Review for Stone Specialties

A disaster of unimaginable proportions! In September of 2013 We embarked on a complete remodel of our kitchen. New floor, new cabinets, everything the last element to finish the job was the countertops We had one type of stone for the perimeter counters and another for the center island. The perimeter came in and the installers butchered the install so badly that they had to remove what they installed. My husband literally escorted them off the premises. Stone Specialties sent another installer who not only showed up with a drunk assistant he also did not bother to remove the old glue so when he did the install a portion of the counter would not sit flush against the wall. Then the center island stone arrived. They cut it and tried to install it but the blue stone had a nickel sized white spot. I couldn't help but wonder "did anyone even bother to look at this?". So they had to order another piece of stone. More waiting. Let me explain the center island. It consists of 5 pieces. 3 on the top and two "waterfall pieces" that wrap from the counter to the floor. When the new stone came in they recut the center top piece that had the spot but used the side top pieces from the first stone. The colors were noticeably shades different. More waiting. The owner of the company promised to recut the side top pieces from the same stone as the center, but it took them a week to realize that they did not have enough stone left to do so. The next batch of this particular stone would not be available until March of 2014. So we picked out a different type of stone. They came to install the new stone but had not recut the waterfall pieces. It all has to be installed at the same time. Again the installer showed up with a stoned assistant. We asked them to send a different installer. Finally the new installer shows up with all the pieces but no one at the shop had bothered to lay them all out to see if they fit together properly. Surprise, surprise (not really) they did not fit. Back to the shop it all went. In the meantime while all of this was happening, Thanksgiving and Christmas came and went. We hosted our families (between 12 and 17 people at each meal) without a sink, dishwasher or garbage disposal. ( the countertops had to be installed before these elements could be connected). We had given Stone Specialties the first check in August. After the new year they finally managed to get it all installed. All in all this company was singlehandedly responsible for a 3 month delay in the completion of our kitchen. It was a nightmare.

I wasn't too impressed with the customer service side of Stone Specialties (which is all I am really qualified to review). I had first called them to get a price quote for replacement granite in our ktichen in the fall of 2012. One of the owners came by and said he would look around at other wholesalers and try to find a match to our existing granite. He left with a good-sized sample of our granite to color match. I never heard back from him. I called the store and the receptionist ended up getting back to me and giving me the name and number of a wholesaler in Tampa which the owner said had a similar granite. Before trekking down there I called and it turns out they did not have the same thickness granite I was looking for. I called Stone Specialties again, explained the situation, and again the secretary took a few days but got back to me with the name and address of another wholesaler in the Ybor area. I called to verify they had my color granite and thickness. I drove down there with my sample and the owner and I immediately shook our heads. Their peacock granite was not even close to being a match to mine. So I felt I wasted my time thinking the owner had recommended only those wholesalers he had personally visited with my sample. He didn't do me any better than I could have done on my own. So I went with another granite installer who actually did the leg work to find me a very good, close match to my existing granite. They got the job.
Several months later I went BACK to Stone Specialties to order a new toe kick (they are very close to my house, so I thought I would give them another try). I was told to bring in the door of one of our kitchen cabinets to get an accurate color and grain pattern. I did so, and the receptionist helped me out. She picked a match she felt was a good fit. I remember feeling skeptical about her choice, but she was so sure of herself and none of the other samples looked good either. It came in, I took it home, and it was truly not a very good match to the existing cabinets or neighboring toe kick. I wasn't being picky in this situation - I just wanted it installed and to be done with it, but it truly looked so out of place. I took good pictures to email them and asked them what they thought, and never heard back. I called and they said to come back in again. The owner said he would personally be there if I got there within the next hour. Well, I get there 15 minutes later and he was out, not expected to return anytime soon. I kind of wonder if he didn't want to deal with me. I returned the bad toe kick and was told I couldn't get a refund. I didn't want to deal with the receptionist lady again. I went home and was told by email that the match I had gotten really wasn't so bad, but they could still work with me if I wanted. I decided to just stop dealing with them. Again, not very impressed with the owners' customer service and felt they didn't really want to deal with me, even though I was a very polite dissatisfied customer (I wonder if my husband would've had a better response) . If they had actually done an install for me, I have doubts about how responsive they would be to any potential problems brought to their attention.

I couldn't be happier with my new kitchen countertops & backsplash and with everyone I encountered at Stone Specialties. What a great experience, with kind yet professional people, starting with Travis, a truly nice and honest salesperson, who is a pleasure to deal with. Once I chose my slab, Ina called me within a few hours to set everything up and then called before each stage to confirm what was originally scheduled. Template was done a few days later by Gary who really knows what he's doing, and who helped me with some great suggestions to get the best look possible. It's now a week later, Carlos and Lester were here first thing this morning, removed all the old countertops and did a wonderful job installing the new ones. My kitchen looks like a million dollars and I absolutely love it.
Not only will I call Stone Specialties again when I re-do the bathrooms, but I will most certainly recommend them to anyone who will listen.
Thank you for a job well done at a great price, because on top of everything they beat all the other quotes I received.

I don't normally write bad reviews. I prefer to leave the flaming to others. However, since I relied upon the ratings on this website as a factor in selecting Stone Specialties over its competitors, I thought it was fair to provide our own rating.

The lead up to installation had its problems. Their saw machine had broken and getting an answer about an installation date was a function of who you talked to at the company. Installation took from 11:30 to 6: 30 with no installer breaks. I think the installers just wanted to get out of there. After the dust settled, and we had a chance to look at the installation, we noticed that the seams were poorly done and that the granite colors did not match from piece to piece.

A neighbor stopped by the next day and without prompting noted that the seams were poor.

The salesperson visited and agreed that the seams were poor and made some rather strong commitments to fix the installation. It took a week after inspection to hear back from Stone Specialties. As a matter of fact, Stone Specialties never did return that set of phone calls- one day, the installers called and said they were on the way. In spite of a commitment from Stone Specialties to send out his fix-it specialists, Stone Specialties sent the original installers back out- they did what they could, but it is still a poor installation.

As for the color differences, we did specify in the contract that we wanted to see and select the slabs before cutting. The first visit, we rejected the slabs. A few days later, Stone Specialties got in some more stone. We looked at one slab, which was exactly what we wanted. The salesperson said the other two, which we could not see because they were laid against each other were "just like the first one". When I expressed my doubts since we could not see the finished faces, he assured me, that he would personally see that the stones matched before cutting. I believed him, he didn??t and they don??t.

My advice to prospective Stone Specialties customers:

Look at each and every stone slab fully before agreeing to use the slab. Make Stone Specialties move the slabs so you can see the finished side of both slabs side by side and have them mark your slabs in your presence.

Do NOT, as we did, give Stone Specialties 50% down. You lose any leverage and what going concern needs 50% up front. I only agreed to that because this site and the BBB had good things to say about Stone Specialties.

In summary, I hate having to say bad things about a company, but this review site needs some balance, unless I am the only person in Stone Specialties history that has ever had this level of service and product and I doubt that. I am like the vast majority of other consumers. I would rather have a quality installation that I and the vendor could point to with pride than

to have a reason to write bad reviews on websites.

I shopped around quite a bit before finding Travis at Stone Specialties. It was just such a pleasure to get the personalized service that I was looking for. We had our kitchen counter done with granite, and I'm still amazed at how beautiful it came out. Travis was such a great help, and every step of the way the process and installation went just as he promised. It is just so rare to find such service these days, and I have, and will always continue to recommend Stone Specialties to my friends.

This letter is to thank you and your staff regarding our process of purchasing and installing a granite countertop. Travis is a great public relations representative, making out first impression of Stone Specialties a good one. He was patient and seemed to answer our questions even before we asked. After choosing the Juparana, you came to our home, and like an artist, made the template that I didn??t understand how anyone could possible read. Then, Ron spent as much time as we needed in choosing where we wanted the template placed on the stone. Fernando and Gary were the installers and the work continued just as professional as our first visit to your store. They were extremely meticulous and left not only the countertop clean and shining, but swept the floor and cleaned the entire work area before they left. Jerry installed the new sink and, unfortunately, it was more work than he anticipated, but he never seemed put out about it. Josh came later to finish the wood trim and painting. Because of a gap between the cabinets and the new countertop (caused from the original builders), Josh did not have the necessary boards for the trim. Although we told him there was no rush, he insisted on returning Saturday morning to complete the job, While everyone worked professionally, you all gave us personal treatment as if we were your only customers. Please convey our appreciation to your crew.
Finally ??OH MY GOD? As scared as I was to make such a change and investment, when I didn??t feel it was necessary, I can??t believe how happy I am with the new countertop. Pete said it looks so perfect that its like it??s always been there. But every time we look at it (which is a lot!), we see something new. Of all the granite countertops I've seen, ours is by far the prettiest. Everyone who has seen it has been very impressed by its uniqueness and the quality of work. I realize you think you??ve seen all stone, but if you want to see the best, we invite you back to see out

Thanks again to all of you

We hired this company to do the granite in our new home. The owner is very nice and easy to work with. All of the installers were very pleasant also. When they brought it out to install, the piece that had the cutout for our kitchen sink was not exactly the right shape due to there being no template provided from where we bought it. ( Not their fault) They took it back to their shop and made it correct and then brought it back again. They went overboard to make the job perfect. Everything is great.
