I am a Michigan State University student that rented out of Orlando. A Payless employee took advantage of me being young and inexperienced with car renting. I specifically stated I did not want the car insurance they offered and that I had my own he said "Okay and that he waved this fee, and he waved this 350 deposit fee etc." I was skeptical because with being under aged my price should have been around $300 but it was $400. I also asked the employee why my bill was $100 more than I expected and he said it was because of my age and 30% tax...BULL CRAP. As I was signing the contract and it came to initialing for the insurance he said "Don't worry about that, that's what I waved" so I assumed I was signing it for acknowledgement. After going back the second time and getting educated about the $350 deposit for NOT having insurance, it became clear to me that the first employee I talked to had acknowledged the fact that I said I didn't want it, but put it on my bill anyways. Also, during the second time they wanted to hold another $650 in addition to the $400 they were already holding and to set up a new reservation in order to change the price.. I already got ripped off so I wasn't going to let them hold any more of my money!! Who in their right mind would?! What got me is when I went back to speak to a manager after all that has happened, she even REVIEWED VIDEO FOOTAGE of me saying I did NOT want the insurance, and admitted that I said it. BUT since the end of the transaction he said something about a police report and bringing the keys back she said that was me accepting the insurance. But in reality, the fact that I originally stated in the video footage "I DO NOT WANT THE CAR INSURANCE I BROUGHT MY OWN CARD DOWN" should be enough for me... That being said, I feel like they discriminated against my age and lack of experience. So, for that I am going to make sure I post on all social media sites and business sites so no one else has to deal with the aggravation and loss of money I experienced. All I was trying to do was rent a car to look at grad schools and thought it would be convenient to rent a car, and I got thrown in my face by the manager because I wasn't persistent enough on changing my situation. Excuse the fact I am out of town and have other appointments that I have to attend.. Save yourselves and never rent here.

I needed to rent cars a few times in recent months, I found the prices of payless comes attractive. When I got it the first time, imediately I had a bad impression. I saw a woman who later I find out that she was the manager, was talking loudly and making aggressive gestures with a client because he did not want to buy insurance they offered. With me it was the same thing, I refused, I presented my (full coverage insurance), and they wanted every way to convince me that, my liabity was not enough to rent their car. Rude staff, want you to buy things you do not need ... horrible service, I hated.

Why is there not a 0 rating, I would not even give this company a 1! Once you get there, your initial quoted price becomes at least $15 more/day OR you can choose to have them hold a $350 deposit of your money (they charge your card). 14

Please stay away from Payless Car Rental. They present incomplete information on their homepage. Once they have lured the customer into their premises they take advantage of the fact that you are in a hurry and don't have the time to argue.
Their damage policy is totally unacceptale and puts the customer in a position of great liability.
Holders of foreign driver's licenses should be particularly aware as they are left with no choice regarding the insurance fees, no matter how well insured they are by regular insurance companies.
Payless does not allow transfer of the contract from the holder of a foreign driver's license to a spouse with an American license, much less of course to a friend. This would mean less liability for Payless, but they wouldn't be able to squeeze the same amount of money from an American.
In short - this is a place whose business model is to advertise low prices and then add fees that in my case upped the prize from $103 to $263!!!
On top of this the first car they offered us was smoked in and had a really foul atmosphere, in spite of the fact that Payless claims all their cars are smoke free. When we refused to take it they offered oss another car that at least did not smell of cigarrettes, but it had a sweet, foul odor that made it impossible to sit in the car without the airconditioning at full blast. There was paper in the car, the cupholders were dirty and it is doubtful that it had been cleaned at all.
When picking up a car at this place, be sure to take pictures of the car, preferrably with the date automatically copied into the picture. And take pictures of the car when turning it in, as this company is not to be trusted at any level.
This kind of company should be pushed out of business. Payless Car Rental in Orlando is creating a bad name for Orlando as a tourist attraction. The reception they give to visitors to Orlando makes the visitors wish they had stayed at home.
It is surprising that the Airport lets Payless use the airport facilities, as this franchise is doing its best to keep visitors away from Orlando.
I suggest that the airport revokes their consession and that it sets minimum standards for customer treatment that all consessionaires at the airport must adhere to. I am sure there are no other businesses at the airport that are accused by their customers of running a scam business. If that is the case I do not know. But I am certain that it would be good for the reputation of Orlando as a tourist destination and for the car rental industry if this company was either forced to change their policies and attitudes towards their customers, or simply be put out of business.

After booking about 3 weeks in advance, I read quite a few negative reviews online. I decided to keep the reservation because I had locked in a great rate, and all other rental companies had much higher rates. I was on a very tight budget.

We didn't wait long for the shuttle after calling from the phone bank. The driver wasn't very helpful or friendly, but he got us there in one piece. There was no line. They do smush everyone together at the counter, though. We had everythingn quickly explained to us and opted for the Collision Insurance for $16.99 per day. I did feel rushed to make decisions, but there was no $350 put on my card in advance like others had posted.

It cost me $133 for rental from a Sunday at 7pm until Tuesday at 1pm, including insurance. Our car was nice and clean. I was happy with it and would use them again if I was short on money.

I have a house in Cocoa Beach and I have been renting from them since I bought my beach house back in 97. Never had any problem and always get good service. I have to say that from what I read in other comments in this website and from being a business owner and working with people a lot that it seems like some people need to do their homework and also stop thinking that customer service is to do what the customer wants, a lot of times the customer is being unreasonable and want something from the company that makes no sense. In regards of being responsible for damages to the vehicle, the only thing that I notice from the company is that they explain to you what you are signing, because the policies in regards to that is the same to any car rental companies and you are signing the same thing every where else without knowing what you are signing for and you are being responsable for the same thing.

ACTUALLY WHAT I WOULD SAY IS BE AWARE!!! AND BE CAREFULL!!! ABOUT WHAT YOU READ ON THE INTERNET BEACUSE YOU NEVER KNOW THE SOURCE OF THE INFORMATION AND SOMETIMES YOU COULD BE READING FROM A VERY UNRELIABLE SOURCE. ALSO BE CAREFULL WITH WHAT YOU WRITE BEACUSE A LOT OF TIMES YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

PS: The only reason I decided to get in here and post a coment is that I was recently there and while I was there, a very rude customer that honestly have no idea about anything and was giving everybody a hard time.

8-30-10 We arrive at Payless to pick up our car. The 1st problem is the staff is very flat with customers, 2nd they try to pressure customers into buying CDW at 14.95 per day, 3rd if the car is damage in anyway the renter is 100% responsible for the cost of repair and 100% for paying for depreation of the car d/t damage, 100% responsible for what ever money Payless losses during the repair time.Payless will not submit for repair to anyone personal insurance, that is why they try to pressure renters into purchasing their CDW. Problem # 4 I told the rental agent the remote was not working he replied use the key. I told him the trunk did not have a key hole, he did not care, the car had several scratches & looked like it had been keyed the rental agent would not come look at the car, he just gave me a paper and said mark the damages on the paper. They also have customers sign a paper accepting responsibilty for any damages to the car regardless of how the damage occured. I was affaid of being charged for the existing damages.Payless was also charging an extra $ 4.95 per day for my husband to be added as the second driver. None of the other major car rental companies charge for spouses to be a driver. i called American Ex to cancel my reserveration. We booked another car at Enterprise which was actually $40.00 cheaper, better service, and a real mid size car. Do not rent from this place. If you do review your bill before leaving the office.

Lets start with the line. I got there at 3:45, there was 3 people in line. Some customers were confused and kept on coming back in to ask more questions. One couple was taking an extra long time deciding on whether to take the PT Cruiser or Toyota Yaris for about 15 minutes. A little after 4:15, I finally get to the front. I notice that they say "intermediate car - PT Cruiser" to the guy next to me. I'm thinking, "What's a subcompact? A segway??" So, guy tells me "Full Size car = 2009 Hyundai Sonata" (If it were the new Sonata, I probably would of taken it..) Sonata? WTF! That's a midsze car at Hertz! After complaining that this car is nowhere similar to a "Ford Taurus", he offers me a Ford Mustang Convertible - Not telling me what the price is, he prints up my bill, and its almost triple what I was going to pay. I started to walk out to go to Enterprise, then he gives me "every discount in the book", and after all that, I paid $50 over what I was quoted, which is a little less than what I saved by not going to Alamo, Hertz, Enterprise, etc...

So -

1.) Long Lines - Now I understand why people were at the counter for 20 minutes!
2.) Very High supplemental insurance rates compared to the other rental car companies
3.) Bait and Switch - what you agree to pay for is not what you get
4.) Not in-terminal - Be prepared to wait to be picked up/dropped off.
5.) YOU WILL NOT SAVE MONEY BY GOING HERE.

Pros: Flashy new Ford Mustang

Cons: Everything else.

My experience with the Payless Car Rental company at Jackson-Hartsfield Airport was down right awful. After all the fees were included, I paid more in fees than the actual rental agreement.

I was in a desperate situation. It was my nephew's wedding and I was one of the groomsmen so I had to get out of town. I had made a reservation with another company prior to going to Payless however; they did not accept debit cards at the airport . Needless to say, that company referred me to Payless. That was a mistake!

I will never rent from this company again. They screwed me BIG TIME! I paid twice the amount I would have paid at the previous rental company.

They should shut this company down! PLEASE DO NOT RENT FROM PAYLESS CAR RENTAL! YOU WILL END UP PAYING MORE!

I wish I had read these reviews before I booked a rental with Payless. The desk people must work on commissions. Their scare tactics to get you to you to upgrade and purchase insurance is unethical. First I was told that the car I booked ?? an economy ?? was unsafe and so small it could fit in the truck of the Highlander I drive at home.

Then the long explanations of the fees I would be charged if the car was in an accident. Several thousand for all different reasons. For only $17.99/day ?? it would all be covered. Then after I refused he came down to $14/day. What is this?.

I had to report any scratches/dents on a form before driving off the lot. There were > 15 dents, paint chips and scratches on the car I was given. I feared I may have missed some and would have had to give them a kidney upon its return. They also charged an additional $350 to my credit card as I did not sign up for the additional insurance.

Also, if the car was not returned as scheduled there was no way to extend the rental agreement. I would be charged $200/day if the car was late. Unless of course I agreed to an upgrade?.. for only $7.99/day.

This company should be investigated for fraud and deceitful practices.

I live in Orlando and rent car frequently for business. I decided to try Payless, but it was a big mistake! The car was filty on the inside and smelled like an ashtray! when I got on the highway the front end shook like crazy at speed over 55 MPH. The Customer service person took forever and seemed preoccupied during the rental. This was te first and last time I ever get a car from Payless! I also called there corporate office to voice my opinion, but only could get a long recording where you could leave a message if you like. What a Joke of A Company!

I read many negative reviews on payless the night before my trip. I had already booked a car and it was too late to switch. It was during Easter week so all the other car rentals either had nothing available or were 3 times the cost. I was really anxious getting the car because i was using it to travel to Daytona by myself. I have to say, for my experience, they were great. The shuttle was right there to pick me up. At the office they had my car ready. They did ask if I wanted an upgrade but did not push it. The car was fine, no problems what so ever. The shuttle back the airport was very timely. There were not hidden expenses. Overall it was well worth it. The only trouble I had was finding the office on the way back. If you are unfamiliar with the Orlando airport I would definitely make sure you know where to go. It got very confusing. Other than that......great experience!

We had to wait to an hour in line to get our rental car. You MUST (even if you have your own insurance that covers rentals) give deposit on your credit card of $350. If ANYTHING (even a scratch) is wrong they will charge you the $350. They will charge your credit card (not your insurance company) for any damages to the car. I'm so afraid to drive the Yaris (that sounds like a bunch of bolts rattling in a tin can), that I think I'm going to take it back tomorrow and rent somewhere else. Renting here bad and I don't want to feel like this on vacation.

This company quotes low prices on a standard sized car, then delivers you an economy car. In our case, we booked a standard sized car and were presented with a ratty looking PT Cruiser. In addition, we were told that our own insurance "doesn't work down here", and that we would have to purchase their supplemental policy for 130 dollars per week. We refused the coverage, signed the waivers, and were told that the company could withhold up to 350 dollars from our credit card for supplemental damages. The people who work here have the attitude of unpleasant grifters. I think this company sucks! I will never do business with them again.

We booked our reservation with Payless because it was the only place that seemed to offer a truly good deal during a very busy time of year (the week up to and including Christmas). We were very skeptical, given the large number of bad reviews we had read, but decided to take our chances because of the price. We needed a car for eight days, but discovered an on-line deal offering a seven-day reservation, starting the day after we were to arrive, at a rate almost $400 cheaper. To take advantage of this, we made two reservations: one for the first day, at about $57, and a second one for the remaining seven days. Thus, all told, we saved more than $300 for the entire period. We arrived at Payless half expecting them to make up some excuse to not give us the prices we had booked, but had no problem. We were waited on immediately, received very good service, and were given a very nice car (a Ford Fusion). Although it had more than 40,000 miles on it, it ran perfectly, had no visible dents or scratches, and was immaculate. We did ask if it was really essential that we come back the next day to complete the second booking, and were told it was. This was, of course, an inconvenience, but well worth it given the amount of money we would save. When we went back the following day, we asked if we could simply keep the same car we had, because we liked it so much, but were told we could not. The second car we got was a bit of a downgrade -- a Nissan Sentra, which is arguably better than a Ford, but a downgrade nonetheless in the sense that it was not as well-equipped. We asked if we could instead be given another Ford Fusion, or something similarly equipped, but were told we could not get such a car "at that price." (This, and having to come back to complete the second booking, were the only minor negatives.) The Nissan had much fewer miles on it, and was again in excellent condition, and ran very well. When we returned the second car, we were again served promptly and had no problems whatsoever. All in all, we were very pleased, and would absolutely rent a car from Payless again. We highly recommend Payless in Orlando.

I am a frequent traveler and rent a car at least 45 weeks a year. When planning a vacation to Orlando I decided to try to get the best car rental deal i could while staying with what I thought was a reputable company. Much to my surprise and dismay, I found Payless in Orlando to be anything but reputable. They employ unprofessional tactics to get customers to buy additional insurance to cover items such as loss of revenue to company in the event of an accident requiring repair to the car. When I refused to pay for the additional insurance (at a cost of $20 per day) they forced me to sign an agreement stating they could charge an additional $350 on my credit card as a deposit (that would be refunded at some point after the car was returned). They also forced me to sign an agreement that i was personally responsible for damage of any sort to the car and they would charge it to my credit card up to the entire cost of the car. The rental agents were unpleasant and high pressure to the point of being almost threatening. i had no choice but to rent from them as it was late this evening when I got to the rental location, however I am returning the car first thing in the morning and renting from an honest company that discloses fees up front. This car rental experience was the worst I have had in over 15 years of travel. My advice, is to stay as far away from Payless in Orlando as possible. You will get ripped off!!

This place is such a scam. After waiting half an hour for the shuttle, we arrive at the rental place and wait in an hour line (though there were only 7 people in front of us). We get to the front and encounter the following problems:

1) We were told that we would be getting a Yaris (the man said it like it was a bad car) and said for $30 we could upgrade to a camry. I said that wasn't necessary, we were quite excited to get a Yaris since that is what I normally drive. The man said - you like Yaris's? When we said oh yes, I have it, and its a great car, the guy started typing and said, "Oh, well, we don't have them a lot to offer. Oooh, it seems like we don't have it after all. We'll have to give you a Mitsubishi unless you upgrade." (we didn't upgrade, though I will say if you want to upgrade from a 2 door to 4 door, rave about the 2 door because in his desire to take the car that we wanted from us, he gave us a 4 door)

2) We explain that we don't want the insurance option as our insurance company covers rental cars. The man said that they don't accept outside insurance, and that unless we paid an additional $100 for insurance for the week, that he'd take out a $350 deposit against the credit card. He made it clear that if there was *anything* wrong with the car, including dents, that our credit card would be charged for damage plus money lost as the car is in the shop and that they would have the authority to charge up to $2000 if $350 doesn't cover it. Considering how shabby they were, it was obvious they were going to charge extra if we didn't get the insurance, so we agreed to pay (well 2 out of 3 of us said lets go, but the 3rd just wanted to get this over with)

3) Upon walking out the door, what was there but the exact Yaris the man had just described. I was so mad. I marched back in, ignored the line, and confronted the teller asking why we didn't get that Yaris. He said, "Oooh, we have DEMONSTRATION cars." Right. They bought cars purely to sit on the lot for demonstration purposes only. LIAR! He actively took the car he was giving us away because it would make us satisified customers and he wanted us to upgrade.

Got to Orlando airport and had to wait for their shuttle bus. When we arrived to the PayLess office, the line was ridiculous. We waited over an hour before we were seen and this is where it really got crazy.

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM PAY LESS CAR RENTAL, ORLANDO

The employee at the desk informed me that they would do not accept outside collision insurance, I must either buy theirs or pay $350 which would not be refunded until after 14 days of the rental return and only if there wasn't one scratch on the car. She went on to say that I needed to sign these papers and that I could be liable for as much as the value of the rental car if I do not purchase their insurance. Which was over $84 for 5 days rental. She was really using "bully" tactics and I was so frustrated.

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM PAY LESS CAR RENTAL, ORLANDO

Then she also informed me that the midsize car I rented was a 2 door Kia. I showed her my copies and it showed a 4 door vehicle, but she did not care. She was so rude.

There were other employees treating other clients so badly, especially this one senior citizen lady who was beeing bullied by a male employee. Anyway the experiece was the worst thing I have encountered in my life.

It was late, maybe now 10 pm and I didn't have anyone local who could pick us up and I didn't know if their shuttle would take me back to the airport so I could try and deal with a more reputable car rental, like Enterprise or Hertz. I had to bend over and pay their extra insurance cost. The two ladies infront of me had an equally exhausting and disgusted experience and we all made a pack to never use this company again and to warn others
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM PAY LESS CAR RENTAL, ORLANDO, YOU WILL PAY MORE, A LOT MORE

Last thing, when I dropped the car off I was instructed to go inside and hand a counter person this small piece of paper. When the counter man looked at the paper and looked at me, he said, well this is a mistake, according to our computer you put 30,000 miles on this car and of course you couldn't put that many miles on a car in 5 days. I said to him, wouldn't matter if I did I had unlimited mileage ........I smiled (glad to get the heck out of there) and walked out..............never to return again.

I rented a car for a week from Payless and all went well. The car was not squeaky clean but not bad either. I was picked up at the airport a just a few minutes after I called from the courtesy phone, from the baggage claim section at airport. It was past midnight and they close at 1AM, according to the contract paper (although they say the shuttle is 24 hour, it is mainly for people who park long-term at the same facility). I was bit worried. If you are reaching Orlando late in the evening, it might be good to talk to them and see what should be done if the flight gets delayed. Upon return, it was very quick checkout right at the car and the van to take me to airport was waiting for me. I did save some 100 dollars! I did see a lot of customers returning cars and boarding the van(s) for airport. So it does look like a popular rental agency.

My experience with Payless is by far the worst car rental experience I have ever had. I made a reservation for a car rental from payless through Expedia. The reservation was for a Standard Car which according to the site is a Ford Fusion or similar, 4 doors, 5 adults, 2 large suitcases, 2 carry-ons. Upon reaching the counter I had to wait over 30 minutes to be able to drive off with a rental car. In addition, the man at the counter claimed a Standard car included coups and wanted to give us a two door Ford Mustang which clearly did not meet our needs as we have two small kids in carseats. Tired from the flight and desperate to enjoy our time in Florida we told him we couldn't drive the Ford Mustand and that we needed something with 4 doors. The only available car was a Toyota Highlander. We ended up having to pay $300 instead of the $187 that we had agreed to pay on expedia. All on account of the fact that they didn't have the car we had reserved. Shouldn't we have gotten a free upgrade if it's their fault? I felt cheated and ripped off and will never rent anything from them again.

I had the worst service of my entire life at this place at 6am. I had one of their employees scream in my face over his mistake, which he only figured out after I asked for a manager. He then proceeded to apologize over and over and over. This branch operates illegally and tried to charge me for things that didnt have anything to do with my bill.

Seriously, spend the extra $2 a day on a car rental and go elsewhere!!!!

The man was screaming at a woman and her two tiny children when we walked in the place, I should have known what my experience was going to be like... What a nasty horrible person.

If do you do go, and you get George, you should just wait for the next person because he is a bi-polar psycho... I am not kidding!

Pros: The bus driver was nice?

Cons: Everything, the service, the people, the whole entire experience...
