Bought a Surly LHT from these guys back in 2009 and got royally screwed on the price. Paid fair price for basic bike but WAY too much for add-ons and labor. At the time didn't know much about touring bikes and depended on them. They definitely took advantage of this fact.

Also refused to answer emails regarding the bike once I took it out of state, even though it was still under their warranty. Called them twice and they were rude over the telephone (Duncan). It was obvious by their attitude they considered me some sort of shop joke. Didn't contact them any more after that.

Also noticed that many of the individual components on the bike didn't match the specs per Surly's web site and were cheaper components. Three years later I stripped the bike of all components and rebuilt it from the frame up with higher quality parts. Despite buying more expensive parts and having to pay retail for them I did this at a cost LOWER than what I originally paid Chain Reaction for the stock factory bike.

All in all these guys took advantage of a bicycle novice in regards to labor and after market component prices and took an attitude of "outta sight, outta mind" once I took the bike out of Gainesville. I also experienced a definite elitist attitude because I was a novice.

If you feel you simply must buy a bicycle from these opportunistic jerks, I would advise everyone to really keep an eye on part and labor prices. They definitely pad them and I highly suspect they stripped more expensive parts off my bike and replaced them with cheaper components that weren't Surly approved. I also noticed Surly has removed them from their list of approved Surly resellers since I purchased from them.

My bike is my only form of transportation and it is very important to me to have it repaired in a timely manner. This shop has consistently taken way too much time to turn around my bike whenever I leave it for a tune-up or a repair. When they do their job they are good but I always run into some issue in getting my bike back in time. I took my bike in to repair the stem and they broke the screw that holds it in which ruined the entire stem and blamed it on the parts and charged me money to have a new stem put in. I have left my bike and had it's presta tire adapter missing. I left it for a tuneup from Friday through the entire weekend and when I went back nothing had been done to the bike because no one put a ticket on it. I just recently left it to get a full bike rejuvenation on Wednesday and come back on Friday to find out only a simple tuneup was done to it so I have to wait again to have the job actually finished. Every time I have to take the bus or get a ride from someone to get there so when I have to wait it adds a whole deal of hassle because I can't simply drive home. A big issue I have with them is that the owner will pressure you into making expensive purchases and will consistently overcharge you for anything. I was charged $5 for a screw for my pedal. I was charged $15 for a tire one day then $30 for the same tire the next day. Like other people have said they will ignore you consistently when you walk in. It took me 20 minutes to simply drop my bike off for a tuneup and repair because it would take them forever to get to me to fill out the forms and contact info and to discuss a price. If you are in a rush do not come here as it will frustrate you. Overall I used to liked this shop because it is close by and when they actually complete the work it is great but this hassle, headache, and great expensive really makes me want to look towards going somewhere else. Even though I have used this bike shop for 3 years and I have hoped that things would get better but there are plenty of other bike stores in Gainesville and I will be sure to shop somewhere else or do my repairs on my own like another reviewer said.

Stay as far away from this shop as you can. They don't treat their customers with courtesy or respect. I went in for a ten dollar adjustment and left with an $80 bill for replacing parts that the shop lost. In addition to the questionable ethics, the owner is pushy and aggressive when trying to make a sale. An overall terrible experience.

Chain Reaction is awful. I recently took my bicycle in for repair. They required 4 days longer than they promised to fix my bike. When they returned my bike it was filthy, covered with oil and grease and scratched with deep mechanical scars. Then to top off already extremely bad service and workmanship, they tacked another 30% onto my bill as a result of ??ancillary, unforeseen repairs.? Chain Reaction doesn??t deliver as promised, does shoddy work and then overcharges customers. I recommend staying as far away from these guys as possible.

Good bikes, good service, good people.

I used to ride a very old bike. When I went to this bike shop for some repairs, everything on my bike started to fall apart. The guys and I didn??t realize how much work this bike needed. It took them hours of labor and 30 years of experience to fix my strange, old bike. They gave me a temporary bike for a day while they worked on mine. In the end the repairs became too high for me to bother with, and I decided to buy a new one from them. They gave me a discount on a new bike and included a discount equal to the cost of repairing my old bike. They were patient with me, and they didn??t try to cheat me.

Now I have an awesome bike and free maintenance for life at their shop.

The shop has a lot of nice gear, but I was not pleased with the repair work I had done there. I went to get a left shifter put on the bike, which was nonexistent, but they replaced the working right shifter instead. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the mistake until after I had paid. The owners wouldn't give me a refund, but offered to put the left shifter on for a discounted rate. In short, if you can afford their prices they have some nice stuff, but their customer service isn't the best.

If you are getting maintenance done then this place is well-trained to do the job but if you're looking to purchase a bike, beware! The owners here are very sneaky and the prices of the bikes are ridiculous. They have no return policy visibly posted inside except on the bottom of the receipt which states "Returns must be accompanied by a receipt". I tried returning a rarely used bike (purchased from CR) 14 days later. The owners wouldn't accept them because it is has been over 3 days since the purchase date. Arguing with them does no good. I do NOT recommend CR.

It is close to campus and easy to find. They both sell and repair bikes. The products there have good quality. It is free to diagnose the problem of your bike. The service is good. However, the price is a kind of high. Especially for students, the price will scare them away. Most of them would choose the repair service provided by UF SG.
