times stopped by for a pint and crabcakes (baked-not fried) and waited 20 mins to be served. If you do have to wait, it's well worth it! Inside its English colonial with lots of wood and new friends to be made at the bar. Outside has covered patio seating as well as sidewalk seating. I definitely recommend this place!!

Ive been to moon under water several times, and mostly have had a wonderful experience everytime. Some servers are definately better than others. Great fish and chips and samosa's, love the calimari! I love this place mostly because its indigenous and unique. The inside looks like an english pub, trendy/casual. Great beer selection, great cider. Have always had much better service when i sit inside, but outside is nice. , can be romanitic, fun. all around one of my favorite places in downtown.

I have been traveling to Tampa for work this year and started staying in St Pete because it felt more real and I liked the people. I found "Moon Under Water" based on a recommendation and I wasn't disappointed. The food is very good, great location, but, more importantly, the staff truly care about their customers. There is no better way to enjoy St Pete than by starting, staying, or ending your night on the water at "The Moon." Management is great and check in with Fred at the bar. He's the greatest; have him say "pahhk the cahhh," for you.

I was denied a plastic cup of ice to take to my dog who was in the car (as there is a park across the street). The server basically insinuated that I was going to "smuggle" a 1/3 cup watered down cocktail out of the restaurant with the plastic cup. How insulting! Will never go back again.

We have been going to the "Moon" for many years and had always been one of our favorite places. I would have given it a four or five star until now. Yes, the service can be good or bad, but isn't that the case now-a-days in any restaurant? But the "Moon" has great fish & chips and curry dishes as well as salads and is one of the few places with character where you can sit outside and still hold a conversation. Now for the reason for the three stars. There is no reason to ban dogs after all these years, it was an ill thought out, unreasonable reaction on thir part. The solution? Take the lead from the airlines and limit the amount allowed on the patio at any one time, post in flyer form a set of doggie rules at the tables, but by all means don't penelize us long term customers by no longer allowing the good ground sitting, quiet dogs. We for one will never be back and have gone out of our way to tell anyone who will listen how bad it is.

I have been going to the Moon for several years now and it remains one of my favorite places to go. The staff treats their regulars like family and the restaurant is one of the coziest places in downtown St. Petersburg. Their curry will make you crave it and the fish and chips are huge!! They have great beer and a wonderful location. I don't understand the negative publicity because myself and others have been going there for years with no problems. They have their policies about split checks, but they will work with you. They are no longer allowing dogs because of recent complaints which is sad because it was part of their charm, but as I was told, they never had complaints until it became a law. Overall, this restaurant is quite unique and over many years has never lost its comfort. Definitely worth a try!!

Love to stop here for (real!) iced tea and a light snack. Food has ranged from delicious to so-so. Would go back, but the dog-friendly atmosphere and the dog owners' casual attitudes about their dogs sitting on the tables and/or the chairs is a bit much. We saw a dog recently slide all over the table with the owners thinking it was "cute." It was, but the waitstaff did not seem to give their (posted dog rules) attention to sterilizing the table after the thoughtless dog owners left. It's really more about the dog owners than the restaurant, but Moon Under Water needs to be sure people who see this are assured that the table will be dog-germ-free after wiping it down.

The atmosphere is great, inside and outside, and the curry dishes are quite tastey, but their unwillingness to take reservations for a weekend night is ridiculous - it took them TWO HOURS to seat a party of 8 on a Friday night - if some of our party hadn't been so set on a specific dish we would have left. After about 1.5 hours we were offered a round of drinks. I fully understand that they lose sales when large parties don't show up for reserved tables, but you can make large parties guarantee the reservation on a credit card with a '50% of comparable-party-sized bill penalty' for no-shows - not an unusual practice. I usually love this restaurant, but it was SUCH a let-down to be pushed aside for two hours (while watcing SEVERAL parties of 4 get seated ahead of us), I'll really think twice before dining here with more than 2 or 3 people.

.

I've been there several times and never quite sure of the quality of the food, which is surprising given they say they havent changed chefs. The desserts arent very good, (I've tried several) and certainly not worth the price ($6.25 for a very small piece of key lime pie that was sicky sweet and lumpy.) The ambience inside is a fun place to drop in and have a beer, the outside patio is great for just hanging out and being near the water, but be prepared for below average service if they get the least bit busy. Fish and chips were cooked way too hard and they cant seem to get the right degree of doneness on the burgers. All in all, I dont think I will be going back. Oh, and check your signed credit card receipt against what is actually charged to your account. They seem to have trouble with that as well.

The curry and fish and chips are incredible! With their great atmosphere and patio seating, Moon Under Water is one of the top restaurants in downtown St. Pete.

The food is billed as authentic English, Indian etc ...........don't believe it. It's a very bad attempt at other nations classic dishes. They should stick to American cooking, and do one thing well, instead of several thing indifferently.

I love the dark woods and intimate feeling inside. The curry is absolutely amazing, even better when you order it HOT! The Thai Curry soup is also a favorite, even as a light meal by itself. While it is a bit pricey, I think the food is worth it. I take all St. Pete newbies here to show off the good food, great beer (best Black and Tan in the area), and the excellent atmosphere. Overall, I highly recommend.

Food was good, not great. Portions are small, price is high! Much of the food is cool to cold when served, might be better if it was warmer. Curry is pretty good, what there is of it. The burger was okay, nothing special, cool to cold. The fries were also on the cool side - I have been 4 times looking for the good side, haven't found it yet.

My husband and I absolutely love this place- best place to have lunch in St. Pete hands down. Hardly ever choose anyplace else. The patio is a fantastic place to hang out year-round, and the curry is scrumptious, but I think it's the awesome beer selection that we like the best! True, the service could be a bit more prompt, but nine times out of ten they are outgoing and friendly, so it's easy to forgive the lag. All in all, guaranteed to give a great St. Pete experience!

Try a patio seat and you won't regret it. With views of the Vinoy and the pier area this is a great spot for enjoying the downtown twilight and people watching. A truly relaxing environment, you almost feel like a tourist on vacation! Patio seats are best enojyed before the summer humidity sets in. Within walking distance to many attractions.

They have probably one of the prettiest patios in town. Fans in the summer, heated in the winter, it is extremely comfortable. The service can be very inconsistent, however. We have encountered some of the dumbest and most ineffectual hostesses ever there (even if they WERE cute). We generally find that it's hard to get your waiter's attention; they could do with some more teamwork within their staff and that might improve. The food is excellent and they offer some very original and DELICIOUS specials. Great beer selection.

What a great place to eat, drink and just hang out. The staff is like a big, friendly family that adopts all who enter. The food is a good value and tastes wonderful. From the mild (grilled cheese) to wild (curry dishes to make you burn!) there's something for everyone. Take a trip to the Moon and enjoy!

Moon under water is a local secret. They have wonderful Indian food and the fish and chips are to die for. The food and service is consistantly superb. The spiciness is made to order. I order the curry extra spicy and they are the only restaurant that takes me seriously! You will keep coming back for more.

The food is very good and the atmosphere is great. The beer selection is top notch. You have to try the fish & chips on Friday night and the view when you sit outside is one of the best in St. Petersburg!

If it weren't for the beautiful area and great location this place would have been out of business a long time ago. The food is mediocre at best and the service is abysmal. The waitress copped an attitude because we came in with a party of eight! Imagine that, what would have been at least a sure fire $40 tip was greatly reduced because of the attitude alone... Pack a basket or pick up takeout and sit in the park and enjoy the only thing this place has going for it... Location.
