Some people seem to have the wrong idea about the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. The medical center offers low cost services for pets and has a fantastic program for feral cats, in which you can get feral cats fixed for $20. The shelter even gives needy families free food and brings in animals from other areas to adopt them out when they have room. Thats why they usually have younger animals available for adoption. And with so many animals being killed in shelters, you should always adopt and save a life, instead of going to a pet store.

HOWEVER- the Humane Society of Tampa Bay is most certainly NOT a NO KILL shelter! I've volunteered there and found that plenty of animals leave that place in a garbage bag- they are waaay too kill-friendly for my taste. Yes, you can surrender your animals here if absolutely necessary, but don't kid yourself (or other people) they KILL many animals and if they don't have enough room for more, they turn them away. If you drop off a stray, theres no guarantee it will make it to the adoption floor. And employees are pretty much told by management to reject people trying to surrender pit bulls. Wonder where those animals end up? Yeah, so do I.

One situation in particular made me walk away from this place and never look back- two girls that worked in the intake building (I dont know their names, but one looked like a Mexican troll with no neck and the other one was about 300lbs) were the most rude and condescending people Ive ever met. They were explaining to a man dropping off two little, adorable, friendly kittens why they were going to humanely euthanize thembecause they had colds and there was no room in the sick cat room. Really?! Thats unbelievable! A week worth of meds and they would be as good as new. You dont have room for them, so youre going to kill them?! Thats the exact definition of killing for space. Find a foster for them or transfer them to the medical center, temporary arrangements could have been made! This place is far from no kill. Dont let the title humane society throw you. Unless it was just those two girls acting on their own volition, in which case they should be fired and never be allowed to work with animals again! If its company policy to kill everything that gets a cold, nothing would walk out of that building alive. For the animals sake, I hope AT LEAST those two girls are gone! But I wouldnt know, I havent been back, I volunteer with rescue groups that actually save animals now.

It is such a shame to see this place go down the tubes like this, they have some really good programs, its just too bad its run by monsters. They need to euthanize their entire animal-hating staff (from the directors calling the shots, to the techs injecting the death juice, to the vets aborting entire litters of puppies and kittens) and replace them with people who actually care about the welfare of animals- then MAYBE they can get back to (what I hope was) their original mission of helping animals.

Do not bother to come here without an appointment. You will wait for hours and watch the entire waiting room turnover and be talked to like a child for not making an appointment when you ask why you've had to wait 2 hours and then told it

I think the ladies at the 4039 Gunn Hwy location are amazing! They took tiny, flea and worm ridden, weened way too early kittens and turned them into the best kittens possible. I know in my heart without them my little Iggi would be dead instead of the most spoiled kitten ever. I appreciate all their time and effort. If you have room for a cat or kitten this is the place to go! They also do low cost vaccinations and help keep cats in their homes with a free food bank.

Better than a pet shot, tampa's humane society had some gerbils that we got a few months ago for our 5 year old. The humane society is very nice and the staff there are always friendly. My wife is planning on buying a dog from the society sometime soon. I dont see what to object to... the store is well kept and clean (does not smell much).

We adopted our 5 month old male kitten from here. The staff really welcomes you and helps you find a pet who is just right for you. I will admitt, it was very hard to choose only one.

I adopted a german shepard mix eight years ago from this shelter, and she brought me nothing but joy and happiness for those years. The shelter was professional, caring, thorough in interviewing me to make sure that I would provide a good home for the dog. I wished more people would adopt shelter dogs rather than buying from breeders.

PROS: Clean, professional, caring
CONS:

Terrific site for information, especially for kids. Would add a good deal more pictures of animals of all types assisted by this organization, including horses and other non-tradtional pets or domesticated animals.
