I've never had Indian quite like this before. The Poori was so flavorful and light that I just wanted to gobble up the bread plane, but the spicy green and white coconut and various curries were too good to ignore.
The place was packed

In the past few years we have been to Sarvana Bhavan on numerous occasions and we liked it every single time. But had not been there in recent months so wanted to try out.
For appetizers we ordered Vada/Idli and main course - thali. No

Very horrible place. please don't go.

The staff does not what is on the menu and what would be ingredients.

When i asked the manager he told us that whatever we have that you eat if you want to otherwise the door is there leave.

This is definitely not India and Indian people.

They serve stale food and when we point it out,the management doesn't even have the courtesy to say sorry. They just say ok as if they served it knowing everything. We atleast expect eatable food for what we pay(the prices are high too).Taste is ok if you are lucky enough for not having a staled food on your plate. We ordered this for my kid and unknowingly we serverd her 2 spoons(what a regret alteast for us for serving her this nasty food). This is my first and worst experience and I dont prefer to take my kid here anymore. If you really like this place or wanted to try this place, you eat every order first before you give it to your kids who does'nt even know what stale mean.

I think reviewers 1 & 3 are whiners. I noticed Indians bringing in non-Indians as a show piece and the guys charge way too much. But I don't mind eating there occasionally. It is a decent looking place. Compare Sri Krishnal Villas at Global mall, you must be joking. When you walk and walk out of global mall you smell of curry mate.

The trouble is most Indians do not like other foods, specially the vegs. I don??t blame them. They think that Indian food is the best in the world. All I can tell them is be more adventurous and try others food also. You will like them eventually

Pros: Good Veg Food

Cons: Too Pricy for What you Get

This is one of those restaurants where I have a hard time deciding which is worse : the food or the service. And admirably, with each visit I've noticed that they manage to repeatedly surpass themselves in both categories.
One of my pet peeves with this restaurant is the refusal to split a check. The reason : they dont have the time. I get this excuse even when I go at 3.30 PM when there are in all about 5 occupied tables. And how do you actually find out that they dont split checks? When you go to the counter to pay there is blink-and-you'll-miss tiny note surreptitiously placed behind the counter informing you that they will accept a maximum of two cards.

The food is nothing to rave about either. More often than not, the sambar causes me discomfort which makes me believe that the chef must be like the artist who gloats over his masterpiece for days until he decides he's had enough of it and needs to make a new painting. Yes folks, in my opinion the sambar you had today wasnt made today, or yesterday, or the day before....
In my opinion, the Tamilian fare at Shri Krishna Vilas inside Global Mall is far superior.
I've decided to not visit this restaurant again. I refuse to provide business to a restaurant that wants to scrimp on a measly couple of dollars of surcharge on a credit card and doesn't have the spine to admit it.

we live closer to the North DeKalb area and Atlanta has many excellent Indian restaurants, but Madras is the best. How many things can you do with vegetables?? The preparations and spices, are out of this world. One of my favorite dishes is the Masala Dosai, a crepe filled with potatoes, spices, and other veggies but this time we tried alu jirra, paner tikka was awsum...it's really hard to find indian test in USA but now i think no worries...

We took our friend yesterday and drove 30 miles because this used to our best vegetarian place. First of all we are told that they do not have ice (water was warm) we were like that is fine...
We ordered our food and stuff. Kids ordered dessert and my daughter who likes vanilla ice-cream wanted that. I asked if we can get one scoop because they serve 3 scoops which is 5 bucks. That waiter was like sorry we can not do this it is against our rule... I was like darn it you have warm water for us which is compromised and you can not give me one scoop... my other child ate chocolate ice-cream and I have no intention to feed my daughter with 3 scoop of junk...anyways now I will never go there and will never tell my co workers at CDC and EMORY to go there... I wish we had old Punjabi owner who used to smile us when we come in.

I hate to write this, but I drove out of my way some distance to eat here as it was highly rated in Zagat's and elsewhere. Frankly, I have no idea if the food is any good or not as I left in disgust after being completely ignored for some time. It was obvious to me that the restaurant staff is concerned about serving Indian families only, as I observed as several Indian families being seated and their orders taken while I was still waiting and waiting. If you are Indian, I would expect that you would get great service, but if you are not Indian - head elsewhere. To top off my visit, I called to express my feelings. The response from the staff member who answered the phone? Just "OK". I will not be going back!

Me and my husband just love this place and make it a point to visit it every weekend. I am very surprised that people talk about poor service. We couldnt ask for anything more - you are greeted with a smiling face at the counter, seated almost instantly because it has a huge seating capacity (once we saw a group of ~50 people being accommodated with no hassles), the waiter takes the order on his hand-held device and within minutes you get your food piping hot! We have tried mostly the South Indian food and at probably not so busy hours (i.e. around 11:30 am or later in the afternoon around 3:00 pm). They even bring you extra chutney, sambhar etc. without blinking an eyelid. Prices are very reasonable too. People who are criticizing the food are probably ordering North Indian food which is not their core competence. We have tried quite a few other places in Atlanta and dont know what we would have done about South Indian food if it wasnt for Sarvana Bhavan! :-)
(I am not even remotely associated with the restaurant management!!)

There is no Indian restaurant that does not have a 4 / 4.5 star review. Pl be careful. We are an unethical breed of people and inflate our ratings. Least realising that all indian restaurants end up being 4.5 on 5. Pl use word of mouth and personal discretion to visit all of these restaurants.

I wish health and happiness in yr experimentation with food.

Great variety of North Indian and South Indian food all under one roof. The wait staff is polite and un-hurried. The prices are great too! Very wallet friendly ;-)

Their "Kaima idlys" are to die for. If you're on an empty stomach, go for their special thali. This restaurant is a "must visit" on the list of Things-to-do-in-ATL.

I just cannot understand how this restaurant continues to operate. For the last 3 times we have been there, the service has been lousy, food has been mediocre and the customer service absolutely pitiful. At our last visit, we were seated late, despite the visible fact that there were empty tables. We didn't get our food in a reasonable time - which I would expect to be around 10-15 minutes. My daughter's order was delayed by over 30 minutes - well after all the other orders were served and got cold. We finally had to walk up to the manager to get the order expedited. We did not get the drinks we ordered and pretty soon we just gave up on it. To add insult to injury, they tacked on a service fee (read gratuity) for the lousy service!!! This was and will be our last visit to this lousy restaurant.

I only come to Atlanta a few times a year and up until this trip, I ALWAYS ate here at least once during my visit. I thought it was the best Indian food I'd ever had. Unfortunately when I came on my last visit a few months ago the management had changed and so had the menu and the food. It was certainly not a change for the better, in my opinion. The rice tasted like boil in the bag and the tea was weak. I am so disappointed to have lost my favorite Indian place to eat. I am now on a quest to find a new place to go.

Okay people- Look no more for the best indian vegetarian food.
First off- the old "madras saravana bhavan" has closed and has opened under new management.
This is the original saravana bhavan that is in 54 countries. Check out their website.
We are lucky to even access to this restaurant in Atlanta.

The food taste just like the Sarvana Bhavan in Chennai-India. Very authentic and a solid dining experience.

I highly recommend the Rava Dosa, Palak Paneer and the Parota.

Enjoy!

I have to agree with the previous two reviewers. We ate here last week and the food was well below par. The 'masala' in the masala dosas was very bland. Nothing tasted like authentic South Indian food. This restaurant may have been good in the past but it certainly isn't now. We don't plan on going there again.

This used to be my absolute favorite Indian restaurant in the city, and I went almost weekly. They recently closed for months for a renovation and rebranding - I went once since it reopened and will never, never be back. It is not AT ALL the same restaurant it was. The menu is completely different, and the quality of both food and service is worlds away from what it once was. The food was just TERRIBLE. The samosas were soggy and served with ketchup. Seriously, ketchup. The spinach in the palak paneer was completely blended and looked and tasted like baby food, with barely any flavor whatsoever. The rice was mushy, plain white rice that did not even look or taste like they used basmati rice, much less flavor it in any way. The dosa was overdone and almost completely burnt. Neither of us could finish what we ordered because it was so bad. As for the service, throughout the entire dining experience I got the feeling that they wanted us in and out as fast as possible, like a fast food place would. We were asked (rudely) for our order 3 times within 5 minutes, before we had had a chance to read through the menu. Everything was served on metal trays and came out when it was ready, so that my husband's order arrived quite a bit before mine. They had metal pitchers of warm water on all the tables for people to serve themselves water, and we had to ask for a refill. They cleared and wiped clean the table as we were still sitting there, meaning our last moments at the restaurant we were smelling cleaning products and could not put our arms or anything on the table because it was wet.

It was a completely horrid dining experience - easily the worst Indian food I have ever had in my life. I was not expecting the new restaurant to be exactly the same as the old one, but I was expecting to still enjoy it. I will really, really miss the Madras that was. The old Madras was excellent and wonderful and I totally loved it - this new place is a complete disaster.

I couldn't agree more with the previous person. I've been twice since the new management took over, and while the decor inside might be a little improved, service and food have taken a downturn. On both occasions my dosa arrived a good 10 minutes BEFORE the other meal my friend arrived. By the time my friend's meal arrived, I had practically finished mine! I took my family on the second visit, and not only was the service embarrassingly bad, but the food was horrible and luke warm - the vegetable curries were simply TOO hot (the waiter simply refused to cook it less spicy), the sambar consistency was too thik and lumpy (not authentic), the chutneys were bland, and most importantly the dosas were soggy as opposed to be crisp.

Worst of all, when I complained to our waiter, she simply started making excuses to the effect of "this is the way it is". Waiting for the bill took forever, so I simply walked up to the front to pay up, and then again I expressed my dissatisfaction to the person there. Not only did she happily take my money, but made absolutely no effort to compensate me despite everything I told her - shocking!!

I will NOT be taking any more of my business here.

We went there Friday evening. Took forever to take our order. The water is warm, taste like tap water. I had Indian food before and had home cooked Indian food as well, but this wasn`t that tasty, so wouldn`t say authentic. Have to order rice, otherwise won`t give you any. The person taking the orders wears dirty jeans, and could care less..Took 20 minutes to get the bill, another 10 to pay. Food really avarage. The place, tables are clean and plenty of room between tables, so you can sit comfortable. Overall woudn`t go there again.

The new owners of Saravana Bhavan (who own the original chain in India) have taken over this place. They have upgraded the decor. Both the south indian and north indian food is awesome. You will not find more authentic Indian food anywhere else in Atlanta. The food is not Americanized (read bland and tasteless) and has the right spice levels. The service is pretty good. Much better than it was before. The food is served very quickly. The only complaint is that the mexican servers are inexperienced and clueless about Indian food. Another thing that they can fix is the combo meals. They do not have any good combinations.

Was at Decatur today, and happened to spot this "restaurant"
First of all - the impression I got was that he was running an "annadhanam". The person incharge of seating was acting as if we had come to get a free lunch.
There were a lot of blokes in red shirts running around doing nothing.
Lastly the buffet was not upto mark - very few items, not worth it.
Usually I dont waste my time writing reviews but today I thought of warning future goers about this lousy place.

Really BAD Customer Service. I am surprised that this place doesnot care for its customers!!!. I really had a very bad experience recently and its a shame that the management doesnot realise how it treats its customers. I and my colleagues had to leave the restaurant since the manager was not ready to let us sit on table other than what was assigned. No explanations were given and we were bluntly told that we have to move. We said that we will have to leave this place if we are suppose to move to which the manager didnot care. This really shows what they care and feel for their customers. I will not recommend anyone for this place.

I never saw such bad customer service in anywhere. I had very bad experiences in this restureant two times.
At one time, we clearly told the waiter / order taker, the sequence of delivering the order but they didn't care and delivered as they like. When I tried to complain to the management, they are least bothered to take the complaint.
Another time, I went to this restaurant with my collegues from other counties (non-Indians). After placing the order, we were asked to change the table we were sitting to accommodate some more customers. Does these resturant people think that they can ask the customers to move from one place to other afer placing the order ? Are they doing any free service ? We had left the restaurent immediately.
Its a shame to me among other nationals that such bad things happen in Indian restaurant.
If you want to taste such bad experinece, you may go to that place.

We went to this restaurant three times thinking that this will be a home place after we had a long day. From the beginning, we experienced the worst customer service. Worst receptionist who walks around like a zamby with a stone face not caring about anyone except for their credit cards. Then bringing the orders and the attitudes of the waiters were something you would only experience in worse than third class restaurants. You ask for something, you get something different. You expect the minimum as a customer but you will not be anything but disappointed by the staff.

Any American restaurant you go to, you experience world class service where customer is always right. However, having worked in one long time back, I know the realities of life. But this restaurant, my lord, have they ever been outside their shell to experience how well American restaurants treat you.

I would not call my self spoiled by the American Customer Service because I have lived in many parts of the world and I know what you can expect minimum from the place you want to spend your time, money, and have an experience that you would most likely want to remember, at least not as worst service.

Is it so unreasonable to ask to be moved to a table where you are more comfortable because of your size or because of the location.? Actually, we were kicked out of the restaurant because we moved ot another table.

I have been to Chilli's, Olive Garden, and other restaurants, you ask for it and you will get it. You tell them the food is not good, they will bring you another one and refund your money too.

I would recommend to the management at Madras Sarvana Bhawan to take some customer service classes and if not, close the restaurant and go home.

I absolutely love this restaurant! The waitors are friendly and will remember you the next visit. The service is not always the fastest, but I would still say it is good. The only problem with timing that I have experienced has been in an overly busy setting, so that is excusable. The food is absolutely great. I love all the appetizers, the soups are amazing, and the dosas are just awesome! I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone.

Service is APPALLING !

I don't normally air my opinion but in this case I am compelled to do so. I have eaten here approximately half a dozen times and have to admit that their food is reasonable. But this time it was average at best, if not worse.
However, the service was 3rd class! I went with a group of friends. We placed our order but we didn't receive any utensils even after the food started to arrive infact some of us didn't receive our food until others were almost finished. The waiter also thought it was best to argue with us when we told him that he had made a mistake with our order. It may have helped had he not stood a table length from us when he initially took it. If your going for the first time you may need to take some sort of signalling device like that used to guide airplanes to the terminal gate so you can get the attention of a waiter. Don't even think to ask someone other than your waiter because apparently the waiters don't speak to each other. Oh F.Y.I. take cash becasue their card reader breaks often and it takes them 15 minutes to figure that out.
Let me ask a question, why would a restauraunt impose a mandatory 15% tip? Because otherwise they WOULDN'T get any tips with this type of service.
Won't be going back for a long time, there's a better South Indian restauraunt just a mile down the road calle Udipi ( may not be the correct spelling).

I wish we lived closer to the North DeKalb area. Atlanta has many excellent Indian restaurants, but Madras is the best. We love Chicken Tika, but here, we don't miss meat at all. How many things can you do with vegetables? The preparations and spices, are out of this world. One of our favorite dishes is the Masala Dosai, a crepe filled with potatoes, spices, and other veggies. Order a side of lime pickle, to go with the veggies, for bite. Do not be put off by the service, just be patient.

We have gone to this restaurant several times during the past 3 years. Each time we find NO change in the menu. The waiters are impersonal. The place looks dated. The food also has been inconsistent. The last two times we went, we found the chutni to be toooo salty and the Sambar served with most of the South Indian dishes tasted nothing like the original. On two occasions the waiter seem to be from Hell. He forgot to bring half of our order. We shared whatever was served and as we were about to leave, he hurridly brought COLD food that was probably prepared when ordered, but not delivered to the table.
If you like CHEAP and want to just fill up not minding the poor service or the taste, go ahead and eat there. Hope someone comes up with some REAL South Indian food soon.

I have been there three times and by far it has the worst service I have ever seen in my life. The food is very average, any other south Indian place is just as good.
About three years ago, I would rate it very highly, but over the years the food and the service have taken a big nose dive...DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY HERE....any other place food would be better and I have no doubt that the service would be much much better too...

The food (especially South Indian dosas & stuff) is above average. More and more Atlanta area restaurants are starting to offer decent south Indian fare. This makes Madras Saravana Bhavan less competitive. The Service is horrible. There seems to be lots of guys roaming around in red shirts but they dont stop to make sure the guests are doing ok. If you need second round of water or drinks, good luck. The bigger problem is when we give feedback about the poor service to the owner and he brushes it off. To be fair, the food is not bad. The Bhel Puri is Atlanta's best. Dont go when you are impatient or in a hurry.

I am from Madras and when I went to this restaurant without noticing the word 'Madras' and thought it was authentic Saravana Bhavan. I was shocked when I noticed that it is not related either to the great city or the best South Indian restaurant chain. People there dont speak Tamil - the languages of Saravana Bhavan ( In fact they are all north Indians and dont even know anything south Indian ) and the food is definitely not South Indian at all. People beware of this and dont expect anything South Indian in this restaurants. This is a clever exploitation of the famous restaurant chain and the city.
The food is definitely horrible when compared with typical South Indian food. If you want to try real South Indian food, try some Udupi chains or the original Saravana Bhavan in Sunnyvale, CA or Edison, NJ or Newyork. These three are the only authentic Saravana Bhavans in US.

Don't even think abt it. I had a bitter experience earlier. Still I tried and went again since my wife loves south indian food. However, this was my last time. Sloppy service. Keep waiting. Staff don't even care to check if you need anything and you have to go to counter to ask for something. Are they still running a restaurant ???????
When you compain at counter to the manager, they don't even care to apologize or make any effort to list down the compaint.

Forget this place

I recently went to Madras Saravana Bhavan and had a great experience. My friend and I were seated immediately and received our food within five minutes of ordering! The servings were huge and the prices very reasonable. The atmosphere was simple and clean and the servers were friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

Killer indian buffet that is almost completely vegetarian. My girlfriend and I love this place because we can both eat since there are a few dishes containing meat. And if you're picky about north and south you'll be happy because the dishes represent Indian food equally. I suggest trying the coconut chutney which is the best I've ever had. But be aware that the service is lacking, albeit quick. The prices can't be beat and the food makes it worth having a server that is less than attentive.

Buffet is extremely disappointing. Selection is poor, food is 'run of the mill'. Dishes are not refilled. Puran poli - was hard and chewy like a biting on a plastic. Plates and cutlery were not clean (you could see the grease)

Restroom has only ONE sink. Not suitable for families with babies - no changing facility.

Not recommended.

If you venture throughout Atlanta to find ethnic foods that taste great, you'll find two types. The first is the four-star restaraunt with red carpet service, well-articulated waiters, and decor that would make Paris Hilton marvel.

The other type of establishment is a Madras Sarvana Bhavan. With tasty, authentic food, MSB is most always packed for dinner, and with good reason. A purely vegetarian restaraunt located a few miles from downtown Decatur, MSB is one of those spots locals prefer and few outside of Atlanta know of.

The ambience is cafeteria-like, although it is a full sit-down-service venue. The service is what prevents MSB from climbing in stars; the waiters are absent for 90% of the meal, so if you eat a chili pepper, expect to wait 10 to 15 minutes to flag one of your servers while your tongue sizzles and slowly dies.

Other than the lacking service, MSB also has a delectable paan bar (ask about that after-dinner special while you're there). Few of Atlanta's South Asian restaraunts have yet to break the service barrier, and MSB is no exception.

PROS: Pure South-Indian vegetarian cuisine with few rivals in the city
CONS: Service is as non-existent as hamburgers and steak

The food is excellent. Specially the South Indian food served here will leave you wanting for more. North Indian food is not all that good. Kulfi is awesome, so if Mango Ice Cream.

The service used to be good, but now is getting worse day by day. They'll bring food for half the people on your table and will forget about the rest. If you ask for a refill or spoon or fork, it will take forver before you actually see it.

PROS: Food, Kulfi, Ice Cream, Paan

Love the food. You can't find better south indian food anywhere. They are also very accomadating in fixing the food a certain way if you ask. They are willing to least try to make to order. The service is left to be desired. Sometimes it is a crap shoot to ge the right waiter when you need something. Some are really good and some are very bad. Tables are always clean and bus staff are excellent and willing to help outside thier own job description. I love to eat here and make it to Madras at least once a month despite the drive from cobb county.

This place has great south indian fare. Everything was delicious. I have to go against the CS review and say that Vadai are lovely and recommended. They are little savory fried doughnuts with coconut chutney and sambar. I would never pass these up at a South Indian place. It reminds me of breakfast in India. And they make the best authentic chai I have had.

If you are looking for heavy meaty north indian food, this is not for you.

This is by far the gem of Atlanta..I am from California, and we don't have anything like this there...this food ranges from North India to the South, and all is delicious. When my parents come to visit, we go here around 2-3 times in a 4 day span since they can't get enough of the food as well.. it's a bargain, good food, good ambience, and good flavors... nothing but high marks.. when I move from Atlanta, this will be the place that I miss the most! Consider our city lucky to have it!
