An approximate $500 bill from Space Coast Marine for parts and labor included a charge for pressure testing the lower unit of the 40 HP Yamaha outboard installed on my small boat and refilling the unit with fresh gear lube. The boat then sat on its trailer for 4 months while repairs were being made to my dock (engine was run about every 2-3 weeks for several minutes for obvious reasons)...during this time there was no evidence of oil leakage from the lower unit or anywhere else.

Prior to putting the boat in the water, I decided to check the lower unit oil level...no oil was found - the lower unit was "bone dry." Suspecting that all was OK except Space Coast just forgot to top-off the oil after draining, I filled the lower unit with oil, put the boat in the water and cruised for about 30 minutes to get to my dock and then hauled the boat out of the water. After sitting for one week, I rechecked the oil...again, "bone dry."

When I called Space Coast to discuss this situation, they were, at first, hesitant but not unfriendly, but when we got to the bottom line, I was told that "if it's shown on the bill, it was done [exactly as stated...there is no chance of a mistake or error having been made]." I was told that "I'm a business man [and don't do work for free]." A good point but this business also apparently doesn't focus on customer satisfaction.

Space Coast offered to repeat the pressure test but any subsequent work or repair would be done at full charge with no consideration of the previous (somewhat suspect) service work. Clearly, the 4-month period between the initial work and the first "float test" makes my case difficult to pursue. HOWEVER, my goal here is help others avoid the experience that I had at Space Coast Marine. Ask around before you commit to any significant work on your boat and/or motor. If you ask me, my response is "stay away from Space Coast Marine."
