Great sandwiches and burgers. The place is old, but well kept. The staff is friendly enough and the prices are average, I would recommend the burgers as they are excellent.

Go here! They grind their own hamburger meat daily. A St. Pete fixture for over 20 years- small place but you will leave satisfied- best burger in town. Check out their chicken wings too, you wont be sorry!

Well Pat F that's your loss! El Cap has one of St Pete's best burgers and it's proven by its repeat customers. Stop complaining about paying for your water and condiments and enjoy the great food! For two people you can eat there for

Went to El Cap Restaurant on 4th Street North in St. Petersburg, FL on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2012. Was waiting for a friend. The waitress arrived asked what I wanted. I stated waiting for friend, but would like water with lemon slices.

The burgers are good. Veggies pretty fresh. But a basket of Fries is not really a basket. They give you a smell helping of fries in a basket that can hold a lot more.\r
Also it made me angry when they charged me a refill for Ice Tea.

From what I hear, they were great with the previous owner, but the new management thinks they are God's gift to the restaurant business. I've seen this a lot and watch several good places go downhill. I see numerous comments about rude

What a waste of money, and a big disappointment. We will never eat there again the burgers have NO flavor and we asked for well done and we ended up throwing them in the trash and don't order chili you will get a cup of greasy water. I was so upset I had to get online and leave a comment.

I'm really surprised at so many negative reviews. El Cap makes a great homemade burger. I think too many people have gotten used to fast food burgers and don't know a good burger when they get one. They are juicy, not greasy, the way a burger should be. They remind me of how burgers tasted when I was a kid before frozen patties were used most places. El Cap may not be the prettiest restaurant around, but it is very atmospheric. Just to clarify for all of you tourists who think Floridians don't know good food, I have visited every state in this country (and 6 continents). I know good food and El Cap has always been good when I've been there. If you don't like Florida food, I would suggest that you vacation elsewhere!

This little hole in the wall was a great date! My hubby and I are foodies, I will admit this. So, when he took me here I was apprehensive. The waitress was so nice and the burgers were just how we wanted them and the flavor was wonderful. A definite must!!

I have gone to El caps for over 30 years and today was my last visit. Each time the burger gets smaller and the price gets larger. They actually now charge for lemon slices 25 cents with your over priced drink ( no free refills)!! When we went to pay our tab we were told they could not split the check, we all had $20 dollar bills and we were told they could not make change for us, they did not have cash available.. Is this a business with no petty cash to break change for $60.
When we asked for Mary jane the owner she never the waitress told us she is the one who would not give us change!! She never appeared and almost 10 minutes later the waitress appeared with change for all of us!! I know times are hard but they are going to get harder for this place. They forgot the most important part of business, Customer service.. That is what will keep the truly good places going, they will not last much longer sad to say at this rate.. We all vowed to never return and we will just support our first love Chattaways even more, they rock!!

we heard how good burgers were and ordered largest burger and basket of fries. we are not huge eaters and never eat at Wendy's, BK, McDonald's etc. but we like a good home cooked burger. when the meal arrived it was a skimpy 1/3 LB burger and skimpy basket of fries. when we asked waitress if we could get larger basket of fries she said everything was measured to exact portions.

tastes good but really skimpy portions. order two of each if you want to feel like you actually ate.

I was born in St PETE in 1964 - my folks brought me here in the "early days", & it was a treat for my sisters & myself to visit then. We moved to California in 1978. I just returned home this year to live (FEB 2009) & started visiting my old haunts - there on 4th was El Cap. Pulled in with my daughter (17 years old) & ordered 2 double cheese w/the works, onion rings, cold beer & root beer. No fancy onion roll, bottled water and/or tofu - just a couple of kick butt burgers in a familiar place. And yes, the service was the same - the best it can be with as busy as it is. Bottom line - if you want a great old fashion burger experience the way it was meant to be, i only have 2 words - EL CAP.

This place is horrible. Call me stupid, but I went twice just to make sure I wasn't dreaming about this horrible burger experience. How this place has a reputation for having a good hamburger, I will never know. First, the burgers are greasy beyond belief. Second, the service is beyond bad. Third, they charge for drink refills, making them the only restaurant in the world to do that. Finally, the place does not look clean. The menu is very limited (probably a good thing). Don't walk thru the back entrance, as you will get a full view of how dirty this place is. Anyway, don't waste your time with this pathetic joint. The management apparently does not care because there are plenty of regulars sitting at the bar, so they are making plenty of money off the poor grease suckers who don't know any better.

This is ther best SMALL burgerin own..horrible value for the size. Frank...why the refill chat=rge on the sodas? A $1.25 refill on a 10 oz glass is HORRIBLE!!! Most of the wair staff is friendly, but Frank needs a lesson in human kindness. I can'r believe the number of people who are faithfull to this place...treat people like you WANT them back.

I lived in this town for an eternity without having an El Cap burger. I could live another eternity without one. As I drove past the other options on 4th St today, something drew me here- maybe all the times I was invited but couldn't make it. When I found a parking spot adjacent to the front door, that little something went off inside my head (I hate it when that happens). The only good part was that I knew the bartender from one of my previous haunts.

I ordered a cheeseburger with cole slaw. The slaw was fairly salty and heavy on the mayo- tasted more like some sort of cabbage salad. Ordered my burger with lettuce, tomato and mayo- good thing, or the bun would have been looking around the restaurant for company. Had to remove the condiments to get a taste of the miniscule hamburger patty., which was ordered medium rare as the menu suggested. it was cooked on one side and then flipped for about 5 seconds, as best as I could judge. The bun was like some grocery store's private label.

If you want a fresh-grilled generic burger, stick to Five Guys. For a broiled Angus burger, look up the Country Skillet on Roosevelt in Clearwater. Sorry I missed the good days at the El Cap.

I have been there at least 3 times...in the last 5 yrs. Once with my sister and a couple of times for takeout orders. Honestly, I am originally from San Francisco. The people in St Pete haven't a clue what good food is. I have given this place 3 chances. Just ate there again tonite. And I said to my eldest son. I make better burgers than this. They had absolutely no flavor, the bun is ALWAYS soggy. And when I got a beer , I looked at it and wondered if it was for a child it was small not like big glasses that we are all used to. Harvey's 4th street grill really makes a great burger, even steak n shake is way better. It's just no good. I don't know who the heck is saying it is? I am stunned

I dont understand some of these reviews at all! How anyone can complain about the burgers here and the cost is beyond me!
I'm not even much of a burger person so I almost didnt try one the first time I went. I'm so glad I did! It was the best burger I've had around here. Extremely juicy and great tasting. The fries are just regular skinny fries but I liked them. My boyfriend and I are from Tampa and we make sure to stop here everytime we come into St Pete, and we stop on the way out too if we have time. No, the place is not a 4 star restaurant, so if that's what you're expecting, dont. If you want a casual place that's fun, layed back, has several TV's playing all the different sporting events, great tasting burgers any way you want them, this is the place to go.

What a disappointment. We have been going here for years and it WAS the best....NO MORE. Burger with everything and fries, how hard could that be? The meat was grey in the center and tasted like the stuff you got back in school. Full of cereal. The fries were limp and barely warm. We asked what the deal was and the waitress said the cook told her they got he lowest fat beef you could buy. So much for the guy who said the beef was hand ground daily. They also use to have great fries about ten years ago but decided to cut the cost and get some cheap ka-ka. One of the long time waitress told us when we inquired. Then when a reviewer was sitting next to us, the owner told he waitress to give the reviewer 'the good' fries. They have only gotten worse. We will NOT be back or will we send people there like we use to. McDonald's is better...ICK.

What a joke. Forget the hype. This dirty little grease pit has lousy service, lousy hamburgers and charges for refills. Oh, and the fries are nasty as well. And don't get me started on the cleanliness (or lack of) in this place. Its a shame people just believe the hype and eat there actually thinking those hamburgers are good! Babalu, Chattaways and Toojays (yes, I am not kidding) have much better burgers.

Juicy burger on a cheap bun makes this one of the best in the bay area. They grind their own meat daily which makes the difference. Their own recipe for the spicy mustard is outstanding but you have to make sure you order it as it doesn't come unless requested. Sure, they charge extra for lettuce and tomato but its still cheap. For 2 people w/burgers and a beer each, sometimes fries or onion rings (onion rings are awesome), you're still out of there for $20. The only rude encounter we ever had was when we showed up 5 minutes before closing - go figure. Still, we got the reliable, juicy burger and fast service. Whenever we're in St. Pete, the first meal (and sometimes our departing meal) is always El Cap. Note: cold beer! Never order a glass of wine.

I have had many a burger and I must say, this is definately one of the best. They do charge for everything, but in this day and age I can accept that. For under $20 my husband and I had burgers, fries and beer... ICE COLD BEER! The place was extremely busy on this particular weekend, I can see why, and still the food was great. The service was quick and to the point. They got our order in and we sat back and watched baseball and before we knew it we had our meals. Very satisfied and I would recommend it to everyone. They are coming up on 50 years of business and I can see why!!!!!

We decided to check this place out after seeing that their burgers always seem to be listed near or at the top of any Best of the Bay type lists, and though we were in for a real treat.

Eh, not so much.

The place is dirty, cranky, and rude. The burgers? Small, below-average, highly over-rated, and deceptively priced (all toppings are extra). I won't be back, and I wonder what kind of hype machine must be churning all these #1 Best Burger in the Bay awards. When I want a truly awesome burger, i'll stick to Green Iguana, thank you very much.

This place looks like a cool little local joint that would have great burgers. Surprise! It is awful. Hamburgers are greasy and not very big. Service is terrible. Most alarming, the place in NOT clean. A couple people told me they had St. Pete's best hamburgers. You have got to be kidding! WHile we were there, two people walked out after sitting down due to lack of service. Most important, the burgers were REALLY bad.

Pros: Sorry, I can't think of any

Cons: The place is filthy

I used to be a loyal customer, but when it comes to burgers? Don't believe the hype.

I went with a friend on a Saturday at 2PM after our workout: not only was our lunch extended to 90 minutes due to ineffectual service (complete with eye-rolling, big dramatic sighs, calling me "Honey" repeatedly, and the most egregious of all offenses: the server put their hands on my shoulders), but when my friend dared to complain about an undercooked burger (we had to physically bring our tab up), the nasty gray man behind the bar insulted her.

WORSE? When *I* went to politely inquire as to whether the check had been paid and a tip left (because even under the worst circumstances, which this qualified for--I pay: as it turns out, she had already), he actively insulted *ME*. Y'know what? The burgers aren't all that, and now I'm thinking it's just not a hygienic place to eat. I guess the ambience is nice, if you enjoy a place where your skin sticks to the chairs and tables, but after years of being a loyal customer?

They've actually managed to make me say, "I wouldn't allow an animal to eat there, much less a human."

If you're looking for reasonably priced food, drive the extra few miles to Tavern at Bayboro, and if you're looking for a decent burger, go to Chattaways. Northeast Tavern has some nice dishes, and y'know what? You might sneer as a local at a chain, but Bennigans on 4th street offers a decent burger. Better yet? Harvey's on 4th street creams the E COLI-CAP, and it's $1.50 more for a burger--folks THINK it's cheap at the El Cap? Do the math: the beers are sized for Hobbits and they charge extra for lettuce and tomato. Fries don't come with the burger. Service doesn't come with the burger. For two people, you still spend $20. WAKE UP St. Petersburg. The E-ColiCap ain't all that.

Pros: If you're homeless, you can scrape change together for a raw hamburger.

Cons: The service, undercooked food, cleanliness and horrible management.

This place is great if you like raw cheeseburgers and if you enjoy getting into a verbal confrontation with the manager. When I dared complain about my raw burger I was told to go to McDonald's. Nice. This place is overrated. If you want the best burger in town, go to Chattaway Burger--not far away! And a million times better.

We went for the first time last night. The food was awful... there was no meat on the burger.... I should have just asked for a veggie burger... the fries? ugh... they were not good at all... the beer? Very good... Service? What service???

This place does do good burgers, if not great. No they're not the mechanically premade mcD thing most people are used to. They serve a med-rare burger, hard to find nowadays. The fries are good, although I've had to send them back one or twice. They've really cleaned it up too. The servers aren't too nice til they know you, kids are not allowed at the bar (thank God someone with common sense in Florida!) toppings are extra(burgers are $4.00 don't complain about 30cents for cheese & toppings) and you have to pay for soda refills.(How many sodas do you need with a burger??) If this bothers you, don't go! If you want a good old fashioned burger and a cold beer, (new draft selections too!)then this is the place. If you want white glove service, go elsewhere.

Pros: Good burgers, very casual

Cons: other patrons who think they're above it (why are they here then?!)

The hamburgers are the best around!! You go there for the great food and not necessarly great service. They do not have changing tables or high chairs so be prepared. Great choice for burgers and great prices too!!!

I've lived in the Tampa Bay area for over 20 years and have been going to El Cap the entire time. It's consistant~~that's the BEST review anyone can get! Yep. The burgers ARE greasy....that's part of the LUV! The atmosphere is fun, you can always get a good tip on a dog or horse race here!, and the outdoor seating is worth waiting for, when the weather is nice. The only complaint....the basket of fries HAS gotten smaller and the quality has gone down there, too. BUT SEND THEM BACK. They'll come out right the second time around. Shouldn't have to ask twice, I know.....We'll still keep goin' back for more!!!

My wife and I went to this "burger" joint after we had heard it was the "best burger in the Tampa Bay area" as rated by a local free publication. As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for" (Free advice). The burgers were small, full of grease and almost tasteless. The fries were average at best. The service was so bad it was actually funny...in a sad sort of way. Our former NYC waitress couldn't have cared less about customer service...and it was a slow night. I'll never go back. I wish I could comment on the positive reviews, but the rules prohibit such. Nevertheless, there is a better burger joint to be found elsewhere.

El Cap has the best burgers in the country.
Several years ago I took a job in St Pete and bought a house a couple of miles from El Cap. During one of my 'local recon" jaunts I discovered El Cap. It's a small red brick building with an old rusty neon sign...the kind with the curlicue letters. The smell of frying onions and cooking burgers was all it took to get me inside. The bar was lined with olde guys in pastel shirts and panama hats watching a Devilrays game on the big TVs...it was a Sunday afternoon and the total atmosphere was "south florida ecclectic". I bellied up to the bar and ordered a draft beer, a cheeseburger (onion & pickle) and fries. What I got was one of the coldest beers in town, a seven napkin burger (they only use black angus beef)cooked to perfection (the cast iron grill has been being 'seasoned' since 1964) and some really, really good fries. When the bartender asked how the food was and if I wanted another beer I said " Yeah gimme another beer......bye the way, my name is Steve...I'm a 'regular' here". The bartender shook my hand and said "my name is Frank....nice to meet you but I've been tending bar here for over 20 years and I've never seen you before in my life". I told him "oh.. this is the first time I've been here...but I am a 'regular'. In the next week I ate dinner in there 5 times. I ate at El Cap at least once a week the whole time I lived in St Pete and I stop in everytime I'm in South Florida. (I'm a pro captain and do yacht deliveries). I travel a lot and have to say that I've had some mighty fine burgers (the Beachcomber in Charlestown MD is damn good) but NOBODY has the consistant superlative burger that El Cap provides.....everyday!
I am here to tell you folks....this has to be the Cheeseburger that Jimmy Buffet was singing about.
take care all,
cap'n steve

Good to see I'm not the only one that doesn't appreciate the place much. Last time I was there (last March when Chris and I came down to St. Pete) I saw a couple of cucarachas crawling around behind the counter. Sadly, I was supremely hungover (having just walked there from Bill's place after pulling an all nighter) and between the sour alcohol gut and seeing those cucarachas I hurled in the bathroom before I even left the joint!

The bathroom was so so filthy I doubt they even noticed.......

If your looking for an under cooked tasteless slab of ground beef than this is the spot for you!

Today was my first visit to the renowned "El Cap" restaurant and after reading this column several times I thought I was in for a treat. Not! After ordering the famed cheese burger (medium well by the way) I was ushered a small to medium sized burger that was basically raw all the way through. I had ordered the burger with the fixings on the side (don't like mayo) and the thing had a hemorrhage through the bottom of the bun. The waitress did come by once and ask if everything was OK with our order but I had only had time to take one bite out of this thing and had not realized what I had a hold of. After that I did not see her again until I was thoroughly disgusted (I will give her the benefit of a doubt she did say something about a smoke break) and had given up only managing to consume the outer most portion of the raw puck of a burger. To my dismay the waitress while picking up our service items (plastic basket) made no comment on the fact there was a raw pile of burger still remaining in mine. this lead me to believe this must be a common occurrence at this place.

Bottom line, I just would not recommend this joint to anyone.

And if your wondering why I went ahead and ate the outer portion of the burger, well I was fricken hungary at the time.

Pros: Convient location

Cons: Terrible food & service

Was told this was the best hamburger joint around. A group of us found out this might have been in the past but things sure have changed. Very small burgers, terrible service and to boot for a small place they wouldn't allow five people to have seperate checks. Add one more log and there are no refills on sodas. Don't drink them but always see friends getting free refills from the cheapist to most expensive type restaurants. This place is off bounds for us!

Rude, Rude, Rude. Asked him to split a bill down the middle and he threw a tantrum. First time in a very long time I did not leave a tip. Go here if you want to give your money to an unappreciative oaf.
