Used to be a cool, laid back somewhat trendy place to go for a Cobb salad or a burger on a weekday evening. Now they have servers wearing underwear, loud obnoxious middle aged men who think they are going to score the twenty something

The food is very good and so is the service. The only problem seems to be the extra money added to the credit tab after it was signed. If it happens once, it's a mistake. Since it has happened more than once, I think there is a problem.

Tavern is my favorite bar in Atlanta. The bartenders always make my friends and me feel welcome and address us by our names. They will gladly customize any drink for you as well, and they do try to ensure that ladies are offered seats. The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced. I find the crowd to be quite diverse, from young professionals to older businessmen to professional athletes, so there's always new and interesting people to meet. Unlike other bars in the area that are only good on weekends, this place is really fun during the week nights as well.

This company is owned by some elitist S.O.B that do not even know the names of their biggest patrons or even most of their employers. It is no wonder that they have several lawsuits concerning racism. If you are a minority please do not give your money to these devils.

Cons: Racism runs ramped from top to bottom in this company

Good food ,specially the steaks. The complaints about being racist are a croc. Theres a lawsuit against them by a black basketball player because the bartender asked him and his lawyer friend would give up their seats for some ladies. They would not so they were escorted out when a commotion was started. Guess what ,it does not matter if your black purple or white they will ask you to give up your seats at the bar like they did me and Im white and they made me move for some ladies that were black. So race has nothing to do with it . Its funny that he hapened to be with a lawyer. But he did say if he gets a judgement he will make it available to anyone that has the same problem. ME ME ME ME , they did the same thing to me. But maybe its what a man should do for ladies ,Is to offer them a seat.
But the food is great specially the steaks , the bartenders are cockey bunch of guys but they add to the bar scene,so its all good.THe music is something to see , good stuff.

ok...working in buckhead for years, Ive eaten at the Tavern multiple ,multiple times. I had to write, because Im floored by all these reviews about racism, and poor service.
I am a strong supporter of local restaurants and businesses and in a city like Atlanta where there are so many chains its a pleasure to eat at a place like theTavern that isnt just another franchise.
Ive had consistent good service, the food is better than expected, and the atmosphere is great for a happy hour or just hanging out.
If visiting Atlanta, or a local, I would highly recommend the Tavern, and disregard the lame "haters" speaking about racism or whatever. It just is bizarre as I have been MULTIPLE times and never experienced anything like what the people below are describing.
I encourage you to go check it out for yourself, and in the meantime have some good food and drinks.

Last Saturday my husband and I were pleasantly surprised when we dined on the patio for Saturday lunch... LIVE MUSIC! Very chill and very good... perfect Atlanta spring weather. I had a shrimp caesar salad (yum!) and he ordered a burger... all good stuff. We couldn't resist to order a beer... it's just what you do when you're being entertained!! I can't sip on water while listening to the tunes!! Can't wait to check it out today! **PS I just read the reviews... what's up with the haters?!?!? I don't believe you've actually eatten here... it's nothing as you've described!!!

Cons: Big wait for a prime patio seat....

The service here was mediocre as was the food. The faire is basically dressed up overpriced diner food and you should not have to struggle to get your waitress's attention.

Going to this resturant was like going back in time. The staff was very unfriendly. They really didn't care to have people of Color in their resturant. I couldn't believe this was happening in a prodomiently Black city like Atlanta. The city officials should see to this resturant being close down. It's very bad that this is still happening in this day and time. I will make sure I contact the city officials.

I've been to the Tavern many times, and have always received very good food and service. Great nachos and burgers. The dining room is a nice place for a meal, while the bar and patio are great for cocktails. The bartenders are fun, friendly and entertaining. Some have expressed disapproval of the cocktail waitresses' attire, but I have always found them to be friendly, attentive and professional. The bar does get crowded and boisterous, but I find that part of its appeal. There are plenty of half-empty establishments around if that's what you prefer. I like that the Tavern is not trendy, it is a tavern in the classic sense. Recommended.

I feel as though it is a huge responsibility on my part to let all minorities know that The Tavern is racist and unapologetic to how they treat minorities at their place of business. Please do not spend your money at this restaurant. Another strong indication of this point is that they are currently facing a lawsuit on discrimination. Seems as though they came across the wrong minority who has money and a very low tolerance for racist people. If justice prevails in this case, The Tavern will lose and will be sued for civil rights discrimination. Good luck to the plaintiffs! I personally think that all minorities and whites should take a stand and protest the entire business as a whole. It is everyone's responsibility to intervene when someone is discriminated against. It is everyone's ethical duty not to right any wrong and not to stay silent about it, because you are just as guilty as those who are racist.

I invited my cousin from Manhattan to lunch last Tuesday and he wanted to go to The Tavern. When we entered the restaurant it was 1:30pm, lunch rush was over. The hostess made eye contact with me but never greeted us or offered to assist. After a number of employees walked past with out even a hello, I commented to another hostess if we were invisible. The hostess that made initial eye contact became overly offensive fussing that she thought we were going to the bar. We finally were seated on the patio and the waitress I believe her name was Tiera was very friendly and professional. Later on, I went inside to use the men's room and suddenly, a manager demands, "what's the problem"? I am wondering, WTF? I thought a may I help you would have been more appropriate. I almost lost it considering that I spent $135.00 in that place but never again. That is the first time I ever experience racism from my own race. Shame on them.

The food is pretty good, but there are many other places that I'd rather go for the price. It's known for it's scene though especially at happy hour more than it's know for it's food.

The bartenders need to get over themselves. Ladies- all of the bartenders are either married or have girlfriends but they flirt and even give out their numbers for bigger tips.
The people in charge are super (white friendly) and do everthing they can to get all white patrons including putting up a banner that reads "Welcome country music fans". They are currently being sued for discrimination.

The food here is great. It is pricey, but I think you pay more for the atmosphere than the food. The patio is a great place to mix and mingle with young professionals - the girls are scantily clad, which I guess is great for the guys... kind of awkward for the girls. Great crowd normally. Both for lunch, happy hour, and dinner. Service is always fairly good, I love their filet salad (it is all I eat there).

In my opinion:

Imagine an Elite model agency with awesome drinks and a great atmosphere.... The Tavern at Phipps is the result. Famous for it's happy hour. The bartenders have honed their craft and could star in Cocktail and Kenny G type's performs nightly outside. The food is very good, mainly Louisiana/cajun inspired. Hours of Operation: Mon-Thu 11am-11pm Fri-Sat 11am-12am Sun 11am-10pm

Pros: The drop dead gorgeous servers

Cons: Have to drive to Buckhead - wish they had one in Alpharetta

Everytime I go to atlanta I make sure I always stop by here. Located in the Mall next to Saks the Tavern at Phipps is a real treat. Hosting a very large white collar after work crowd the ideal time to snag a table is between 3-5 if you can get one on the patio. About 5 or so the live music on the patio starts and the people start flowing in.

The bartenders definitely are entertaining as they have almost mastered many bar tricks such as throwing a full pint of beer across the bar over someones head and catching it to serve to a patron or pouring a martini into a glass while balancing it on their own head.

The women who work there are beautiful and so are a lot of the women who go there to have some drinks. Being in the ritzy area of Atlanta, well worth the trip to see nice cars, good looking people and enjoy a cocktail out on the patio people watching.

Pro: Our waitress Misty was knowledgeable and recommended the Thai salad which was very good.

Cons: I took an out of town friend to lunch. We were seated at the door going out to the patio. The door was broken and went clang, metal on metal, each time a server entered or exited. Clang, clang, clang. Then the wind blew tea from a tray all over my white linen pants and my guest's clothes. Welcome to Atlanta and Phipps. The manager came over, apologized and offered to pick up my dry cleaning, but that was the last we saw of him. As we prepared to leave, a waiter said he could move us to a better table, one without the wind and clanging door. Thanks, but we just finished. As we got our bill, I had expected an apology, the dry cleaning offer, something to make up for our disappointing luncheon. Nada. Of course, I could have caused a scene, complained loudly, asked for everything to be comped. I certainly had cause, but I didn't. Now, I won't go back for that apology and won't take any more guests!

The Tavern is the best place to grab a drink after work. I have been consistently impressed with everything the Tavern has to offer. The food is solid, bar has a great vibe, and the service rivals what you would expect in a high-end restaurant. Even though my friends and I have tried to visit other watering holes in Buckhead, we always end up back at the Tavern. It?s consistently superior. All of the food is great, but the steaks are like none other I have ever had. The bar is the best place to "see and be seen." Best bar atmosphere in Atlanta.

I've been a regular customer at The Tavern for the past ten years. Very good drinks, good food, and a great place to meet friends. It has always been their policy, for men to give up their seats at the bar, for the ladies. It is good Southern Hospitality at it's best, and creates a great atmosphere for the see and be seen crowd. All Atlantan's are always wecomed here. I have business associates from all races, religions, and backgrounds, and eveyone loves the Southern Hospitality shown towards women. It was an unforturnate incident when two men were asked to give up their seats, to a couple of women. The men took it as insult, since the women were not as the same race. It could have been the other way around, even if the skin color was reversed. When are we as American's not going to take everything that happens, as a matter based on the color of one's skin, rather than just common good manners?

Pros: Good Drinks, Food & Southern Hospitality!

Cons: People With Poor Manner's, And Feel Everything In Life Is Based On The Color Of One's Skin!

.

It is very sad that you could have a rule for men to give up their seats to women. You never know what type of day a person has had, or what they may be going through. It is disrespectful to have male customers to get comfortable and then be asked to give up their seats. I've never heard of this happening at any other restaurant/bar. I myself would see this as being totally racial if I were black. I will never visit your restaurant again, nor will I recommend your restaurant to anyone else.

I first visited the Tavern in 2003 when i lived just across the street at Phipps place and had just Moved to Atlanta from Miami, and wanted to learn the social hot spots for professionals. The unfamiliarity of my type can be see as different , i admit but should be welcoming ( being from south Floridian/Latin origin) and Atlanta being less culturaly diverse. On one frigid night in January with a cousin from Venezuela, we made a take out order (before the kitchen closed) and waited at the Bar ,the bartender absolutely ignored us and (never forget him tall muscular white male) and reluctantly brought our drinks and ask not of our To go order we had to get a waitress to go to kitchen for it. On another occasion i was out with two Black female friends and recived the same treatment only it was summer and bar was out doors. Nothing exceptional at the Tavern at phipps in Miami we have the Highly traffic Clevlander Bar on SOBE. turisty ? Yes. Drinks,Service with out Boston style Bigotry? Yes. Never will go her again will continue to pass on..........

Not sure what is going on with theTavern at Phipps, regarding seating of African Americans. Local talk show Host Lorraine Jacque White is talking about this issue this morning on Power Talk Radio - Am station. I called the corporate office @ 4048141031 this morning to verify the story, pending a callback.

According to the AJC they are being served papers for forcing black men to leave the bar to give up seats to white women. Seems they were not "Southern Gentlemen" according to the owner. I would not ever eat here again. This place is a bruise for Atlanta.

Pros: whites are welcome

Cons: blacks not allowed

Great food, wonderful atmosphere, tremendous history in Atlanta for having a fantastic bar atmoshpere and a really go getter place to meet and mingle. Unless you are African American in which case they will throw you out if you don't give up your seat mid-meal to white people.

The food at the tavern is consistently good. If you can fight the happy hour crowds and get a table, you are lucky. Saturday lunch is a good time to go.

The Tavern is a staple in the Atlanta social scene. This the best place to grab a drink after work or to grab drinks before a night on the town. It is a really good crowd and the food is pretty good. Lots of good looking guys and fun live music. If you are new to Atlanta Tavern is a must!!!

Pros: Good Singles Scene, Great Tavern Chips

This used to be "the place" to go after work. It WAS great to go with a huge group of people for marathon Happy Hours. What a shame! My friends and I won't be going at all anymore. I don't what management is thinking, but this place has turned into a cheesy Hootrz. The drinks and food are average at best now for the inflated cost. It used to be much better. The Tavern waitresses spend their time flirting and flipping their untied hair (yuck) instead of delivering the food and drinks on time. This establishment has successfully pushed away female patrons and has made this a purely male establishment for cheap kicks. If a guy is looking to meet women, he will need to go a few doors down where women will feel comfortable mingling and socializing in a respectable environment.

Pros: None left unfortunately

A dinner date brought me to the Tavern at Phipps 4 years ago and I have been a loyal customer every since. The amibiance is great, low lighting, band out side, etc.. You can actually carry on a private conversation while dining. The food is very delicious. I always order Fried Trout Ponchartrain Fried trout with lump crab meat and sliced almonds on top ) or the Gilled SIcilian Trout along with the Crawfish Garlic Mash potatoes that just simply melt in your mouth, and the Honey buttered Croissants will have you wanting not just one order as an appetizer but another order to go with your meal. The sevice is very good and the waiters/servers/hostesses/ are always very polite, friendly and helpful. You can come casual or professional as long as you have on a shirt with sleeves.

Pros: Excelent Food, Excellent Service, Ambience, parking, Good date restaurant

Cons: Because the restaurant is so great, it can be crowded at times resulting in a wait for a table

My husband and I seek out the Tavern for their 'chips' - which are really much more like nachos with upscale toppings. Our favorite are the Spinach Chips - tortilla chips covered with creamed spinach and melted cheese. They also have a great burger, onion rings, and steak sandwich. This is not the place to go if you are on a diet, but is an excellent choice before or after a movie (as long as you don't have the kids with you). They do a very large bar business, and allow smoking at night, which means you can't take children there after a certain time.

Really good crowd - although Friday nights are a bit crowded. Thursday nights you will always find a good mix of people
