We love The Boys. We started going there when it was under tarps when we arrived in Delray circa 1991. We experience mostly good despite bizarre customer behavior, perhaps including ours. There is always a family member or two or three on duty at all times. We pray for better quality control. Most recent disappointment is non-Girls strawberries. We called Perry Young Produce in Dover FL to alert them that their strawberries are being put out for sale long past their prime. barcode No 3338320127 for example were not edible. Sorry. We will continue to critique until our beloved The Boys install improved or even world class quality control. They deserve that rep,. We deserve that result. Yay or nay?

I am a 78 year old 'snowbird' from England. I also find the majority of 'oldies' shopping at the Boys really bad mannered and rude - is this the norm. for Americans??? Also it is bedlam trying to park. Why do we go shopping there? you may ask - we like most of the things that they sell, so we try to go when it is not too busy.

I am a long time resident of Delray Beach, barely in my 50's, and a long-time shopper at The Boys. It took me only 2 visits to realize the right time for me to go is when the store first open (but not all the berries or breads or up yet) or just before it closes (when all the breads are sold out). For holidays, I shop 2 days before, because the day before is your worst nightmare. It's true, the shoppers for the most part (young and old) are incredibly rude - and God help you if you find yourself moving 'upstream' - you will be yelled at by another patron that you are going the wrong way (how dare you suddenly remember you want to go back two aisles to get some apples!). But, to the defense of the "old farts", it is true that as one ages, one loses ones social filters. This is part of the aging process and the changes the brain goes through. So, while the old rude folks make it an unpleasant experience, they really can't help it. There is no excuse for the young rude folks. Like many others, I grin and bear it (trying to keep a smile on my face the entire time) and run like hell to get through the maze as quickly (and safely) as possible. Oh! Another pointer. I NEVER turn into the first driveway, which leads you through the impossible maze of bad drivers who want to park as close to the front door as possible. Turning into the second driveway allows you to make a straight run to the back parking spaces with some ease (well, easier, at least). I find the prices are still the best around and the produce is consistently better than any place else (including Whole Foods, which charges about twice the price)...you can't get good grapes if the grape season has been bad, no matter where you shop; The Boys doesn't always carry the usual stuff - they don't buy it if they can't get decent quality. Nothing beats some of the great markets one can find in NYC. If that's what you're looking for, you won't find it anywhere in So. Fla.

In reading some of the reviews -- agree -- get what you want and get out!! -- however, it is not just the "old farts" as they are referred to that are so ignorant and rude -- the young and the idle rich are there as well -- the young rich -- all ages -- they are sometimes worse giving out respect -- do they know what please, thank you and excuse me mean in the Boca, Delray area??? I think not. Discusting --- BUT the staff is always pleasant - even though most do not speak English -- the ones who do are very helpful - the meat counter -- etc. --- it is the customers -- 99% OF THE THEM THAT SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEIR BEHAVIOR. --- The quality seems great -- look at Publix -- their quality has gone way down -- go to Whole Foods -- their quality is perfect and they love the customers -- of course the people are once again the problem -- AND IT IS NOT THE ELDERLY!! -- But here I am off to The Boys for my fruit --- taking a very deep breath ----------NJOY!!

We have shopped here for about 3 years and have noticed the quality steadily dropping and the prices steadily increasing until they are about par with Publix pricing as of Nov 2010. Last Sunday they had no Italian bread for the first time in years. They had the worst looking inedible corn I've seen ever. The broccli looked beaten up. The watermelons looked worse than Winn Dixie. What a shame as they used to be top notch. So I left my cart there and drove back to Miami, never to return.

I have never laughed so much as reading these truthful accounts from the reviewers. I lived in sofla for 10yrs. I am from the NE where the old farts hail from. However, I think their brains have shrunk from all the sunshine. It is true...you better go to the boys with a list, and good running shoes. Get what you need, follow the lines, and get the hell out. Or you might not come out alive! The rudness is incredible. The old farts do not know what end is up half the time. They do run you over. I would never dream of taking my kids there. The boys should count their lucky stars for the biz they generate....keep the freshness, quality, and prices status quo and you will continue with success. If it was not for the great quality, people like me included would need their heads examined. I mean really who would subject themselves to this way of shopping? I pray to God that if I am lucky to reach the age of dirt that I will maintain my charm, laid-back ways- live & let live. Oh...the boys should get valet parking for those that like their life. I usually park far away from the chaos. Yes as one blogger stated, it is very comical to see what goes on in the parking lot. They can't see for anything, and God help you if you get in the path of a looney driver. Yes the store rocks with quality that reminds me of the days back home....but go with armour, and a good sense of humor. You will need it to survive.

I had to laugh at these reviews. Most are spot on. The fact is - the seniors are bastards - so much so at times that it is, indeed, comical. I was practically out the door, had my son in one hand trying to manage him, trying to grab the groceries in the other - chaos. Some nasty old lady behind me says, "move or I'll hit you" to which I replied (i got used to this as a resident of NY), "if you do, I may have to hit you back in which case you might not get up." with a grin. The only thing these pushy folks respond to is to give it right back to them. She gave me a look and then sulked while I finished getting myself bundled up.
Anyway - this is the best place to buy produce and they've got a ton of great stuff. If you are a transplanted NYer - you'll love it. And across the street is the NY bagel company (or something like that) that has the best bagels in town.

What a Zoo. This place has the best Veggies in PB county also the worst people who shop there. Rude , obnoxious, senile, pushy loud, you get the drift. Best time to go is early in the morning and avoid the crowds. Watch out in the parking lot, they can't drive either

I love Boys! I go 3-4 times a month, but that's all I can handle. They have RAO's tomato sauce for $4.99 when it's $8.99 at publix. Organic milk is almost $1 a gallon cheaper. The produce is always fresh and their meats are well priced and excellent. Their fish is, okay. I drive to the Fish Peddler in Fort Lauderdale for all my fish. I've shopped at Boys when it's been quiet and quite pleasant. I've also shopped their when I felt lucky to get out alive. I usually shop with my two year old. I make sure I have a list and try not to dawdle, which is hard because there is so much to look at. Most everyone in the place is so old and so unaware! Most of them don't mean any harm, but are completely oblivious to everything going on around them. Some of them are VERY rude and come in with a chip on their shoulder. The people who work their are helpful and friendly. Many of them do not speak great English, but do their best. As for the post that mentioned the owners are not friendly, they have always been helpful and great to me. They definitely aren't running around the store passing out HUGS, but look who they are dealing with!! I've also seen the people who work their take quite a bit of abuse from shoppers. I once heard a woman telling someone behind the bakery counter, " to speak better english or go back to mexico".... other patrons were also offended and it turned into a shouting match. It's a tough crowd.

Falling into the younger shopper profile category, I insist
that the customers are not rude nor possessed of a sense of
entitlement; they're down to earth and no big hassle.
Produce is superb, prices comparable to those of Trader Joe's
(I'm from LA and miss the place lots) and the fish is fresh;
their sushi-grade tuna is almost 50% less expensive than that
offered at Whole Foods. Fresh meats picked have been top
quality.
Their specials are just that. Carts outside the store bear an
inventory as varied as jarred asparagus, roasted peppers,
sour ball candy tins, dry soup mix...all priced at 99 cents.
Their $1/bags of yesterday's produce are the bargain of the
store, as are the 99 cent-$1.99 cheeses indoors.
All of the service staff are pleasant and extremely efficient.
Totally agree with other blogger who says that the lines
move quickly, no matter the volume of customers in-house.
Single complaint is the piss poor attitude of the owners.
One, (the younger) parks himself near the mesclun salad
mix and doesn't ever initiate conversation, looks glum, needs
to use a razor on a regular basis and spiff up the look so
that he no longer resembles a hobo who accidentally got
lost in the market. The older brother rides shotgun by
the registers; again, no personality, no conversational
interchange between himself and the customers who pay
his overhead...both of them need to relax (while staying
vigilant) and engage their customers in playful conversation.
When I see their sourpusses, I feel unwelcome.
All in all, it's definitely worth the drive (I come from Miami
Beach, and drop by while visiting the folks in Delray) and
average yearly savings on top grocery items is easily
$2,000+!

I am going to shoot you straight... You may want to have a glass of wine (or 3) before you venture to this market. The seniors are rude and their sense of entitlement are on display in this store. I took a friend and when we rounded the line for the fresh veges he said, "I am about to enter hell." My wife litterally received bruises on her ankles because she was rammed with the shopping cart. It was so packed she couldn't get out of the way. I finally turned on the perpetrator and told them I didn't care how old he was, I would now allow him to keep pushing her. He did not care and continued at his next chance so I pushed his cart back at him. I was very comical at this point, but he finally got our point and squirmed away. He was much like the rest of the of the patrons.. rude and obnoxious.

The food and value is what will keep you going back. It is wonderful and so fresh. Try the orange juice. It is their specialty. Their cheese selection is surprising and so are their meats and premade meals.

The parking stinks... Keep your eyes open so you make it out alive. Although the fights that happen in the parking area provide much needed comic relief. It is like the Golden Girls vs Archie Bunker.

Just don't bring your children...

This is a very good market although as of 2010 the prices have started to go up significantly and some of the quality is slipping. Still many great buys...by far the best produce market in Delray Beach. (Marios just 1/4 mile away has the best meats, prepared foods and bakery).
The only problem with the boys is the customers...bring a full helping of patience with you as many are just plain rude. I disagree completely with another reviewer who claims it is the younger people causing the problem. There is rarely anyone under the age of 40 in this market and the older they get the ruder they seem to be. The parking lot is also quite the adventure. Just park in the side lot away from the front door...the few extra steps is well worth not getting bashed by people that can barely see over their front wheel as they pull out without looking.
Once again, it's a great market, friendly staff...checkout is always very quick no matter how busy...just be patient, ignore the rude seniors and enjoy the low prices and quality fruits and veggies.

I love The Boys. Their food is amazing and I have never encountered a staff member who was out and out rude. Sometimes they are busy and may seem (to people who think they are entitled to immediate attention) a little rude or perhaps they don't understand English as well as you and I. With that said, the parking is rough, and many of the elderly customers are extremely rude and impolite. However, it is not fair to blame "The Boys" for their rude customers. If you want the best food at the best prices, put on your happy face and prepare to be patient. It is worth it. If you are one of those people who think your time is more valuable than everyone else's, do us all a favor and shop elsewhere.

Unfortunately, we are living in a world full of people (especially the younger generation) who have this sense of entitlement and those who want immediate gratification. Grow up. And for those of us in the over 40 crowd who grew up with 3 tv channels, pay phones, and snail mail, know that the Boys should not be missed!!! As far as the old folks who bang into you with their carts, or who create some pretty scary scenes in the parking lot, get over it, their old. Their reflexes aren't what they used to be. Have some patience with these people. I have actually met some very nice elderly folks at the Boys. Try going in with a smile on your face and don't be in a hurry. I have been hit once or twice with a cart and my own mother will not shop their with me because she was run into 4 times in one visit (twice by the same old person). I have found that if you make eye contact with those around you and smile or say hello, there is a much lower chance that you will be mulled over by these folks.

I love the boys, and will continue to shop their regardless of how many self righteous people come on here and complain about them. And as far as those who have left the store because they didn't feel they were being treated well, GOOD, we don't need you there stinking up the air for everyone else.

These Boys really bring back good memories how the market used to be back in the good old days. My family went one time and we loved it so much that now we shop there every week. The owners and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is fresh and it last for a long time. If you looking for good prices on fresh produce, quality international food and a top notch customer service than the Boys Market is the place to shop. Just come relaxed and patient if you visit the place during peek hours because it gets crowded. Patience and politeness is always the best medicine to get through the crowd.
Thank you Boys and Staff to be the best place to shop in our neighborhood. Keep up the good work.

The Boys is about as good as it gets! What's with the attitude, people? If you want the freshest produce,...including freshly picked herbs of all kinds, orange juice that tastes like it was just squeezed (because it was) the most delicious apple pies and baked goods of all sorts, every cheese imaginable, wonderful fish and seafood, an incredible wine selection at prices even cheaper than Costcos's......

WHINERS AND COMPLAINERS.......STAY HOME!!!!!

True.... it is difficult most of the time to get a parking space close to the entrance, but there is plentiful parking along the side and/or back when needed. And besides.... when I go to The Boys EVERY SINGLE WEEK WITHOUT FAIL, it is because of the consistent turnover of food.....IT IS THE FRESHEST!!!!! If you're looking to socialize....stay at home or go find a canasta partner! The owners and staff have a job to do!!!!! And they do it AMAZINGLY well!!!!

KEEP UP THE AMAZING JOB, BOYS ..... AND STAFF!!!!!!!!

It is a great family running a superb business. Wonderful staff, wonderful everyday and exotic fruit/veg. too.
Plus, their Strawberry Gardens and birds, swans, animals, strawberry decorated cars...on and on.
It truly is a wonderland. (Oh forget about the narrow aisles and unfortunately rude people)

We are from DC and Portland, OR and were so happy to find Boys. We loved the products and the scene was over the top entertaining. The customers were fun and funny and the staff was exceptional. I don't know what's up with the neg reviews. Grumpy much?

Y'know, some of the complaints that others have posted on this web site certainly are legitimate. For example, the staff at The Boys can seem rude because many of them don't speak a great deal of English. And yes, the aisles are narrow, the store is cramped, and it always seems crowded. On top of that, the customers can be obnoxious and inconsiderate. Plus, parking approaches the level of a vicious blood sport during the busiest hours. But all-in-all The Boys consistently presents the freshest produce at the best local prices throughout the year. And ya know what? I've run into rude help, obnoxious customers, narrow aisles, and terrible parking at Publix in Florida, Acme in Philadelphia, Giant in Maryland, Alpha-Beta in Monterey, and just about everywhere else I've ever shopped. So, those complaints are universal.

In dealing with the very real problems of shopping at The Boys in Delray Beach, I simply plan my day a little smarter. That is, I get there before the crowds arrive and on my way over to the store, I adjust my attitude. I expect rude help; I expect obnoxious customers; I expect to fight for parking. So, when I encounter such things, I shrug my shoulders and say, "Whudduh ya gunna do?"

Then I just go about my shopping completely happy in the knowledge that I'm getting some of the best produce at the best prices in town. And ya know what? You just can't beat that.

And although I've never purchased any prepared dishes from The Boys, I have seen them bring it out fresh and piping hot. So the suggestion that their prepared foods might be somehow tainted or "tampered with" seems a little inaccurate to me. The local Health Department would shut down The Boys in a New York minute if the food coming out of there was anything but perfectly good for human consumption. Moreover, The Boys do quite a business in a very competitive market. I sincerely doubt that they'd let their prepared foods jeopardize the impressive money they're making with their charming, annoying, cramped grocery store.

Go to The Boys. Relax. Enjoy. Experience. It's a madhouse, to be sure! But oh! What a wonderful madhouse it is! Take note of the model trains running on the tracks overhead!

We bought a prepared fish dinner (fish was spoiled and smelled up our home). We bought a prepared salad (later we noticed that an olive pit that had been spit out by someone was on top of the salad). Consequently, we did not have the appetite nor the courage to try the lasagna dish we purchashed. Can't comment on the fresh fruit and vegetables - did not buy any.

Boys Farmers Market is a great idea and it was really great to see all the fresh produce in one place. In theory it is a great idea, but the reality is that the customers ruin your shopping experience. We went once and the environment literally felt hostile! I am being completely honest. I don't know why it seemed everyone was grabbing food for their last meal. Maybe if they pipe some elevator music in their it may "soothe the savage beast'. We are going to try Mario's which we hear is better. Hopefully the shopping experience will also be less tense....

I love the produce and neat selections at The Boys, but dealing with their customers might change your mind about euthanasia. I think they funnel all the rude oldsters in S. FL into this one small store. Even if you go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the parking hassles, you still have to deal with these folks. I haven't had anything but positive experiences with the staff, unlike some of the customers who have weighed in on this issue.

I've been going to The Boys for a long time. First, it's not fair to blame the customer rudeness of older people, they're not all rude except perhaps during season when they come from up north and believe they are entitled to be rude.

I go when they first open, buy what I need and get out. If you plan your trips, you'll get a parking space and get out before someone tramples you. I think the produce is high quality and worth a bit of inconvenience once a week.

I had just went to "The Boys" for the first time this Friday, mid afternoon due to recommendations from a friend. Its a unique style for a market, it reminds me of the Italian Salumerias like in NY. However, there is a lot of stuff in not a lot of space, I had squeezed into a little opening between a rack of cookies and one of the hot food counters to order something. The girls who worked there was no more or less polite than I would expect, but and awful elderly woman came up behind me and closed me into the space I was standing in with her cart. I did not not know she came behind me and when I backed up to leave I almost tripped over her cart, and she had the audacity to be mad at me for bumping into her. So they only thing I can say about the market is, they do have some exotic things that you can not get at Publix, but can be found at Whole Foods and if you are willing to put up with the overwhelmingly rude, self-important, horrible, geriatric customers that make up about 85% of all people there when I went, then its fine.

The people experiencing bad service at the Boys must be opening up a rival produce mart ! I have been going to the BOYS since it was an open air fruit stand. I look forward to going every time EXCEPT for the customers. It is the rude entitled elderly clientele that ruin it for me , but I forge on with a smile on my face. The people that work there are always helpful despite occasional language barrier, the food is phenomenal at produce prices far lower than Publix usually! If you like cheese the cheese department is amazing, many low carb offerings and the meats are great too!

I was in the neighborhood and had some extra time so I stopped into The Boys because I've heard some good things about it. It was my first time there and so I took my time looking through the place. Apparently, this is a big mistake. The employees seemed friendly and I was asked a few times if I needed help. Each time I politely declined. Finally, after declining another employees attempt to help, I was told to leave. The reason? I was not buying anything and I might have been there to "take their ideas". What?!? (I had been there no more than 10 minutes) I told the employee I was just looking around. He told me "you can't do that at The Boys". Uh...OK? I'll tell you what else I won't be doing at The Boys --- spending my money. I left and will NEVER be back.

EDITED 8/27/08: Dayna (from 8/23 review), I can't speak for any of the others who had negative reviews but I can tell you I am NOT in any way associated with any grocery/produce market (although it is funny you mentioned it because that was seemingly what was implied when the employee told me I might "take their ideas"). I am glad you like it at The Boys and, for the first 9 minutes of my visit, I enjoyed it too. However, I won't be back because of the way I was treated for doing absolutely nothing wrong. They decided to ask me to leave because, apparently to them, I was not ready to buy anything during my visit and therefore was not a valued customer. I've decided to let people know of my experience because (1) people should know what happened and (2) hopefully someone from The Boys reads this and realizes their negative actions could have negative consequences for their business.

I thought that this place has great products for good prices, and all that quality and goodness packed in one little place where you can sample almost anything, and still manage to get home in time to cook it for dinner you should be more forgiving. I have witnessed the horror some customers inflict on minimum wage employees here. I am thankful that I dont have strangers snapping on me all day at work. They are paid to keep the place clean, fresh and stocked with things that PUBLIX wont stock, because its too costly or the item doesnt sell for them. I shop at the same publix you went to and while i have no complaints about them, I also think they have employees with very little english skills and appear non existent when you need something, thank god i have been going there for 30 years and know it in my sleep. The boys delivers something that publix wont, and i will take a whole store of employee's bad days over a reduced selection and maybe no one at all to help me at Publix. Thats just me. I still spend roughly $150 at publix and $30-$50 for 2 families and a dinner party every sunday from the boys, and Mario's for the meats when the meat matters, cause publix lacks there too!

I guess the new owners do not understand that the customers who come through their front door are the most important person in their life....the person who puts bread on their own table and feeds their family.

I am not suggesting the red carpet treatment but... yesterday, as an example, I had the misfortune to ask their coffee department girl to assist me with a simple question, and the response I received was, "what do you want?" I told her I wanted someone who was not rude!

She just walked away, so I did not make a purchase!

When I was waiting at the register with my friend who was making a purchase, I asked the cashier to speak to her manager she indicated she was busy ringing up my purchase, I asked again and she said, "I'm not talking to you?

Wow, I wonder if the owner bothered to hire and train people who might understand our English language and realized their jobs depended on the sales to their customers.

What a shame, lose a customer and everyone they know along with the internet blog venue, due to lack of caring or training of their staff. Plus they can be assured that I will never be subjected to their verbal abuse again.

Obviously the management does not care about their customers and does not appreciate the value of a satisfied customer and power of a badly treated one!

Publix around the corner was delighted with my purchase.

Every review on this page is completely accurate. It's a great place for produce and already-made meals. Just one thing is missing: if you do go to the market, make sure to wear chin guards.

It's such an overwhelmingly cool place (especially in comparison to everything else around) that people tend to not look in front of them when they're walking around with their carts. And, since it's a small place for the amount of people inside, people's legs get banged -- a lot!

The parking lot is pretty much the same deal. Wear your seat belt even before you pull out of that tight spot you were lucky enough to find.

Fun shopping place. Taste as you go from one end of the store to the other. Fresh produce and excellent prepared foods. The freshest fruit in town and the wine prices are great. Want fresh fish and meats..they have it all. Beware of the narrow aisles-people don't move their carts to the side. I make the 20 mile trip each way every week just for the freshest and most delicious items I buy. Go early or late in the day to avoid the crowd. You can't beat the variety of International foods and the Bakery dept is superb. This is a store you should NOT stay away from!

I love this market and I brave the chaos of the parking lot once a week because its really worth it. The produce is fresh out of the fields and their prepared foods are delicious. They also have quite a collection of decent wines. The staff, from the cashier right on up to the owners, are always willing to help. Try getting there early in the morning or after 4 to avoid the mad rush.

Once you get past the parking lot gridlock, you will find the best prices on just about everything. You know it's good when employees from local supermarkets are shopping there. The Boys has great produce at rock bottom prices, however my favorite stop is at the cheese department. They have cheeses from all over the world and their prices are always good (try the Mango-Ginger Stilton when they have it). The staff is always friendly, but patience is the key to maneuver your way through the aisles. At certain times, getting around slows to a crawl. However, for me, it is always worth the trip.

PROS: Great selection of cheeses and fresh produce
CONS: You may get hit by a shopping cart

The fresh produce and prepared foods here are simply fantastic. There is no doubt about it. However, it gets absolutley crazy here. The parking lot is a mad house. So much so that cars line up at the street outside just to even get in the parking lot. And then sometimes when you get inside, there are so many people that you can't even move. No doubt, the products there are great, but sometimes not worth the hassle.
