My son??s Mazda 3 check engine light came on while he was in Texas over the summer. A local shop there read a vacuum fault code and determined the vacuum detection pump was not working. While they had the car they applied missing updates to the ECU (computer) at no additional charge.

Back in Athens, we picked Japanese Motor Works off the web thinking that having a local mechanic would be a good idea. We provided the codes/diagnosis from Texas and asked if they could confirm and fix the problem. JMW reported a vacuum fault code, a 2nd code that the car had overheated and noted a visible transmission leak and air filter that ??needed attention?. They concluded the vacuum code required the ECU to be programmed (already done in Texas), but we were told they don??t have the equipment to do this. They would of course be happy to R&R the thermostat. We brought the car back to our regular guy in Atlanta, also an independent shop, provided the same information and asked them to resolve the check engine light and see what else need to be done. They confirmed the vacuum pump was bad and replaced it, problem solved. No temperature code reported, no air filter needed, no transmission leak noted. Based on a quick web search, it appears the temp code reported by JMW actually indicates failure to reach operating temperature, not overheating. When I asked JMW why we were charged a diagnostic fee when they could not fix the problem I was told we were ??paying for information?. Hmmmm?..

Best experience I have ever had, no doubt about it. They were friendly, helpful, and best of all they explain anything you don't understand. They were clear about the price, and responded to each and every concern that I had. I had a whole laundry list of things to be done, but they had fixed every problem within 3 days - by far the best turn around I've ever had. When I got my car back, it was like a brand new car! These guys are great!

About a year ago I got tired of being ripped off by the local dealerships, so I followed a friend's advice and started taking our cars here. A few repairs and some routine maintenance later, I couldn't be more impressed. Every experience I've had with them has been above and beyond. Several months ago on a rainy Sunday evening the timing belt on our Toyota Camry broke, so I had it towed here. The tow truck had just pulled away when the owner and his wife stopped by. They opened up the shop for us, checked the car in, and took the key (saving me from having to leave work the next day and drive back over.) Their prices are very fair, the mechanics do an excellent job, and the turnaround time is always sooner than I expect. Even their invoices are unusually clear and informative.??

Lots of people recommended this shop to me, so I took my 1992 Honda Civic there last fall when it broke down. The mechanic called me promptly and explained everything that was wrong and said everything could be repaired for $450.

The service was quick, but when I went in to pick it up, I was charged almost $900 by the man I talked to on the phone. His response was, "Well, I don't know how that happened."

The service was quality and my car runs well now, but be cautious when they tell you the quote.

Business Response:

fixing the goofs Lilli,I reviewed the invoice, and while the charges are consistent with industry standards, I'm always concerned about miscommunication on any and all levels. If you like, go to my web site and fill out the survey. This will accomplish two things: it will get you a coupon for a discount and it will allow me to focus on this problem so that I can fix it. Like you, I am not happy with the ol' "5 o'clock surprise!" I do like the fact that the car is running properly and would like the chance to gain all of your trust- not just some of it....Peter

I recently brought my Toyota Camry to Japanese Motor Works for a major service. They were hightly recommend to me. They are also members of the Better Business Bureau. As a first time customer I was impressed with the time they took with me in explaining what needed to be done and how much it would cost. The shop owner personally talked to me and explained everything. My car runs great. I highly recommend these guys to anyone who has a japanese car.

We have taken our Mazda to Japanese motor works s couple of times for repairs. Each time, we were able to get our car in and out in a timely manner. The repairs seemed to have been done well (the problems seemed fixed). All of the people that we have dealt with have been helpful and friendly. We will continue to go there for repairs to our vehicle.
