The absolute worst shrimp and grits I've ever had. The grits were covered in a tomato based sauce which was overpowering and made the grits runny. The shrimp tasted similar to Walmart's frozen and the andouille sausage tasted like dich

The food at Murphy's was good, but the service we got was horrible!!!! From start to end. My husband order an irish coffee, and it took our server almost an hour to bring to our table, YES, AN HOUR, we're not kidding!!!!! I even have to

Situated on the corner of Virginia and N. Highland Ave, Murphy's is one of those VaHi rites of passage. Everyone from the neighborhood, including tons of folks from beyond the district, valet park or walk to find a staggering wait time for a brunch that is usually worth it. While you wait, check out the small wine boutique adjacent to the bar and pick up a bottle for later. Focusing on a southern-tinged menu, Murphy's excels with the mimosa-in-one-hand, baby-in the-other set. Shrimp and grits served on a bed of cajun gumbo keeps me coming back along with the addictive biscuits. However, Murphy's isn't all brunch business, the dinner menu proves to be as drool-worthy with items like spinach and sausage meatloaf and the Ashley Farms chicken breast.

Pros: Once you get a table, its all good

Cons: It is perpetually packed on the weekends

I ate at Murphy's with a friend the other night and really enjoyed the experience. We had the flat bread appetizer (not on the menu) which had tomatoes, cheese, and arugula. It was pretty tasty and not too filling which was good. For my meal I had the BBQ Salmon. I love salmon and this was not a disappointment. It was a generous portion and prepared well. My friend had the Hanger Steak which he said was really good. The only downside (which was not a big deal) was that it took a little longer than I expected for my meal to come out. Maybe 15 or 20 minutes after the appetizer. It was ok because I had good company and the server brought us some extra bread to nipple on. Overall it was a good experience and the food was very reasonably priced. I'll definitely be back more often.

Always packed on weekends, Murphy's has its location to thank, but little else. The food and the menu are always drab...you've been to these places before---nice locale, good crowd, lazy kitchen, long wait. Meh.

For some reason we always end up eating at the bar because we just can take the wait on a Sunday. If it wasn't just the two of us though, the wait would be worth it. The selection is varied, so if you feel like lunch and your partner feels like breakfast you have plenty of options. They make a tasty bloody mary!

Visited here with a friend for a nice dinner. It was fantastic. The staff was friendly and the food was superb. Great selection of seafood and other meats. And the wine list is incredible. Oh and the desserts are out of this world.

I can't believe Murphy's has been around for over 25 years, amazing. That's a huge compliment, especially in the fickled restaurant business, ...enough already! Brunch at Murphy's is to die for, my specialty... egg white omelet, the food is always freshly prepared. It's the perfect spot for a romantic date for 2 or a secret rendezvous! Save room for scrumptious desserts. The restaurant offers an extensive wine list and an ambiance you won't forget! I guarantee you won't be disappointed, there's also valet parking.

food wasn't spectacular & in VaHi there is a lot of competition - several @ our table had the halibut w/ mashed potoates; it tasted good but for $17 it was overpriced in my opinion -- desserts looked really good, i might make a trip back for dessert/coffee next time -- took out of town guests & they enjoyed the atmosphere & location, plus 10 min wait was awesome since i was expecting much longer

The grilled chicken sandwich and tollhouse pie are both amazing.

We arrived on time with an 8PM reservation on a Saturday night, but still had a 30 minute wait.

Service was good, but the waiter seemed a little harried and distracted.

A major problem I've seen with this restaurant is that the red wines are served at very cold temperatures. Not sure why they would feel the need to do this. It means that you have to wait several minutes before it warms up to a drinkable temperature. This is not fun when you've you've paid a large sum for a bottle. I mentioned this to the waiter and he said that others have complained also. Apparently, management isn't paying attention.

Food was good, but not spectacular. My portion seemed a little skimpy.

I noticed that Murphy's has been bought out by the slick local chain, Concentric Restaurants. It appears that they've lost some of the personal touch they had when they were still owned by Murphy.

I just recently attend a Wine Tasting at Murphy?s and it was so much fun. Not only did I learn about different wines but it was an affordable and entertaining night with my girlfriends. I will definitely be attending many more of their wine tastings!

First, we were sat at a table that is lodged in a corner next to a server station. We asked to be moved, and luckily, they had something else for us. The biscuit/muffin basket was excellent. They were all warm and really tasty. I was hoping our food would be the same way, but unfortunatly, it was not.
We both ordered eggs benedict (Eggs T Murphy on the menu). I thought mine was the only one cold so I wasn't going to complain, but then my fiancee asked me if mine was cold like his. For a dish with grilled ham, grilled muffins, cooked eggs, and hollandaise sauce (which should always be warm), you would think it would be lukewarm at the least, but this was cold. We told the server, and we got replacements. This time, not only was it cold AGAIN, but we had to take off all of these peppers and onions that were on the hashbrowns. (Funny, they weren't there on the first plate, and NOT listed on the menu). The server noticed us taking off the peppers and onions, AND could CLEARLY see that we only ate the ham off of our plate. We left about 90% of the food there, and he didn't say anything to us when removing the plate from the table.

Needless to say, I have always known this wasn't the best brunch in Atlanta, but we went because we were in the area. For it to win any awards of any kind is a bit ridiculous. They must be paying someone to vote for them.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a place nearby to celebrate some exciting news with his job, and Murphy's is conveniently in walking distance from my Virginia Highlands apartment, so we not only enjoyed a nice walk due to the perfect location, but the meal was delicious, the wine was good, and the desserts were amazing!

Murphy's brunch came with high expectations, and failed to meet them. The service was very friendly, but slow. The biscuit/muffin basket came so late that we barely buttered them before the food came out.

The food was ok, but nothing special. My chilaquiles were ok, but lacked any spice - it tasted like bland salsa dumped over some chicken. Also, it was cold. Like not even lukeward.

All in all, disappointing.

After living in Atlanta for the past 8 months, and having visited Murphy's on several occasions on trips to Atlanta before moving here, I've found Murphy's to be pleasant. But recently, the service is lacking. Examples are: having to wait several minutes after being seated for your server to initially acknowledge your existence, not listening when you ask for sparkling water, and instead start pouring tap water immediately, runners constantly bumping in your seat, and without apology, and being told "we just ran out" of the entree, dessert, or drink you want to order. If you're going to put popular items on the menu, you had better well not run out all the time, or at least not run out of more than one item. When tipping, I usually always over-tip, and take into consideration that it's not always the server's fault, but when servers don't utilize basic listening skills, and menu items are always "out", then cutting a tip below standard may be the only way to get the message back to management. Keep in mind: TIPS means To Insure Proper Service.

Our waiter was very unattentive. Murphy's dinner menu was very limited -- if you would like to have chicken but dislike the lemon ricotta filling in the Ashley Farms Chicken , then you are out of luck. Things that could go wrong in cooking took place in this restaurant -- the calamari and fries were undercook and not crispy at all; the mashed potatoes tasted a bit sour; and the Guinness Braised Beef Brisket was way too salty. The restaurant looks pretty on the outside, but the food could ruin your appetite and mood for the evening...

After reading the previous reviews on this site, I've come to realize that most of the negativities about the servers come from people who don't know exactly how a restaurant works.
When a glass of wine comes to your table and you disagree with the pour, it's not the server's fault. They do not pour your wine, the bar follows restaurant regulations on the pours. When your food comes out undercooked or over seasoned, it isnt your servers fault, its the kitchen's unfortunate mis-hap. When the host under-estimates the wait time, dont be angry to your server when you sit down, once again, it isnt their fault. Many unexperienced diners in Atlanta take out their frustrations on their servers when in nearly every case, it has nothing to do with the waiter. In fact, most of you think that it is actually acceptable to tip poorly, based on other reasons than your servers performance. Servers in Atlanta are paid 2.13 an hour and they never see a paycheck -- it goes all straight to taxes. Most servers owe over a grand in taxes at the end of the year.
Re-access your restaurant services and if something goes wrong, be sure to blame strictly the party involved.
Murphy's has a wonderful atmosphere -- great food -- and impeccable service. If something goes wrong on your first visit, come back.
Whether you are from the suburbs or downtown Atlanta, Murphy's is THE place in Atlanta to receive true southern hospitality.

Good Day All. I had two bad experiences at Murphy's. This is odd because the service and food I've had at 2 Urban Licks, One Midtown, and Trios were all great. Anyway, 1st experience was about 2 months ago. I was eating my Sunday Brunch eggs and bit down on what I thought was my tooth... turns out it was a piece of a plate that was chipped and made its way into my omelet. I showed the waitress who took the meal off my bill and said she was sorry, but going home with a bloody mouth isn?t fun. The second experience happened this past weekend. Again on Sunday, we showed up and Murphy's was very packed. We were told the wait would be 45 min to an hour. Ok...what else do I have to do but eat...so we decided to wait. Bad move! 1 and a half hours later I spoke to this lil blonde hostess who was in a real "s**ty" mood. She immediately gave me an attitude. Basically she wanted to get really snotty with me. Now here?s the deal, those that know me in the restaurant business and throughout Atlanta know I'm not a disrespectful man. I own and operate a business that teaches men the finer things from clothes to proper manors and how to be a gentleman. I have never been talked too like this young lady did. Based on the fact that we were there so long and one of the persons was a client I was too embarrassed to leave so we stayed and ate. We ended up being seated outside when their were seats available inside. (It was like 40-50 that day). Clearly she wanted to "get back at us". Needless to say, we wont be going to Murphy's again and it?s a shame because I can deal with a piece of plate in a egg...but rude service....no can do. But you make up your own mind if you visit; this was just my 2 sense worth of visits.

I went to Murphy's the other day and tried the tomato and eggplant soup and loved it. The eggplant and tomatoes are heartily chopped, so it's got substance and isn't runny. The croutons on the top added the perfect amount of light crunch. Follow it with the grilled veggie panini (chock full with roasted veggies and FRESH mozzarella) and you've got a great lunch, especially for a cold rainy day!

This is the PERFECT place for Brunch on a Sunday morning. They have amazing wheat pancakes. They have great mimosas. The wait is kind of long but well worth it. You also may have to walk a short distance from the parking area.

after hearing great things about this place, especially the brunch, i decided to try it with a friend. we went around 11:15am on a saturday and were seated immediately, despite what we expected. although we noticed that right after we sat down, a crowd formed in the waiting area. we sat out on the patio, which even in the winter was heated and cozy. the service was wondeful and we were offered a complimentary basket of delicious muffins and biscuits - wondeful with buttter and jam! the menu was extensive and it was difficult to decide. i ordered the eggs virginia highlands and my friend ordered the eggs san francisco - with sides of cheesy grits. the food was delicious and not too rich or heavy which tends to be the case with many places that serve southern style breakfast dishes. the cheesy grits were some of the best i have had in atlanta. parking is a bit of a challenge - but that is just the vahi area... i had to drive around a few times to find the perfect spot, but it was well worth it. i am adding this place to my brunch spot list which includes flying biscuit, rita's blue bird, and babettes, and will definitely go again some time!

I've been to Murphy's a couple of times, both on a "just in the neighborhood" whim. In my opinion, that's the extent of it -- it's a good neighborhood place. I don't think I'd go out of my way to eat here. The atmosphere is very nice; it's cozy, warm, and inviting -- exactly how a wine bar should be. The wine selection is impressive; I love that there is a little wine shop on the other side of the restaurant. The service here is spotty: the bartenders and wine sommeliers were great, but the hostess and servers were not. The food is good, but again, unimpressive. My date and I started off with the fried green tomatoes (which is not on the menu this season), which were pretty good, but I've definitely had better. My date ordered the filet mignon and I had the seared grouper. Both were fair, but just not creative at all. The desserts are said to be amazing here, and unfortunately, we were too full to try any. Maybe next time I'll come here strictly for wine, coffee, and desserts. Reservations are a must -- but make sure at least 75% of your party arrives on time or else you will never get seated!!! Parking is difficult; must park on the street or nearby public lots and walk.

Pros: Wine bar, good neighborhood place, desserts

Cons: Service, parking

I took my best friend from out of town to Murphy?s Wednesday night, and it is one of my new favorite restaurants. The staff was really friendly and the food was delicious. no matter what you order, be sure to leave room for the Bonzo cake and Tollhouse pie ? they?re out of this world!

I've been trying Murphy's on/off for last 10 yrs 'cause its a nice atmosphere, in my neighborhood and good wine and dessert selctions. However, I realized again today why I only go about once a year - the service is terrible. I waited for a lunch reservation for 1/2 hr (not too bad for a popular restaurant in atlanta, however it was 2pm), but food didn't arrive for an hour after we were seated. The hostess and wait staff are NOT friendly and seem as if they have never worked in the restaurant industry - I don't undertand where the attitude comes from. Food was good at one time at this place, but just very average fare today - so dissappointing.

Stopped into Murphys last weekend,
This place has really gone down hill. The location is great, the building is nice
but the service was so bad, it was very slow and the bar help almost ignored us for 15 minutes.
Even though there were only 6 or 7 people drinking on a friday night

It was like the help was so busy talking to each other that the customers
were an inconvienience to them.

We will not come back

Slowest service I ve seen in a long while.

I have never written a restaurant review, but after eating for the first time at Murphy's Tuesday night, I feel compelled.
We were a large party of six adults, but that was not daunting to our server, who seemed delighted to see us and genuinely interested in helping us. We enjoyed the friendly feel of the place, where we could relax and dine at leisure without feeling rushed to leave quickly.
It is dificult to find American food anymore that doesn't taste as if it came from a can and has been waiting under a heat lamp for us to arrive and eat it. Everything was obviously freshly prepared with care and thought to the fine presentation.
The appetizers we had were the skewered shrimp and the fried green tomatoes. I look forward to going back and sampling the rest. Each was a tasteful experience in itself, with flavorful sauces and dressings that were not overwhelming.
We each had something different from the menu and no-one was disappointed. It was all familiar American food with a little twist to the flavors that made it feel like a new cuisine of its own. The servings were ample, but a serious dieter will be delighted to find light food there that does not taste bland.
To say that everything was delicious is an understatement. From advertisements of fine restaurants in Mexico City I learned the perfect superlative description to use in this case - "esquisito!"
We are looking forward to our next visit. As one of our party advised me, order something you've never had here and you won't be disappointed. Thanks for a great evening!

I go to Murphy's almost every week for the food. I love the atmosphere, the food is excellent, price is good but the service can be very bad at times. There are a few times when the server forgot to serve the bread, I have to wait for a long time for water & coffee refills, at one point, my main entree came before my appetizer.
It is a shame when a restaurant with that kind of business is lacking the service. So if you want to go to Murphy's, you've got to be mindful about the hour because when they are busy, you're not going to get the best service.

After hearing about Murphy's brunch I decided to take a friend from out of town there. After a 50 minute wait (which I expected) we were sat. The waitress was too busy to give us any service and we got the feeling we were bothering her. I ordered the crabcake benedict and she got a frittata. We also ordered coffees and a bread basket while we were waiting for the entree. Nothing arrived. I finally was able to flag her down and ask about our starters and she banged the table with a roll up of silverware and said she would be right back. Toast basket was nothing like she described so she took it away but the lattes were fine. Our entrees and toast basket arrived at the same time and the frittata was just flat and my benedict was tasteless. Again 5 minutes to flag her down for ketchup for the hashbrowns and to remind her she forgot to bring a side of grits for my guest. Just not a noteworthy restaurant at all. It was worse than I HOP. I will not be taking anyone there again nor recommending it to anyone. If I want to take someone to brunch I will go to South City Kitchen or the Ritz Carlton where you get good food and reliable service. That place was sad.

Pros: Nice place, good wine list

Cons: A wait for horrible service and food

The open house environment is a very nice change from traditional porches or boxed in restaurants. I had the seared grouper for dinner - which was delicous and quite large. My gf had the spinach sausage meatloaf which was equally as good. They have a great selection of wines - although the bar can be tough to access while you are waiting for your table. Make a reservation to avoid the wait - and also use their free valet parking.

The food is excellent. My favorite dish is the rainbow trout with sweet potato hash, smoked bacon, baby shrimp, & lemon fondue. I have several friends who love this dish as well. The prices are also very reasonable, especially for the quality of the cuisine. Nevertheless, the service is not very good. While I do not want to bash the management or the servers, they were not very accomodating to say the least. However, the quality of the food trumphs the mediocre service so I will definitely be back.

Murphy's has been around forever, and I now know why. The food is updated comfort food with unique twists. I especially liked the Cracklin Pork Shank, a juicy, sweet pork shank with braised cabbage. The desserts are also out of this world. I hope this place will around for another 27 years.

Pros: Lunch, Dinner and Brunch--you can't go wrong!

Cons: Brunch gets incredibly crowded, so you have to arrive early

We have been going to Tom Murphy's establishment for many years, going back to the original location a block away, next to the firestation. It's always been one of the top places in the city for breakfast/brunch. A Corporate Restaurant Group has now purchased Murphy's, and we just hope this is not the beginning of the end. Still very good.

This is one of my all time favorites. Brunch is absolutely delicious!! You can pick any item in the menu and trust it to be delicious. There?s always a bit of a wait on Saturdays and Sundays for brunch as they don?t take reservations. However, it?s worth the wait.

I am absolutely in love with this restaurant. The brunch is magnificnt and the mimosas are heavenly! I frequent Murphy's often and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good Sunday brunch. The wait can sometimes be a little long but taking a walk around the Highlands makes it worth the wait.

We had a very unpleasant experience at Murphy's recently and thought it'd be helpful to share my impressions and hopefully save others the trip to the V. Highland restaurant. We recently moved into the neighborhood and wanted to try out Murphy's and thought Sunday at 6pm would be a nice time to visit. The hostess was very rude when she found out we did not have reservations and decided to seat us in a very small table in a corner, even though the main dining room was almost empty. I accepted the cold behavior and was hoping we?d have a better experience with our waitress and the food. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Not only was the waitress inexperienced but brought me a glass of wine that wasn?t even ? way full. I asked if that was the standard pour to which she became very defensive and it really set the tone for the rest of the dinner. My husband?s burger was undercooked and overall the experience was disappointing. There are so many other fabulous restaurants in Virginia Highland that I would encourage others to go elsewhere.

This Virginia Highland landmark does it right with great hospitality, service and value. Staff makes it a point to greet you hello and bid you farewell no matter how packed they may be. The quality of food and drinks are superb - as well as a great value (which is much to say in this day!). If ever they make a mistake, the managers are quick to respond and do more than expected to resolve the issue. No wonder folks have been coming for over 25 years! For those folks below who may have had a less than great experience, LET THE RESTAURANT KNOW! I'm sure they would want to correct it! Murphy's has always been consistent for us with knowledgeable servers and fantastic food.

Heard the hype, and joined friends for brunch. Forty-five minute wait surrounded by well-heeled parents and babies, as well as the other pretty people of the neighborhood. C'mon, who puts on eyeshadow and lip-liner for New Year's Day brunch? I could have stomached the pretentious atmosphere if the food had been outstanding. It was just okay. The real disappointment was my Bloody Mary. It was bland, with no celery, olives, peppers, etc., and no taste! Next time we' ll go to the Highland Tap or Carroll Street Cafe.

Stay away on Sunday nights, unless you want to be surrounded by babies and infant children. Besides, the evening fair is pretty passe and certainly nothing to write home about. If you're going to bother with brunch, which, isn't too bad, go on Saturday, Sunday isn't worth the chaos and two hour wait. Also, the tables are too close together, especially the two tops, and it completely loses any sort of atmosphere once it gets busy, and then its a madhouse. If you're in the mood for middle of the road food and feeling like you're eating in a closet, this is the place for you.

Murphy's is one of my favorite Atlanta restaurants. Sunday brunch is a must, although lines can sometimes make it out the door. I love the basket of blueberry muffins and biscuits. The menu has a variety of egg dishes and I usually get an egg white omlette, but there are also sandwich selections. The egg dishes come with a choice of hashbrowns or grits-- the hasbrowns are delicious. I also enjoy Murphy's for dinner. I usually get a salad but I HIGHLY recommend the Tollhouse Cookie Pie for dessert. It is the best thing ever. Seriously.
