I have never taken the time to write a review of anyone before, but boy am I frustrated, mad and every other feeling you can negatively think of! My husband and I were on another chartered fishing trip out of Clearwater Florida. We had a great day and my husband caught a 22inch lane snapper which is said to be a bigger length for it being a Lane. The captain did not push us to mount this fish but when we said about mounting it, he said I can take care of that for you. With questioning him about price and quality, we put our trust in him and gave him the deposit by credit card, and left later knowing we would get the bill for the rest. A month later I get a bill for the second half of the 238 dollars that we owe but also are being charged 120 dollars crate fee and 88 dollars to ship whether they ship to PA or locally to FLA. We were never told this by our captain and the receipt was such small lettering that you could not read it well. After this bill for a 22 inch fish I called Gray to talk about shipping and these fees they were nasty, ignorant, forceful and would not cancel my order and refund my money even though the fish was not even started, because benounced to us there was a nonrefundable statement for deposit on the paper that was not told to us and we did not see. When I said about back charging my credit card they said "go ahead and try to fight it, we will win we have done it many times" WOW... so needless to say I wasn't going to give them another dime and lost my deposit. Turns out the nonrefundable deposit goes right to the captain as his commission. So over the internet I spoke with 3 other taxidermists in Florida and all were very much aware of Grays scams on tourists and one time fisherman that Grays and the captains prey on. I ended up going with Browns Taxidermy out of Cape Canaveral FL super nice guy, he has a website, for a total of 234.30 and that is shipped to my door. This total is less that my initial deposit. BEWARE OF GRAYS!!!!!!!

I also fell for the hard sell from the scammers on the boat and docks in Las Cabo last weekend. This was my son's first time deep sea fishing and the captain did everything he could to hook the stripped marlin even though we had told him we were only looking for tuna and dorado we could eat. No Billfish! He came flying down from his chair, grabbed the pole to hook the marlin which was quite a feat I much say. Then after my son reeled it in he had to club it to death because it swallowed the bait. Did I mention he was wearing a Gray's Taxidermy Shirt? After that it was a hard sell to my son to have his trophy - once in a lifetime fish mounted. We said no over and over again and finally asked him to take us in early because we were no longer enjoying the trip. We were tired and hot and just wanted to get away. Well as soon as the boat landed we were attacked by more Gray's/Atlantic representatives (same company) who basically would not take no for an answer. I told them my son could not afford it and we just wanted to go but we ended up agreeing after they promised it would be a Mount of His Fish (head, tail, fins and skin) and the total would be $1000 plus $280 shipping max. We would have agreed to anything at this point just to get away from the high pressure lying sales representatives. Only after we returned to the hotel room were we able to read what we had been pressured into signing. It said We are not responsible for anything our sales reps tell you and this is not a mount but a fiberglass replica of a similar size and color fish. How could the company not be responsible for what their sales people told us? Is this legal? Is this ethical? And then there was to kicker - Deposit Nonrefundable. We left messages we wanted to cancel right away. They were rude, cancelled and are keeping the $500 deposit. BBB here I come.

Unethical sleaze-bag scammers.

I fell for the exact same scam as all the other reviewers on this board. Young son catches trophy 91" sailfish out of Cancun. Boat mates do hard sell to take it for mounting by Gray. In heat of moment, I agree. My intuition told me something was wrong with this but after long day in the sun with lots of Corona in me, I didn't think it through too much.

By the time we're back at the marina, the price is 2x. After I hear about shipping and crating, price is 2.5x.

But the worst part is that we killed the fish unnecessarily. I'm a committed catch-and-release angler and this was the first time I'd ever taken a fish for mounting purposes. The mate flat out lied to me, saying they would freeze the fish and send it to Gray in Florida. I knew that didn't sound right but let it go. Sure enough, a few days later I learned that I'm paying all this money for a fiberglass replica. Sure enough, it says so in the fine print of the contract -- but the mate didn't mention this out in the ocean when we had to made the decision to kill the fish.

I am appalled by this unethical business behavior and will be reporting Gray to the Florida Better Business Bureau.

GRAY TAXIDERMY IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM! I wish I had seen the reviews before I got screwed as well. Caught a nice fish a week ago. Captain asked if we were interested in mounting it (key word, MOUNT). It was our sons first deep sea fish and considered it. The captain said, "we will prepare the fish and send to Gray for mounting." I was Quoted 800.00, made 465.00 deposit. Less than a week later I get a statement for the balance PLUS ANOTHER 191.00 for crating with shipping charges pending!!! I emailed for shipping price and that was almost ANOTHER 200.00!!! Asked for a refund and got, "work has started, no refund". If you are planning on fishing in Mexico and get a nice catch, take a picture and shop around. You will find places half the price of Gray. Read reviews after mine, they are just more of the same story. STAY AWAY FROM GRAY TAXIDERMY!!!!!

SCAMMERS..
This company is 110% fraudulent..
Let me quote direct from their flyer "MOUNT YOUR CATCH" - This is a down and out lie.. Instead "your catch"will be taken out the back and cut up and handed out to the locals on the dock. And then 3 months later Grey's will supply you with a fancifully painted resin model of a vaguely similar sized fish.. NOT YOUR CATCH, but a plastic model that has nothing to do with your catch what so ever..
GREY'S TAXIDERMY - has absolutely nothing to do with Taxidermy what so ever..
Being involved in the Resin Model Business myself I could make the same thing and have change out of $500, Yet they are trying to extort $2400 plus out of me. NOT ONLY FRAUDULENT but also A RIP-OFF..
If I was actually getting my "catch" mounted as alluded to then I would be very happy,
but I am not.. This is nothing but GROSS MISREPRESENTATION.. BEWARE !!!!

I copied and pasted another posters comments on here, because the exact same thing happened to me. This company is garbage and what they are doing should be illegal.

There is a major scam that happens with the saltwater deepsea fishing business along the east coast of Florida, Mexico and parts of the Carribean. Every single charter boat that operates in these areas is on commission with Gray Taxidermy. When a customer catches a decent fish the charter boat captain pressures the customer to have the fish mounted and of coarse they always recommend Gray's. The charter boat captain always quotes a low price that is approximately one third of the actual cost in order to fool the costomer into paying the non refundable deposit. The charter boat captain tells the customer that they have to decide now if they want to have the fish made into a trophy because it has to be placed on ice and shiped to the taxidermist immediately. This is a total lie because once the charter boat captain has your money he throws your fish into the nearest garbage dumpster and sends only the dimensions and billing information to Gray Taxidermy. In a few weeks the customer will receive a large invoice from Gray asking for more money before any more work can proceed. When the customer complains that this is far more then they were quoted by the charter boat pirate they are told that the charter boat captain was only taking a guess and the actual price is significantly higher. When you ask for your money back you are told that work has already been done on your trophy and therefore, the deposit can not be refunded. This is a total lie because your actual trophy is long gone and Gray is only going to start painting a plastic replica once you have given them lots more money. Once they have more money they send the customer another large invoice for crating charges. The customer will now have to pay a couple of hundred dollars extra to have the plastic fish stuffed into a cardboard box. But wait! We're not finished yet. The customer will now receive another invoice asking for several hundred dollars in shipping charges and unless you pay them you will not receive your plastic fishy, which you still think is your actual trophy. Therefore, the customer actually ends up paying approximately triple the price that they were quoted on the charter boat. The biggest problem is that neither Gray Taxidermy or the charter boat operators could possibly care loss that customers are angry about being ripped off. They are not looking for repeat business or happy clients. They milk the tourist traffic and there are always more unsuspecting tourists flocking through every year. I have done a lot of saltwater deepsea fishing and have caught some really nice trophies. Here is what I recommend everyone to do. First, always ask the charter boat captain if you get to keep all of the fish that you catch before you sign up for the trip. If you are not allowed to take the trophy to your own taxidermist find another charter boat. Once you have caught a nice fish you can then take it to a taxidermist of your choice and receive an honest quote for the actual price of the trophy. Then you can decide if you want to have it done or not, without a charter boat pirate telling you that you have to decide in the next three minutes or the fish is going to start rotting away to nothing. The most cost effective way to have a trophy made is to very carefully take some nice closeup photographs of your trophy and then very carefully take several accurate measurements of the length, girth, tail span, etc. Then, when you go home contact a local taxidermist who can then make a plastic replica for you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a plastic replica provided that the customer is aware of the fact that this is a replica and not the actual fish that you caught. If the cost is too high, simply keep the photographs and measurements in a safe place and you can still have your replica made twenty years from now if you change your mind. I would strongly advise everyone to avoid Gray Taxidermy. By using a local taxidermist you will also save a great deal of money on crating, shipping and handling charges. In fairness to Gray Taxidermy, their plastic replicas are very beautiful. However, the customer is usually is such a bitter mood by the time that they receive it because they have been deliberately lied to about the actual cost, they have received multiply invoices asking for more money and they have received a plastic fishy instead of their trophy. Unfortunately, I learned about this scam the hard way and hopefully this will help other fishermen to avoid the same grief that I experienced. Good fishing everyone and BEWARE!!! Gray Taxidermy and their band of pirates are out there and not to be trusted.

Top notch business... Gray Taxidermy treated me like a VIP when getting my fish replica. Of course this should be the case anytime a company is selling you something but we all know its far from the truth. The girls in customer service and shipping really made my experience a great one. There where some initial issues with my shipping address but it all worked out great. The fishmount itself looks incredible too. Highly recommend this company. Just make sure you ask the questions upfront. Its easier to sort out any issues before the fish is shipped.

Gray Taxidermy is the undisputed king in mounting fish. IMO there is no one who can create a fish that look as realistic as theirs. They are not cheap but the paint job and quality of their "fish" are sick. I got myself Grouper and a dolphin and they are both impressive.

Incredible looking painted fish. The mount even has a texture like the real fish. I love Grey Taxidermy and will recommend them in the future. If you don't believe me check out their website and see for yourself. They are on Facebook as well.

I will recommend Gray Taxidermy to all my fishing buddies. The quality and detail in the fish replica is amazing. A few years ago I used KingSailfish mounts to create my fish but compared to Grays their fish just look like a plastic fish. Gray has such detail in their mounts that they almost look like the mount is a live.

I took a trip down to Gray Taxidermy a few years ago and got a tour of their facility. What an impressive operation. THere i fish hanging everywhere. painters are creating amazing replicas and I saw fish species that I never seen before. Really cool.

So now when I finally caught my first Red Snapper I wanted to have Graytaxidermy create a fishmount for me. As expected it came out beautiful and now I am hooked. I want to catch as many species as possible to start building my own trophy wall.
Thank You to all at gray taxidermy for a great job.

I can only speak for myself but the fish (mount) that I bought from Gray Taxidermy looks almost exactly like the fish I caught. I went on a charter trip in Mexico and the crew informed me about the process. I was told that I can release the fish after I get the measurements and then have it mounted by gray's if I like. They asked if I wanted to use any real parts but I declined so we released the fish.
After about 2 months I got my mount and it looks spectacular. It was not the cheapest thing I ever bought but looking at the fish I can see where the money went. It is very accurate in terms of the paint job and the quality looks impeccable. So to all the people here stating they are ripped off I really do not see where they are coming from. I read the contract that I signed and it is all clearly stated. What you buy is what you get.

RIPOFF!!!! Buyer BEWARE!
My husband and I agreed to have a dog fish mounted at a cost of less than $700. When all the statements starting showing up at home it was going to cost in almost $1200. When I signed the contract the deck hand on the boat took me into the cabin where it was so dark I couldn't even read everything on the contract. I asked him and trusted him to be honest about what the contract said. I even told him that I couldn't see the contract. My husband called to ask for a refund and they would come down on the price but wouldn't issue a refund. Unless you want to end up paying double the cost for a mount that looks like your fish stay away from these people. They are crooks!

This company is a complete rip off and they are highly effective at running their scam. It all starts with the captain who is making a commission off of this betrayal. He will probably tell you just about anything you want to hear. What he should be saying is, "would you like to purchase a fake plastic fish replica for twice the price as anyone else charges and then have them charge you 180 dollars for a carboard box and call it crating charges and then have them tell you that you owe 200 dollars in shipping charges on top of all of that" Let's see how many you sell once you are telling the truth. That's just the beginning, then you get to listen to the sales manager tell you how they are the best and that the mount will be so amazing. Amazing = only 1 eye and only one side painted in Gray taxidermy land. By the way, taxidermy means to work with animal skins. Where is the skin? I'll tell you. The captain chopped it up and used it for bait the next day along with the rest of your fish that he never shipped to Florida. Where is my fish? My poor fish is dead and gone for no reason at all.... Your best bet is to email the sales manager and get him to admit things via email especially the part where you tell them to stop work asap. Good Luck. Gray sucks.

Business Response:

In response to Adam we like to first say that we are sorry that he sees our business in this way and that his experience is negative. Even if he is entitled to his own opinion we do need to point out that what he is describing is not factual. Gray Taxidermy takes pride in providing a top quality product and throughout the entire shopping process we are clear to the customer of what they can expect and what options they have. This include the type of fishmount, the cost associated with the fish mount, itself, shipping and crating cost. In this review a $180 crating charge and a $200 shipping cost is pointed out. This could actually be true. Anyone who has purchased a product from us know the work and detail that goes in to each order. Our mounts ship in either a reinforced cardboard box or a hand-built wooden crate (see website for pictures). Some of these boxes and crates very large and of course there will be a shipping cost associated with this as with any thing that requires shipping. A customer however is welcomed to pick their mount up themselves. Included in the shipping & crating cost is also insurance. Each product leaving our facility is fully insured, so in case of any damage that may have occurred during shipping we will ship it back, repair or replace it with no cost to the customer. Now to specify the materials used to build our fishmounts. They are certainly not plastic. They are actually created by hand out of fiberglass. A very durable material which will ensure that the trophy mount will last for a very long time. To address the name, we are fully aware that the phrase "Taxidermy" originates from describing the process of making a skin mount. We actually offer this service as well. However most customers that come to us prefer the fiberglass replica since it will last much longer in perfect condition. A skin mount will eventually become fragile and easily break. Most fresh and saltwater fish have a lot of oil in their skin and it is near impossible to get all of it out when preparing a skin mount. So eventually this oil or grease will come to the surface which will make the skin peel and loose its nice, natural coated texture. We also like to address the reviewers concern where its indicated that we only use one eye or only paint the mount on one side. Again this is up to the customer. We offer fully painted fish mounts where you can get a 360 degree reproduction of your fish. Basically we can create whatever the customer wants us to create. To say that we are the best would obviously be a subjective statement. However a customer can rest assured that we take pride in our product and customer service. The fact that most of our customers are repeat customers is proof enough that we are doing a good job. More information can be found on our website graytaxidermy.com. and customers are welcomed to call us for any additional info needed. Thank You, The Gray Taxidermy Team

My experience was different than the folks that feel they were ripped off. I was on a charter trip out of Ft. Lauderdale on the Foxsea with Captain JB Sirgany. Before the ship left the dock he explained to us what happens if you catch a trophy fish. He said he could give us estimates based on the size of the fish and that crating and shipping are extra. Captain JB told us there would be a deposit and said I'm telling you this now so in the heat of the moment you don't make an unrational decision. The invoice gave an estimated crating charge so I wasn't taken back by any of the charges. The fish exceeded my expectations (just got it yesterday)! Yes it isn't finished on the back side but it is a side mount fish. What else do you hang on your wall that is finished on both sides? Look on the back of your pictures...Shipping was a little much but if you ever shipped anything via UPS in a large box it cost a lot. Thinking that a 55"x24"x10" box is going to be inexpensive to ship, think again. I highly recommend both the Foxsea and Gray Taxidermy. Love my 50" Barracuda and will do business with both in the future!

I have to say that when I received my trophy fish I was amazed. It looked so freaking good. I decided to let Gray Taxidermy make a replica of a wahoo I caught down in Florida and it came out beautifull. Ths shipping coat was a bit high but well worth it. The crate it came in was built very sturdy. I guess thats where the cost comes in.

I would definietly use this company again. Maybe try to pick up my fish myself though. Would they allow a fishmount as a carry on on a plane :-)

Everyone who has reviewed this company and given them more than 1 star is a shill.

They are rip-off artists and cannot be trusted. On the boat, they will say ANYTHING to get the sale, promising that shipping is included, that the amount on the invoice is the final amount. It is all lies.

Once you pay the deposit, you get an invoice that will DOUBLE or TRIPLE the amount you were told it would cost.

It took me 3 months to get my deposit back (thankfully I paid via credit card and could do a chargeback).

DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY. I hope my warning can save others from the three months of hell I went through.

So thrilled, I went by Gray Taxidermy to see how my fish mount was coming along. It had just been painted... Wow it looks awesome and I cant wait to get it home so I can stop bragging about my catch and instead people can see it for themselves.

When we got our fish trophy my husband was amazed. Never did we know that a replica fish can look so authentic. I bought it as a surprise for my husband. I only had a picture of the fish, (a Mahi-mahi) he caught, but every detail from the photo was captured. Now I only hope my husband can surprise me with a gift :-)

My experience with Gray Taxidermy was positive. The only thing I can imagine that some users have problems with is the time to receive your fish-mount. However, it is important to know that the process of making a taxidermy fishmount is not so simple as you may think.

There are several steps involved and these handcrafted pieces of art are carefully made and inspected several times for quality etc. So there will be some time before you get yours. They are not some mass produced factory made products, far from it.

I would highly recommend this company to anyone.

I recently hired Gray Taxidermy to produce my fishmount of my bull dolphin that I caught on a trip out of Miami.

I have read some of the negative reviews here and on other sites, and I have to say that my experience is nothing but excellent. The company has great customer service and the quality of work is great and my trophy looks like a piece of art.

Yes it may take a while for you get your trophy fish, but it is well worth it and great work takes time. I rather wait for something good than something less that you pay for. I will definitely use Gray again... if I catch a fish again that is :-)

I must say that the service and foremost quality of the product provided was excellent. I recently used Gray Taxidermy to produce my fishmount of a sailfish that I caught in Mexico. The detail and texture of the mount is just like the real fish.

I WILL use them Gray's again... I just need t catch a fish first.

This company is a rip off! I was lied to by one of their representatives in Mexico when I caught a 94" marlin. The Gray's representative made up a long story about how they used the actual fish for the mount. This is a total lie - it is all fiberglass and none of the actual fish is used. They simply take your money and their representatives lie. The charges appear after the fact and amount to multiples of what you are quoted on the boat. They try to wrap themselves up behind their iron clad contracts, but they are really just taking advantage of people. I tried to reason with them about refunding my deposit given the lies I was told on the boat and they refused to do so. Do not trust these people - they are crooks!!!

Vacationer in Florida; chartered a boat; caught a fish; Captain recommended Gray's. DO NOT DO IT!! Captain stated "have to know if you want it mounted now because we have to get this fish on ice." I asked costs and he stated about $600 with half down for deposit. Back at dock, needed $400 deposit. Gray's sent invoice several weeks later with crate charge of $160 (mind you this is for a cardboard box) - could cancel order but wouldn't get deposit back; guess who gets deposit? Yes, Captain. Then shipping charges down the road of over $100. Fish has one eye and back is not painted or even sanded; poor quality. Please contact Florida Attorney Generals Office if you have complaints against this organization.

Agree with those who rip this business. Extremely unethical. Same problems as some others. Took my boys fishing at Hilton Head Island. Son caught a 41 inch dusky shark, didn't want to get mounted but captain pushed me to do it then suggested Gray's. Given an order form without prices (caveat emptor) but was told a fish that size "only around 300.00" so ordered. Well, first invoice 600.00! Knew there was a crating charge but it came later after paying the 600 - 144.00! Paid this, (can't continue work until paid). Then told had ANOTHER balance due for shipping - 198.00! Now around 1000.00 for a small shark! A rip-off, dishonest dealings and clearly in cahoots with the captain. Totally mischaracterized. Bookmarked a page for a 42 inch bull shark- 420.00 with shipping 49.95! Run away from Gray taxidermy scam.

I recently caught a Sailfish while out on my first deep sea fishing trip. The captain referred me to Gray Taxidermy for a replica of my fish. I checked out their website www.graytaxidermy.com and was so impressed with the process and the final result. I placed the order and recieved some information in the mail within the next few days. I noticed that the invoice included a crating charge and stated frieght charges are pending. So I called to inquire about the freight charges to Michigan. The office worker was very nice and helpful. She explained how they crate the trophy in order to prevent any damage during delivery. She was able to give me an estimated freight rate and I admit it seemed kinda high. So I asked if I could arrange my own shipping and she said of course. So I called around and got a few quotes and the rate that Gray Taxidermy gave me beat all of those quotes by far. I am assuming they must ship a lot and they must get a discount. So I called the nice lady back and told her I would pay the freight up front. She explained the whole process and told me that the shipment is 100% insured. I just recently recieved my Sailfish and I couldn't be happier. They did such a great job. My wife even let me hang it in the family room. She is so impressed with the artistic touch! I highly recommend this company. With any purchase you make, be sure to read the contracts and invoices and you won't feel so cheated. This company had everything written out on the contract and invoice, so there was no guessing games!

My wife even let me hang it in the family room. She is so impressed with the artistic touch! I highly recommend this company. With any purchase you make, be sure to read the contracts and invoices and you won't feel so cheated. This company had everything written out on the contract and invoice, so there was no guessing games!

We were very excited to catch a 9 foot sailfish in Mexico, but that excitement quickly faded when having to deal with Gray Taxidermy. They were very rude, the actual cost ended up being three times higher than originally quoted. On top that I paid a very large invoice and told it was paid in full only to get another invoice for over $400.00. The entire thing has been very frustrating, and I regret taking the fish out of the water. When I wanted to share my frustrations with someone in customer service, I was told I could not speak to them, and was givien an e-mail address. If you can avoid using them I would higly recommend it.

I actually got to go on my first big fishing trip. It was AWESOME. I hooked a dolphin. It wasn't the biggest, but yeah, I was proud.
I wanted to get a mount of it. The captain I was with suggested I mount it with Gray Taxidermy. It would go perfect outside near my pool.
Enter Gray Taxidermy. I actually went to the building, and I must say, what a group of people. Really nice, especially the lady that gave me directions there haha. What's great about Gray Taxidermy, is that all I had to do was bring in the photos I took and the measurements. They were able to go in to their stock of premade molds, and they were able to replicate my dolphin that way. SO AWESOME. When I got my fish, I was really happy with the results. It was beautiful. It's out in the pool area right now.
They made the experience fun with their fishy luvin' selves. They did a great job, and when I catch another, I will get it mounted and put it right next to my dolphin.

We had a fish mounted with gray taxidermy last year and found them to be nothing but professional! We received our trophy in a timely manner and it looked awesome!! When you are in business that long and have as many customers as they do your bound to have an unhappy one. Going fishing in June and hope to call Gray with our next trophy!!!

We caught a Sailfish off Pompano Beach in February 2009, the fishing charter we had we great (ULTIMATE SPORT FISHING) and we decided to have it mounted. The boat recommended Grays. Well we did the paper work, $1288. plus "UP TO 26% for crating" The below it states:" SHIPPING, CRATING, OR DELIVERIES NOT INCLUDED IN MOUNTING PRICE" Okay, so "up to 26% to get it delivered" A little high, but we dealt with it as we are in MAINE. NOT SO. A week into they send you a letter, they need MORE money for the CRATE...in our case $309.12 before they will do any more work. So I pay. PLUS I added the rush for the mount..Which was optional...of $146.00...so I'm in it for $1743.12, then TODAY they call, they want SHIPPING CHARGES before they will go any further....ANOTHER $430.09!! Okay, the mount is costing us $2173.21 and we don't even have it yet, GUARANTEED they will suck us for more...what a SERVICE CHARGE? A HANDLING FEE? A DELIVERY CHARGE? How about a SUCKER CHARGE? RUN AWAY RUN RUN RUN!!! THEY ARE NOT ETHICAL!!!
