This restaurant is one of the most famous Athens has to offer as vegetarian/vegan eaters flock from all over the globe to sample awesome meat-free concoctions. Tofu dishes such as the Golden Bowl put the Grit on the map, while Dal soup, falafel, and tabouleh keep it there. A diner atmosphere sets the energetic tone that makes the Grit a place to frequent again and again for awesome (and healthy) delights. Don't forget to stop by the dessert case on the way in for an optical reminder to eat your veggies so you can get dessert.

Pros: A premier vegetarian menu, atmosphere

Cons: Tough parking

I really like the food at the Grit. However the service has never been good. Be planned to wait a long time to get your food. Once you get the food it is very tasty. However, I wouldn't say it is worth the wait.

The Grit is superlative in so many ways! My favorites are the staples: Cup of Dal (curried split-pea) soup, Tofu Cube Bowl with cheese, and their Lemon Tahini dressing is perfection. And breakfast at The Grit? Treat yourself - it's absolutely delightful!

Pros: Always so good! This omnivore would eat there every day!

Cons: Okay, the parking can be tough, but worth the effort.

My mother and I visited The Grit in the spring of 2007. It was recommended to us by several people since my mother and I are both vegetarians. Both of us were sorely disappointed by our experience.

We arrived at the Grit in time for lunch. It was not crowded. Our waitress took her time getting us drinks and taking our orders. When our orders arrived, we were surprised at the small portions for the prices we paid. The food was also bland and my samosa was overcooked. I love samosas and was shocked when mine arrive in a tough puffed pastry shell with so few vegetables inside that I could not taste them. It looked like a cheap somosa from the frozen food section at a grocery store. It was also clearly doused in oil. The soup that came with my meal was nothing to speak of. It was so boring I don't even remember what kind it was (lentil?). I don't remember the other side dish; maybe some shredded cabbage.

The overwhelming impression from my visit was disappointment. That said, I will go back one more time. Maybe this was a fluke. However, my roommate--another vegetarian--also dislikes the Grit and she has been several times.

The grit offers a wide variety of quality vegetarian dishes and some of the best desserts in town, all for reasonable prices. The atmosphere is unique, with interesting lighting and a diverse crowd of customers. The Grit is a good place to grab lunch or to go for dinner, but expect to wait for seating on weekend nights.

Absolutely the best place in town for vegetarian fare. I have never had an item there that i didn't enjoy. All my pals that are not vegetarians love it too. The breakfast is fantastic as well.

This is my favorite restaurant in town, and it is also a great place to take family and friends when they come to visit. I love the casual atmosphere and the great food. I always eat too much, but try and leave room for their amazing desserts (if not.. get one to go, they are worth it!!)

Visiting my grandson here, I had a great vegetarian experience. Not being a vegetarian myself, I was still impressed with the many fantasic offerings! I loved the golden bowl with the gravy. Who would have thought meat could be so easily missed?

This is a great local place and with reason. They're recipes are out of this world and don't make you feel like you're eating vegitarian. You can eat dinner for under $10 but make sure to leave room for dessert. Last time I was there I had an organic apple pie that was out of the world. Food that is good for you that tastes good too.

Wonderfully tasty food. Nice college-town restaraunt atmosphere. Excellent service, very helpful with menu options, and even with directions out of town. Sweet Potato soup and Teriaki Tofu and Grilled Vegetables in a Pita were scrumptious!
