I had been going there for sometime and satisfied with the service and price UNTIL...
Twice now I've had a haircut and beard trim where the technician was totally incompetent AND unsupervised. In the first case, an old man provided the cut and trim; it was so uneven that when I got home, I shaved my head and beard and started over. In the second case, a young man performed the service with nothing but an electric razor. My first clue to trouble should have been when I asked that he cover my clothes to prevent hair from getting on them. When completed, the cut was way shorter than I had asked for, I had hair all over me, there were patches of hair that was 2 times longer than elsewhere, and the beard/mustache trim was so uneven (asymmetrical) that when I got home I had to fix it myself. My biggest concern, was that NO ONE supervised this work. NO ONE checked afterward to see if services had been performed appropriately.
To those that say "make a phone call," Please understand, I'm not complaining about the cuts, I'm complaining about the lack of supervision that should have caught the mistakes and given corrective instruction to the students. If it happened to ME twice, it happened countless to others... and padding the rating stars won't change that.

To all the comments that are negative, just call the office and they will be more than helpful. Just call instead of complaining.

To negative people, it amazes me how people such as the last post ... go and try and bash a school with such conflicting information. Even some of the other post. Of course a school is going to ask for information before the take you on a tour. How else would they follow up , no how to help you , and answer any questions. I did the same process and then after I made the choice to go to school I sat down and did financial aid later. Wow what is so wrong about that, people are that negative that you have post about being upset someone wanted your info , into a school you walked into to find out information. Then go and post an anonymous George W name and complain about it. How valid can your complaint b with a fake name. Also I really doubt they have been in business for 50 years by doing the wrong thing. I had a great experience at my school , i went everyday, put the work in and have been doing hair since and supporting my family while my husband isn't employed right now...

I doubt then anyone on here that is posting a complaint even called the main office to get more information on any concerns they had, but only come to a place that is very one direction in being nasty. I know first hand when I called , everyone was open , friendly and only there to help get me through school, even when I wasn't doing my part and attending , I got tough love and they got me back on track. This is a family who loves what they do and helps address any concerns..... If you had a bad experience and posted it here, i bet if you had the guts to call and tell the office and give them the chance your issues , would be resolved and you could get first hand info. To just bash a business or person on here and then run and hide under the internet.

I hope people can make their own decision in the world and not ever rely of posting . I had a great experience, I was part of 2 different community events Manhattan did, I also placed in the annual school competition they do , I loved the Pivot Point curriculum.....

Just remember everyone it's your journey in the world !

Robert Valdez the owner is a complete liar. They scam people into getting their personal information. I have seen 3 other schools and Manhatten refused to take me through a walkthrough until I first applied to their school and filled out all the paper work. Robert tried to claim that its required by federal law before they take you on a walkthrough, and continue to claim that consumers are not smart enough to make an educated decision without following their company proceedures of applying for loans. Robert, just so you know the department of education could not find the statue you quoted to me. I have since talked to several students and they said that they feel manhatten has been stealing their money in that manhatten had been receiving extra funds from grants that they didnt tell the students about. When these students started to question and ask for paperwork they misteriously recieved checks in the mail for refunds.

Iam a customer at the Brandon school and have been for a few years. In response to all of the negative comments about the schools, I think you need to hear some positive comments. I have very thick hair that is not curly but not straight either. I have gone to salons and paid tons of money to get a great cut and I would end up looking horrible. Then I found the school. I go there and get a great cut EVERY time. I have had some students that would talk for a minute about the plan of how to cut my hair and they take off with it. I've also had students that were really unsure and Mrs Trisha has stood there and walked them step by step the whole way through the cut. I have seen teachers bring their students in for classes in the salon area and some students are just uninterested, so when teachers are encouraging students and teaching stuff I wish I could inderstand and you see "not spectacular" or a "waste of time" is disgusting. I see they have changed people, but all of the teachers have been very friendly and helpful from my point of view. I also have recommended friends and family to go there. You have to remember, everyone there is learning and no, not everyone is perfect.
Also, posting things that are down right rude......it can cost good teachers a position, keep customers from going in and checking it out themselves, and its just wrong. I know if you have a problem, they bend over backward to fix it amd make you happy. So why not ask for help instead of trying to kill them on here? Remember, your high priced stylist who could care less about you had to start somewhere, so check out this great place that makes you comfortable. Love you guys, keep up the great work!

Horrible school, Horrible teachers. This school sucks for clients and students. Please don't waste your time or your money. Am pretty sure this school will not be in business for long, They can't even keep half their staff for a year. Have you notice, there are always new teachers, and the teachers are never ever, almost never around. Omg this school is a joke. And the teachers gossip about the students, and even fight among each other. Really? 50 year old women acting as this is high school! yes this a joke.

Let me add something else if this school was so great would the owner really come online to defend he's company.
If you know your company is doing great , why bother to come on here battling with others . That should show you what kind of business they are running.
Manhattan got a lot of complaints for a reason .. so for the directors to come on here just make it look so much worst for Manhattan

The students are even worse. If there not outside smoking pot or in the corner chain smoking, then they are gossiping...

I came accross this website accidentally and now I am so glad that I did!
My husband was enrolled in this school-sadly though since he already has PhD Degree from Europaean University but hey-life is tough and there are almost no jobs for people with degrees in art and sculpture(like him) so he decided to go for something close to his line of work.I am starting my medical residency this year and with what you get paid a a resident physician(or cheap hospital labor) we were thinking that he could work only until I finish my training and finally "get to earn big bucks"
He graduated in December and let me tell you:during the entire year he was overworked, tired, since he was very good they were giving him 3-4 clients AT THE SAME TIME ON REGULAR BASIS!
Finally,2 months before his graduation he started having terrible pain in his right shoulder, forearm and arm and he hardly managed to finish services so he can separate from school in time.
After that,he developed fully blown tendonitis and tennis elbow +carpal tunnel syndrome and IS STILL HAVING PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH MINIMAL IMPROVEMENT!!!last visit with PT and orthopedic surgeon was on Friday and they pretty much told us that he WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WORK UNTIL the end of this year and we're looking into 2 more months of PT followed by pool and special exercises at the gym later this year!He cant cut hair-he was trying to cut mine and my friends at home this weekend-no way since his arm hurts!
So,to summ this experience:
1.Wasted money for tuition,gas(50 miles/day)
2.Ended up with disabled husband who is depressed +medical bills that I have to pay
3.Will be moonlighting a lot during my residency in order to make extra$$ (and that will probably result in sleep deprivation, depression, stress etc).
4.Can't file a lawsuit against them(I do have diagnosis and it is clearly written that overuse of his right arm in the school caused this problem) since this is not worker's comp
I am just devastated and I only wish I had known better before letting him enroll in this horrible school.
I simply wish I had someone to give me the right info.

I decided to write a review on here because I'm sooooo disgusted with this school I can't keep it to myself anymore... Maybe someone from the school will return my phone calls or at least write back on here to clear up this matter... First of all, I went into Manhattan Hairstyling Academy on Fletcher--the North Tampa location to see what it was like. I got a deep conditioning treatment and a hair cut. The price was great, but that was the only thing... It took 4 hours for a simple haircut, and the student who did it was not gentle at all when brushing my hair... I was actually sitting in the chair with tears in my eyes because she was yanking it so hard! When the torture was finally over my hair looked HORRIBLE!! It was so long before and to fix the horrible hair cut at a real salon they had to cut it shorter than my shoulders. But that's nothing compared to what they did to me and my VA benifits! That school is robbing me... They're getting money for me being in attendance there, when I didn't even start going. I've been trying to get a hold of someone to help me for over a week now and not one person will return my phone calls. I keep leaving messages and having assistants leave notes but for some reason they just aren't getting to ANYONE! I really don't like this "school" and everyone I've talked to said the teachers are terrible, and it's "ghetto as hell." so just don't go there... thank you

I personally visit town and country campus . lately the instructors are every day more kind and show more interest to help students, instructors have different nationalities and is a familiar environment, is always someone who can communicate with you and help. I met a teacher who thanks to her my daughter has just enrolled in the academy. a very professional way they have to explain procedures to students. you feel safe ......

I am half way in my program and I have to say I am so pleased with my program that I wanted to let people know. The owners are always open to phone calls and as a family business have a true concern for their students. My teachers are always very helpful and the Pivot Point system really has me excitied and can't wait to finish and start doing hair!!! They also have a new Make up / Skin Program and I will be taking that next.

GO HERE !!!!

I would like to address the few concerns that have been posted here. Manhattan is a family owned and operated business. We have a open door policy for all questions and concerns. I would welcome the opportunity if any student or client is unhappy with their education or service , we are always open to listening and helping in any way. 813-258-0505

We have been in business for 50 years because we are dedicated to our industry and the education we provide. We are passionate about always making sure our educators are providing the students with the education they need and deserve . I believe our students appreciate that we do not continue to employ weak links but continue our search for the best of the best when the times arise.

Lastly, there were concerns on the physical demands of our industry. During the 12 months of school every student has service requirements they must meet , set forth by Board of Cosmetology and NACCAS. This is not only to prepare the student for being behind the chair full-time, as well as to insure they have the knowledge and experience once graduated to begin their career. This profession is very demanding and hands on , it's our hope that
once you graduate you are behind that chair working as much as possible , and living your dream you started out doing as a student. !

School is terrible,I agree with comments below. Some of the students-my god, they can't even cut basic hairstyles and they let them graduate...
I haven't witnessed the competition but-from what I've seen while getting a haircut-I am sure that the judges were BIASED and friend's of the Director's that is not too hard to imagine/believe.
One thing for sure-I aint going back there!EVER!

To all people reviewing posts: Below are excerpts of a copy of my reply to Mr. Ben Miller (aka George W. on this page) to the BBB dated March 1, 2011 in reference to his concerns. This person must feel the need to hide behind a computer anonymously and make accusations. I have yet to receive a phone call or any form of personal contact to address these concerns which leads me to believe thast some of it may be fabricated. We have always maintained an open door policy and anyone that has ANY concerns can always call me at 813-258-0505 ext. 0 and ask for me to be paged. As a family owned company in business for over 50 years, we did not get to where we are today by lieing, cheating or stealing anything and I personally resent the implication.

Excerpt from letter to BBB:
"Upon arrival you would have been asked to complete a 1 page simple questionnaire. I can assure you this is not "loads" of paper work as you have mentioned. This is also standard policy as it is required by hte US Department of Education. Again, the fact that you were a cash paying customer is irrelevant. There is more to your education than simply the esthetics of our facility...."

Yes the "Qualification Application" is a requirement (not specifically to give a tour, that is OUR company policy) but by our accrediting commission (NACCAS) which in turn is approved by the US Department of Education to accredit schools. The fact that it is NACCAS policy makes it a federal requirement and school requirement to have that form completed by anyone interested in making applciation to the school.

In reference you your post on this website, there is no scam. If you truely are a cash paying customer and we were trying to "scam" you, we COULD have brought you in, tried to enroll you under high pressure tactics and accepted your money. That is NOT how we run our business. Your personal information is useless to us otherwise. Our "Qualification Application" as referred to above is a 1 page form that, among other things, lets us know what programs you are intersted in, if you have attended other schools, if you are elligible for enrollment via a high school diploma or GED, and how you heard about us. Yes it is used for follow ups and NO this form is not used to apply for loans. That is done later when you have made the decision to attend and have been accepted. In your case, as a cash paying student, you would not have filled out a FAFSA which is used for all Financial Aid and as such would not be able to apply for loans.

In reference to your accusation of stealing students money and refunds, there are 101 reasons based on ellibility, additional charges, credit balances or many other things that could occur at anytime during a students enrollment. There is no way to comment on every single scenario.

I sincerely apologize that we as a business must have done something to you personally to make you feel such negativity and animosity. For the 2nd time I welcome your phone call to address your concerns, and hope that you pick the school that best fits your educational goals.

This school is amazing!!! I am so surprised at some reviews below. As I have only had an amazing experience as a student. I also along with other students took place in the internal competition and was very happy with the results and I wasn't from the winning campus.

As a school they truly care about their students and their concerns. I have learned so much and can't wait to start my new career!

Please people-DO NOT consider enrolling here under any circumstances!!!!It is a rat whole literally. My girlfriend started last year and is about to graduate now.She recently took part in an internal competition(school only) - wedding and wedding hairsytle.
Only manhattan schools students were competing. She prepared so thoroughly together with her instructor-I went to the competition(as an observer) with her and it was an utter DISASTER!Results were 100% FABRICATED and please dont think that i am biased since she is my friend -there was a very good guy with heavy accent and an older lady who were definitely better than my friend (they should have gotten 1st and 2nd place) so its not like I was expecting her to win-I felt ASHAMED even though I am not a stylist-you should have seen who got the awards?Hairdos that I CAN DO BLINDFOLDED!!!!
Later on,they told me stuff about Director and how she picked the jury and of course her student won...What a CHARADE that all is.
Not to drag any longer-I am sorry I even went over there last weekend and even more-I am sorry for all that hardwork on behalf of my friend and obviously some other participants-sadly, this was already set even before the competition begun.
When they announced 1st,2nd and 3rd place-the crowd whent mum for a sec and then everyone was shaking their heads in disbilief.
Where did good old justice go?What is happening in this world and how are you supposed to succeed if you are an honest, hardworking and caring individual????
I felt like writing this here-other people have rights to know...

One of the best haircuts I ever got here. I don't care much for their styling...they need to brush up on that, plus, they don't use any product in your hair so there is absolutely no hold to it. Can't complain about my cut though!

At Manhattan Hairsyling Academy you can get your hair done or nails and other salon type services for a fraction of the price that you would expect to pay at a salon because they are students. I don?t trust them enough to do something like my eyebrows or hair, but I have gotten my nails done there and they did a fantastic job. You might expect to wait a while though.

I have been to the Manhattan school a few times, this place is busy most of the time, cost is great you do have to wait a little while, but once you get in the chair it is pretty quick. these are students, they do everything, facails, hair, nails and they also have birthday parties for children, then can get treated like a princess.

parking is a bit of a problem most of the students take up the spaces, but they are added on to the parking lot.
