The Scene
Rich wood and ochre walls draw you into a calming dining room and away from the frenzied strip mall surroundings. An army of servers delivers assistance and food at your leisure. The combination of elegant surroundings and dependable service lures a crowd of regulars that keep the restaurant consistently busy.

The Food
For starters, go Thai with the tender basil rolls. A Malaysian appetizer, roti canai--a pancake dipped in curry--lacks flavor. Both the Malaysian buah mango chicken--served in mango halves--and the Malaysian pineapple prawn--immense shrimp served in a pineapple--impress with presentation and novelty, but Thai fans may be turned off by the sweetness. The deep-fried, soft-shelled crab in a spicy Thai curry paste offers a tangy treat with a side of crisp asparagus. Four ice cream choices--coconut, green tea, vanilla and mango--make dessert as difficult a decision as the entree selection.

Key Points

  • Full Bar
  • Catering
  • Take Out

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Despite the restaurant's name, the dishes are served only moderately spicy unless you look very serious when requesting something "hot."
  2. What to Drink - A small wine bar sits prominently at the entrance. You'll find a rather standard selection of $20-$30 wines, most available by the glass.
  3. Look Good - The tempting daily specials are posted at the restaurant entrance. To avoid confusion when ordering, take your time and read them before taking your seat.

This is by far my favorite Thai place in Atlanta. The food is always wonderful and the restaurant is very nice. I've gotten delivery from them and that was excellent as well.

They've changed the name to Top Spice and the name is more fitting. Everything from the service, ambiance, food and drinks is just great. We have a special table that we prefer and the staff always tries to accommodate us when me make reservations. The restaurant is great for lunch, dinner, business and romantic meals. The food is so yummy and there is something for everyone on the menu.

PROS: great food great prices

This restaurant is a great mix of thai and malaysian foods which really complement each other. I found the food very authentic and delicious. The prices are very reasonable and the serving sizes are generous. I went there during lunch hours on weekdays and found the place very crowded. The service was pretty impressive.

Ratings_icons Nice place

apache6131

We ate there last night since it was one of the top rated Thai places on Yelp. The roti canai was good, but lacking in portion size, not really fit as an appetizer for sharing. I had the beef Rendang, which was ok, but not as good as Penang on Buford Hwy, not enough spice to it. My wife had Prik Khing tofu, which she thought was ok.
Both entrees came out very quickly which was nice, though the drink refills weren't as quick, which was understandable as the place was fairly busy.
If you're looking for a place that does both Thai and Malaysian food and you are local to Toco Hills, this place is good, otherwise try Thai Chili, Tamarind Seed, or Le Thai for Thai food or Penang for better Malaysian food.

Pros: Quick Service, good roti canai

Cons: Entrees weren't as good as some other places

Ratings_icons Nice Restaurant

My husband and I have eaten at Top Spice on several occasions. We love thier Shrimp pineapple fried rice, and most of the seafood dishes, (some can be rather spicy) and the beef satays. Great customer service. Most dishes at Top Spice are reasonably priced.

Top Spice is dark lit and spacious. The decorations in there are unique from most of the other restaurants because they are jars of spices and the spices are also carved into the table. The food here is ok also. Very American like but I did enjoy their pad thai. The serving size of the dinner portions were a bit small for being a pricey dinner entree.

Pros: decorations, locations (more than 2)

Cons: too dark, portions

I love Top Spice and I go there often for lunch. It is a great place to bring people because it has been very consistant, in my experience. I love the Tom Ka soup! In addition, the staff is attentive and professional. Calm lunchtime oasis.

Two star because of the passed good experiances. It used to be good. I had at least three great dinners there. Today we went for lunch and received bad service, awful food. Employees were having lunch at 12:30; my server ate before I did. No honey in the restaurant? My world changed today. Seriously, my favorite food at all times which I thought could not taste bad no matter how much you mess it up was bad today:Massaman curry tofu. It was f?.g baaaad. My wife?s food was uneatable. Service was a joke. May be it is lunch, maybe not, I do not know. All I know is I am very sorry to see them in such a bas shape.

Pros: ambiance

Cons: food, service

Ratings_icons Great Thai and Malaysian

The atmosphere inside is like taking a step into the Far East! They make great cocktails! The food is always up to par, served nice and hot! It is a little more expensive than other Thai restaurants in town, but you get what you pay for here!
The Curry dishes are delicious, as are most of the Thai Chef specials! It's a nice place to take friends that come in from out of town!

Pros: Very delicious Thai and Malaysian

Cons: a bit pricey

Top Spice is a place that puts an interesting twist on Thai and Malaysian cuisine. Everything that I've ever gotten has been good, but I have noted a lack of consistency when ordering the same dishes on seperate occasions. My favorites are the Masaman Curry and the catfish, as well as the very meaty Tom Ka Ghai soup. Don't be afraid to tell them to spice your meal up a bit ; without this some of their dishes can be a little too pedestrian and bland. You can definitely get better Thai food at a more traditional Thai restaurant (and doubtless better service), but Top Spice's menu variety is hard to beat. However, the servers basically ignore you unless you make an effort to flag them down. This can nearly ruin a dining experience when it takes the servers 30 minutes to take your drink order (has happened on multiple occasions). Also, don't go with a date or people that you want to talk to without yelling- the restaurant is always loud and hardly ambient.

Pros: Great variety of tastes and menu items

Cons: Always loud and crowded, unattentative wait staff

Ratings_icons Cute place but not the real thing

fredseb

The food here is far too expensive to be so pseudo-Thai. There was nothing particularly wrong with the place, but also nothing to commend it. Thai restaurants in Atlanta are sprouting like lemongrass, so try some of the others.

Pros: Nice decor

Cons: Expensive

Ratings_icons Food is good but service is not.

kmdpewter

When Top Spice first opened it was the thai place to go. Now the wait staff are apethetic towards the customer and act like they couldn't care if you came to eat at their resturant or not. So I won't.

Pros: Bad service.

Cons: Good food.

Veg friendly! This place has never let me down. They offer a variety of dishes with an accompaning variety of flavors to please any palate. Service has always been great, even when walking in the door with over a dozen people - without warning. Decor is tasteful, soothing, and allows your food and conversation take center stage.

Pros: Veg-friendly, Food, Service

I'm not an expert on "real" Thai food but this place serves good food. The atmosphere is very nice and I've never had bad service. If you get your left overs to-go they even add some extra rice in there for you. The prices are a tad highter than some Thai places but the food, service, and atmosphere make up for it. I consider it a great overall value. I have been a number of times and will continue to visit as it's my gf's favorite place to eat.

Pros: atmosphere, food, service

Ratings_icons Best Roti Canai

kohki730

Top Spice has a wide selection of appetizers, soups, entrees and vege entrees with desserts. They have the best roti canai (puffed bread) served with chicken/potato curry dipping sauce. It comes out hot (watch your fingers!), fresh, flaky and crispy. The sauce is absolutely wonderful. The food always comes out fresh and hot on dishes big enough to share between two or three people. My husband and I normally can't finish two entrees. I don't think we've had a dish here we didn't like. The curries, beef rendang (soft and not chewy), whole fish with spicy sauce, mango and tofu, any tofu and vegetable dishes are just great, even comforting. This is also a romantic place to dine, nice decor with dim lighting. Save room for dessert! Ice cream, rice pudding or sweet Malay pancake.

Pros: food, plenty of parking, ambience

This place was the best Thai I have had in this city. The service is prompt and the food was delicious. I left that day like a happy fat thai kid on x-mas.

Ratings_icons Good but Value is a ?

I like this place. Top Spice is located in a strip mall but it's what's on the inside that counts. The decor and ambiance of this place can immediately trick the mind to believe that you have warped to somewhere more urban and sophisticated. The food is good but a little overpriced for the portions given. Service is average but everyone is very friendly. I will come back...someday.

Pros: tasty, ambiance, Plenty of Parking

Cons: little overpriced, Strip mall location, service little slow

Ratings_icons Yummy, but not authentic

acsolomon

When you walk in, the atmosphere immediately puts you in a relaxed mood.
The service varies, generally better than average.
The food can be bland if you are looking for more spicy fare, I prefer the malaysian dishes.
Overall, a treat. Not too expensive. Also, look hard its kind of hidden in the shopping center.....

Ratings_icons BAD SERVICE!!!

smitherman

The food was good but the service was really bad!!! I'm really dissapointed...It was my daughters birthday...and we tried to make reservations on that night but after we came they didn't even saved a table for us...so whats the point of making reservation there!! We still needed to wait about an hour to get the table ready, after that I got really bad experience with the waitress. She's so rude...maybe she got a bad day!! I didn't know why but I absolutely never..ever come back again!! and my daughter.. she was really..really unhappy that time!!

Ratings_icons Not the real Thai

circetsui

Although the service is good and the price is right, I have to say this is not the real Thai food ( same as many other so called Thai resturants in Atlanta) . You can tell just by trying their Tom Yum Gung soup. The lemon grass favor is so little and there is not straw mushroom. Their main dishes are OK, too sweet for the taste of Thai though. I will not go back there again unless requested by my friends.

Pros: Good Service

Cons: Not real Thai food

Ratings_icons The Spice is The BEST!

esiegel76

This is the best kept secret on the Thai/Malaysian food scene in Atlanta. We first found this place, tucked away in the Toco Hills shopping center, in a random search for a quick bite and were completely taken away! We've been back at least 6 times now! The atmosphere is excellent, the staff are friendly, the service is excellent and the food is nothing but incredible! I try someting new every time and have yet to be disappointed! A key point for me is that they don't kill you with huge portions. The portions are perfectly sized to leave you full but not bloated and overstuffed (a rarity these days)! And here's the kicker: The prices are VERY reasonable. About $40 will get you a very nice dinner for 2. A must try if you crave Thai/Malaysian!

Pros: Friendly Staff, Quick Lunch Service
