My 16 yr. Old daughter found 2 dogs last night. It was storming & they were near a busy road. So she brought them home. She went door to door looking for the owner, stayed up all night printing & posting flyers & posted pics on FB , all to no avail. First thing this A.M, she called every shelter in the book and went to CCSAS because they wouldn't answer their phone. She was treated with rude, unprofessional & threatening service. She came home in tears! First they said they were full. Then they said the dogs would be uthanized if they did take them. Then they said to come back tomorrow!? Then they told her if she dumped them in their parking lot (she had NO such intention) they would have her arrested! Luckily ( with no help from CCSAS) She DID find the the very happy, relieved, owner!:} We will NEVER go back there! They probably go through alot of volunteers due to their hateful staff. It's a non-profit because they'd be hard pressed to earn one! Shame on them for ruining what could have been a great experience for my kid (& probably many others,)

I adopted my dog from them back in April 2011. Staff was kind, concerned and thorough - as they should be with any new pet parent! The shelter manager is new - for those who are complaining about staff who no longer exist. Sadly many comments below are from people who do not remotely understand the policies of ANY shelter. If you want a pet from someone who could care less about the safety of your home, your lifestyle, the hours you work, or your financial status, then buy one off of Craig's List! Ultimately it would be better to educate yourself before you post negative rants. Yes, you must meet certain requirements and you must pay the adoption fee. If you don't meet the requirements, let it go. Don't get ticked off because the rules can't be bent for you. Besides, these rules are in place for good reason. The last thing any shelter wants is for you to return your animal (now an untrained, undesirable adult) to them because you didn't spend time on proper training, you can't afford proper health care or worse... their novelty just wore off. Pets are not toys and adopting a pet should not be taken lightly. Look inside yourself and ask if you can make this big commitment. Lastly - stop complaining and do something like volunteer. Safe Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter mostly run by volunteers and the generocity of the community.

when I read these negative statements made by these people who SAY that they have the best intentions for animals as they say such negative things about this shelter I think, "if you really cared about the puppies * why surrender them?"--"if you really wanted to save a dog & thought the shelter was so awful-why say * you will never go back*-STUPID! GO back! Save an animal-see if you can help FILL THE WATER BOWLS! Do something besides complain! I rescue and it is tough! I am not sure if things are perfect there or not but I do believe the statement, " BE THE CHANGE YOU HOPE TO SEE IN THE WORLD!" Now, go see if you can help the shelter you complained about SAVE SOME LIVES!

Staff and volunteers were very caring. The only reason people write bad reviews is that they were denied an adoption for good reasons. Animals need loving, forever homes. Thank you.

I had a stray German Shepherd that ended up coming to my house & havin 4 puppies in my yard. The mother of the pups didnt have enough milk to feed the pups, so I had to take the pups & hand feed them myself. When they were 9 weeks old I was able to give 2 of them to good homes. I still had 2 left so I called the Safe Animal Shelter about 2 weeks before Christmas to talk to a staff member about letting me bring in the 2 puppies so that they could have a chance on getting adopted. The staff member told me that they didnt have any room @ that time for the pups & told me that she had 3 pups that were getting adopted that week & if I could keep the pups for about 1 more week then she "promised" that she could take the pups in & adopt them to good homes. The staff member got my info & "promised" to call me when I could bring the pups in. Well ofcourse she NEVER called me back!! I called the shelter back about 3 weeks later & nobody would talk to me or give me the time or day. I left messages & emails & nobody ever responded. My grandma finally went up there in person & talked to a staff member. My grandma told her that the mother dog was full blooded shepherd & the lady said that she was a shepherd lover & she would be more then happy to take the pups in! My grandma took the pups in the next day & she told my grandma that they would take the mother of the pups & 1 pup, not both pups! She was VERY rude/mean to my grandma because my grandma kept the mother dog as her own pet. I guess the staff member wanted the mother dog for herself & due to her being mad that she didnt get the dog she didnt want to take the puppies in the shelter. My grandma ended up staying there & talking to somebody else that decided to take the pups in for adoption. My grandma & me should have NEVER had to go through all that crap!!! The staff there is VERY VERY RUDE/MEAN!!!!!!!!

What a great experience! I was really surprised to read through some of these reviews because my experience was so positive. I have three young children (ages 1,4 & 7) and two cats at the house. We were looking for a medium/large dog that would make a good fit into our family. Rather than picking out the cutest dog and saying "I want that one!" I thought it would be good to get the staffs opinions because they are more familiar with their personalities. That turned out to be the best idea. She brought out dogs I had not innitially looked at but were an awsome fit for us. The next week I came back in with the application for the one we wanted they looked it over and told me I could take her that day. We were so excited! They even worked with our existing vet in order to do her heartworm treatment there. I could not have asked for a better experience. You can tell they truly care about the animals there.

We were very excited to find a beautiful puppy that we fell in love with instantly at the shelter. We were allowed the opportunity to visit inside and take the puppy out to play. Two of our three children accompanied us to meet the cutie. We applied for the pet expecting the good news in approx 2 days. We were shocked and disappointed to be told 2 days later, the adoption was not approved. They told us we worked too much (I work 7-3 mon-fri) (my husband 9-530). They also said because we have a 3 yo, they cant adopt to fams with kids 3 or under. They dont want the dog in a cage during the day.....funny that it's in the cage right now at the shelter!!!!!! They even used against us that we had given a dog away in the past, which we were heartbroken but with a new baby and an afternoon shift at the time, we figured giving the dog to a home with a stay at home mom and a brother dog was the best for the dog!!!
It makes me sad for the pets in there because they have opportunuties for homes that are being selectively blocked. I suppose it would be better if I didn't work but then we couldn't afford to take it to the vet for treatment so we'd probably be denied!! I work as a registered nurse and my husband has been a police officer for 13 years. We can raise three children and protect and medically treat the public but we can't adopt this poor puppy! Sad! We happily adopted a puppy from the Clay county Shelter yesterday and she is one lucky girl, the kids are gaga for her, we already love her!!! Sorry little Sadie (Freckles) we would've been a good match. Hope a family that is suitable for them finds you!!

During our current economic times an animal shelter is a good thing. With so many people having to surrender their pets. However the volunteers are very rude, do not know the policies, seen no water dish in the crate and when a stray mixed dog comes in they guess at the breed.I have seen this happen. They have vets they work with why not ask them what kind of breed the dog might be. They do not answer their e-mails. If you do get a reply your question it is never answered and then when you email back for your answer you never get it. Should you be approved to adopt be sure you know the policies. Because when questioned in an email the Center director would not answer me. Also when talking to the staff be sure what you say is off the record. Because it could be repeated in an e-mail answer, this happened to me.

I also experienced a very rude staff member at Safe Animal Shelter, which will cause me never to return there. My husband and I visited the shelter in the hopes of 'replacing' our beloved dog which had just passed away. We also wanted company for our existing dog. We found what we felt was the perfect pet, and took him home as a foster pet for the week. Although he was very lovable, he proved to be very distructive in our home, so we returned him after a week. The staff member taking him back would hardly look at us and barely spoke. She said that we would have to speak with the director, so we waited in the office area. After a few minutes of being totally ignored, we asked if that was 'it'. She didn't even look up from her desk; but just said 'that's it'. We would have loved to have given a home to another dog, but because of this staff member, we are looking at different shelters.

My wife took my 2 boys (11 & 13) to adopt a couple of cats. After both boys found cats that they immediately fell in love with, my wife was told to fill out the application. She was a little upset that she couldn't just get the cats that day, like other shelters. So, after filling out the paperwork, we waited only to discover that we had been turned down for adoption, (because the lady who spoke with my wife "Didn't have a good feeling about letting us adopt"). I went back 2 days later with my boys and we asked to see the cats. The same lady stated, ("Oh, I remember you boys. You were already turned down because of your mother.") She didn't even give me a chance to talk to her. I asked to speak with the center director and was told to wait. After 15 minutes of waiting, they told me the director was too busy. I just couldn't believe the rudeness and unprofessionalism of the workers. I would never recommend them to anyone even wanting to adopt a rat!! By the way, we went to the Humane Society and we now have 2 wonderful cats that are filling our house with joy!

I am very sad about being denied an adoption only because I must keep the dog outside. My children and I are grieving at this time. We fell in love with a dog on the website and once we went to the shelter were madly in love. I completed the paperwork that day. Three days passed and I went back to walk the dog and sit with her because I hated seeing her in the small kennel. Then I asked how my paper work was going and was told denied because they require the dog be in the house. Dogs love the outdoors more than the indoors people! I'm now in the anger stage of my grief.
Is this required of all dog shelters!? Maybe that is why there is so many animals...good bye dear roxanne, we love you and will always remember you in our hearts.
May God send another loving family to your rescue.

I got my cat from the Safe Shelter and athough my cat is fine, I just have several reasons to believe that this business is understaffed. The shelter does great work, they take in pretty much EVERY animal, and will not uthanize, with I find to be admirable with all the humane shelters who have to do this to make room for more animals. That being said, there are ALOT of animals there and it is a small place. If I could have adopted multiple cats there I would have. Due to the small spaces, these cats get sick often and catch what other cats have. They are a bit unorganized on the Saturday I went, and I am sure this is true of most Saturdays because that is when most people can come in. My cat had a respiratory infection that I didn't realize until I had him home with me for a couple days.
There prices are pretty cheap, for a 55 dollar adoption fee that includes the neutering, so at least they are not asking an arm and a leg in adoption fees.
They also take all kinds of donations because they are always needing something for their animals. They are not more profit.

PROS: Variety
CONS: Short staffed, too many animals. Adopt, people!
