I occasionally used to go into Murphys when shopping at the nearby supermarkets with guaranteed quality who's prices may be a little higher but you know what your getting. The same can not be said about Murphys. I usually only get bananas because the rest of their produce is usually half rotted or just starting to turn. I've been burnt too many times before there. I recently made the mistake of buying a bag of potatoes there. For some reason the store always has a rancid smell, possibly from the deli. Because of this I could not detect that the potatoes smelled moldy. I detected this later on when I got home. I sealed them in a bag and didn't think much of it. They seemed firm enough. A few day later I decided to cook some and when I opened the bag it smelled like sewer water. I cut one open and it had black mold inside it. I took them back the following Monday 4 days later. Instantly the rude old woman working there started acting rude and arrogant towards me accusing me of returning perfectly good produce 5 days later, as if that's past how long potatoes should last. I was even willing to swap them for something else but everything else in the store was rotted. I was kept waiting for almost 10 minutes all the while listening to her insults of how tired she was of people to the other customers and the other old lady working the other register. Finally the manager showed up and she said I had a bad attitude and wanted to return 5 day old potatoes. I said she was the one with an attitude and then told him they smelled like they were grown in sewer water. He told me that they smelled like dirt and the supermarket potatoes were no good if they didn't smell. I told him they smelled like sewer water and that they were black inside. He said they were not and went up to the deli to get a knife to cut them open. The first one he cut open was black inside. He then said that was normal. I finally asked him why he was being so ridiculous about returning my money. He said he would be happy to do so. Funny way of showing it I'd say. The area is mostly New York City people that seem to love this place. My neighbor from Chicago went there one time and said the place sold garbage. Maybe New Yorkers don't mind eating garbage but I'm not about to. I remember in Seinfeld when Kramer was blacklisted for taking back fruit to a store. I don't have to worry about that because I will never step foot in that smelly dump ever again. And I will appreciate the pleasant non arrogant help at my local supermarkets.

I like to go to Murphy's to get select cuts of meat. I generally will pick up an entire filet and cut it myself and save probably $8 a pound. Very fresh and quick. They also have a nice selection of fruits and vegetables and italian groceries. My kids like to come with me and pick up the old-fashioned glass bottles of orange cream soda as a treat. Nice compliment to regular grocery shopping.

Murphys is a local market that is a great alternative to the larger markets in the area. If you need a few things and are in a hurry, this definitely is a good place to stop. Everyone is always friendly.
